Howard stopping to thank Cliff in that moment was one of my favorite lines of dialogue in the series. Howard was likely so furious at Jimmy and wanted to scream but the emotional intelligence to recognize that this was very difficult for Cliff (especially because of Cliff’s son) and show his genuine appreciation for Cliff’s concern. I don’t know I just really liked that moment. Most shows would cut when Cliff says Kim Wexler, but BCS (and BB) really put the time into truly finishing a scene

"Suspension of disbelief" I know... but if I was in Howard's position, I would do the following: Bend down and say to Cliff, "Pinch a clump of my hair and pull... I really do appreciate you looking out for my well being, but I'm telling you... you've been had. You're a good guy and I have no ill will towards you, but I promise you... there's fuckery afoot. Don't take me at my word. Test my hair for narcotics. When you get the results, I don't require an apology. I actually am glad you confronted me. But when you have the results, swing by the office and I'll tell you what's REALLY going on." Maybe it's just because I'm in the sports world... but it's driving me crazy that a drug test hasn't occurred to anyone.

I actually don’t think it was that good as it stands now. It can be redeemed however; they can show us how Lalo was able to figure out who this woman is, how he found this specific bar where she is, how he got to Germany. If a future episode doesn’t show us this, the criticism stays. It’s just a magic wand and poof he’s there.

Gus pitched “Spice Curls” in the meeting with Madrigal/Schuler last season. When he said it again to the customer, it triggered him into thinking Lalo might dig into Madrigal/Germany/Werner. Which is why Gus went to the lab, to plan his defense (It looks like he is planning on pulling the plug on the lights so he can get to his gun which is why he counts his strides from the plug to the excavator). He knows Lalo will go there now so he's going to use Lalo's new found knowledge against him to lure him into a trap which I'm guessing works and means Lalo's corpse was under the floor/inside the south wall all throughout Breaking Bad.

I really liked this episode. Even with season 5, the majority of the action was reserved for episodes 8-10. We got plenty of action in episodes 2-3 and now they are setting up the end game. I appreciate that BCS is sticking to it’s roots and not just forcing action into every episode bc it’s the final season and that’s what some fans expect of final seasons. I expect the stakes to be very high next week and then everything will come to a head in episode 7, with all of the fall out/Gene stuff to come in the 2nd half.
@bgbills10

It doesn’t have to be action-packed but this episode was filler. Jimmy is still so different from Saul and we don’t have a lot of episodes left. We don’t even have a Gene episode yet, and at this point it will be rushed. The boxing scene was cringe, and they had us watch Gus scrub bath tile! Riveting stuff! Like the video says this is a prequel so we know Gus will survive, so the suspense is not working on us. And they spent too much screen time on Gus’ paranoia. Also I’m about ready to get off the “Howard go round” as well. I still love the show but this episode was a snooze fest.

I appreciate you mentioning Jimmy’s reaction to the boxing match! That’s the main thing I’ve been thinking about since last night. It looked like Jimmy fully intended to walk away at first and then you see his face change. After Kim’s “it’s because you know what’s next line”, it made me think that Jimmy was having pity for Howard and was like yeah I should probably give him a chance to do this since he might be feeling guilty about whatever they plan to do to Howard next. I don’t know if this was intentional but it seemed to me that Jimmy was not giving a full effort during the boxing match - I wonder if that was Jimmy’s way of throwing Howard a bone. On the other hand, I think Howard would have still won either way lol.

I disagree with the two responses above. I think you're just being worked by Lalo if you think he really did sympathise with Werner's wife and would have felt bad about killing her - he just didn't want to bring any unnecessary heat upon himself. He kills people for a reason, but he doesn't care about them. This was made very clear when Saul explained who the family of his victim were in Fred's murder case, he was utterly apathetic towards his crying, grieving parents. He's a manipulative, charming, murderous psychopath. If he seems like he's sympathetic towards the person he's manipulating, that's because he's emotionally manipulative and convincing in his act. You both got it right in your second parts, but framed it as "plus" and "not to mention" when those were the actual reasons rather than supplementary.

