What is your favourite Bernstein solo? And of course who else should I make a video on? 🙂
@chrisnevers75655 жыл бұрын
Not really guitar related as much as music theory, but I'd like to learn how to get that 'spiritual jazz' sound like Alice Coltrane or John Coltrane around 'love supreme' or 'om'

theres this song by Morgen called Love, it isn't a jazz song but about halfway through the solo it randomly changes into a jazz solo and it sounds really cool and I would love if you made a video analyzing it

A friend of mine came across Bernstein years ago after a recommendation from Jim Hall, I was hooked from the first note I heard. His unique playing is inspiring to watch, I really like his thick sound too. This is a great insight to his approach. Cheers Jens.

Got to let you know Jens,! I'm self taught, when I was growing up, Born in 59, Grew up on 78,s as a kid, a lefty to boot, hope I never insult you, Just wanted to let you know I very much appreciate your stuff, thank you a great deal!

Was looking forward to this, thanks for your analysis. Yes I can see the traditional approach, also blues flavours, I think Peter Bernstein like Jim Hall is all about the melody with a modern twist and some great note choices. With a tone to die for.
@JensLarsen5 жыл бұрын
Glad you like it! I think that is true, though rhythm is also an important ingredient 🙂

I especially like his solo sessions @Smalls. The sound he produces is just great. A real Archtop of course :)

Great to see this video, & also more current, with him showing up. Great "trad" player, but so much more. His duo with J. Kreisberg, at a bar, on KZbin is wonderful. Both great soloists, but the comping for each