@@Steelrat1994 Pretty obvious that Jimmy held his punches since he could have held his own much like Howard said. He feels guilty about what they're about to do to him so he figured he could at least spare him the beatup. There was also helluva lot more than "Kim and Jimmy planning on Howard knowing". Gus realizing Lalo's plan and overcoming his paranoia, Francesca's first step into becoming the greedy cold woman we see during Breaking Bad and setting up Howard's PI crossing paths with Mike's men are all pretty huge deals. You can't have action packed episodes like "Bagman" without paving the way for it in episodes like "JMM".

One thing I realized this episode was that Howard has always known Jimmy to be an overconfident small time con artist, so he’s expecting to outsmart that guy. But he’s walking into a trap set by Kim, who they’re setting up as a Gus-level manipulator. I’m starting to think they’re leaning into it so hard it’s a fakeout, but I just can’t decide. The most interesting thing to me this episode was when Jimmy says “fight for you, huh?” and Kim responded like “yeah, whatever”. I know that’s not quotes of what they said, but right after Kim was really into the fighting for you thing, it was like a complete afterthought to her
@broadcasttttable

I zeroed in on that too. For me its the strongest moment of the episode. Its like she was dismissing him, that she had already decided Jimmy doesn't fight for others, more for himself, and this just shows a widening chasm between them. I still go back to Jimmy backstabbing her in the settlement meeting, and, in her mind, the point-of-no-return for the emotional split between them. Before, they were partners, now he's just a tool in her plan.

We didn’t get to see the aftermath of the Wendy scam in last weeks episode, this week we see that Howard wants a pi to follow Jimmy, but we don’t see the pi following Jimmy in the same episode! Instead we get extended pointless scenes of Gus being scared. (Yeah we get it. He’s scared. They established thst in the previous episode. Let’s move on .) we get viola and Kim, and the boxing scene, all which could have been cut. The majority of the episode should have been pi following Jimmy/more of lalo in Germany trying to get info from Ziegler’s wife

I felt the same way as you did regarding not knowing what their plan was. Again with the Hitchcock, who described the difference between ‘Action’ and ‘Suspense’ by saying, ‘Imagine that you’re watching men playing a card game, then a man with a gun bursts through the door-that’s action. Now imagine that you’re watching this same group of men playing cards, and the camera cuts to a guy taking out a gun, then back to the game, then it cuts to him quietly moving up the stairs-that’s suspense.’ Wouldn’t it have been better to have seen Jimmy saying, ‘Now-think like a Judge”…and had a cut to Howard saying simply, “Judge So-and-so…” and WE could’ve seen that this Judge with a handlebar mustache had a broken arm. Hence, we the audience would’ve known more than the characters, men playing cards, but here Jimmy and Kim, and we would’ve been watching them toasting what they were about to do, and hearing Kim saying, ‘but you know what’s coming’, whilst proverbially biting our lips. In this case, it would’ve been so much more entertaining, amirite …??

Say what you want but I'm still finding it too slow and boring. Especially considering that it's the final season. The series is basically finished and Saul's involvement in cartel stuff, action and other things that everyone wants to see is considerably small and meaningless. The cartel side of the plot has always been too detached from Saul's plot and I find ridiculous that after five seasons they've only been able to connect Saul with Lalo thanks to the first episode with tuco. We all loved that but it was really unrealistic. I mean, a Mexican granny that drives around with a car like that? And then, after that, zero involvement until the fifth season and now zero again. It's not enough. At the end of the day you can count the episodes of saul involved in breaking bad stuff on one hand. And to make things worse, there will be another two fucking months of nothing until July when they'll resume with the last six episodes. Which sounds like a sick joke since they kept everybody waiting like idiots for two years. I'm a big fan of the series but this is really shit.

We know how he will end up so let the guy lose his shit just a little bit, ya know? Btw thanks for doing these recaps!

i thought this was an incredible episode, even as the heat died down less than 15 mins in. realizing that the woman at the bar was werner’s late wife, and slowly realizing that she seems to know there was more to her husband’s untimely death than the audience was led on to believe…excellent writing. for a show that seems to only have a few possible ultimate outcomes, the directions they’ve been going are mind-bending. excellent writing. can’t believe we’re gonna have to wait the whole summer for second half of this final season.

You always do a great recap, and you seem to catch a lot of the nuance of the episodes. I guess that is why i can't understand you having any negative thoughts about the episode. to me, it was another perfect episode with tons of reveals! The opening and ending were above perfection for a show like this. And I love the pace! A lot of complaints I hear are about too many commercial breaks, which I think can really mess with the pace. I would suggest everyone find a way to watch it without the commercials. I watch it with them, then without them, and it like a whole different show when watched without the breaks. AMC+ replays them without the commercials within a hour or so after the initial airing.

The address of the boxing gym was 1512. Flip those around and it is 1215..the year of the Magna Carta. Recall from Chicanery that Chuck was ranting about him knowing the number on the mesa verde papers was 1216, one year after Magna Carta. Kim and Jimmy are giving Howard his version of Chicanery….just not sure what that looks like yet

Was hoping someone could clarify something for me from a previous ep I just thought of: When Nacho opens the door at Lalo's compound, and the mercenaries enter - why didn't Gus give them the order to shoot him there and then? It was clearly not Gus' intention to allow Nacho to live - too many loose ends. I'm guessing because, Nacho being the cartel's prime suspect takes the impetus away from Gus? Not 100% clear on this
@rickybindahoose6193
@rickybindahoose6193 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah Gus wanted to set up Nacho from the start, they put him in that motel so that the twins would find him. The guy Nacho ambushed in the boarded up shack in the Motel carpark was keeping an eye on Nacho making sure he stayed in the motel room for Gus.
@carbon-1486
@carbon-1486 2 жыл бұрын
@@rickybindahoose6193 I got that, but if the cousins captured Nacho - they'd inevitably make him talk, and it was clear the cousins were not going to risk killing him before they could do so, and making his last days alive - agony. Surely it would have been the far, far safer and more logical option for Gus to either kill Nacho at the compound, or facilitate an extract so they could execute the plan that happened in the end, using his father as leverage to make him cooperate with his own staged death

@@carbon-1486 yeah it does seem a bit contrived considering you'd think Gus would know way better, the Cartel will do anything to anybody to get the information they need. But I do think it's implied Gus was short sighted in this setup, and I think Mike knew that too which is why he was reluctant on the plan, other than him not wanting to set up Nacho obv. I bet there's a BCS buff on reddit out there with a proper answer though 😎

If Nacho is to take the blame for the attempt on Lalo's life and the mercenaries coming in, then having Nacho killed by those same mercenaries casts a shadow on who else was behind it. They eventually blame "Alvarez," but why would whoever Nacho is working with turn on Nacho and kill him. If Nacho gets killed in the attempt, too, it points even more squarely at Gus.

@@carbon-1486 that's why Nacho was said to shoot anyone who crosses the doorstep. They could kill him in response.

At some point Saul has to learn about the plan with Nacho betraying Lalo. I don’t know if people realize this, but both Nacho and Lalo are mentioned in Breaking Bad Season 2 Episode 8 “Better Call Saul”. 30 minutes and 25 seconds in. When Walt and Jesse take Saul out to the desert and show him a grave he starts flipping out and says “It wasn’t me it was Ignacio. Siempre Soy Amigo” Jesse tells him to shut up and speak english and that’s when he says “Lalo didn’t send you, No Lalo?” It’s crazy to me that that episode that aired in 2009 set these characters up that we didn’t even see or know of until like a decade later.

Regarding the Cook Cave, Gus and the Gun : I believe you'll see Gus make the inaccessible concrete filled blast hole the entrance for Lalo. This sets him up to pace himself back to get the hidden gun on him. That's my theory. Nice job... Keep up the good work!

I don't get how Hector is in the wheelchair and Nacho dies in BCS, when they both very much alive and able in Breaking Bad. Also, Werner is dead in the prequel, but is in the picture in BB and then dies in Breaking Bad. Are these looks into the future? It seems like these scenes are part of the present plot in Better Call Saul.
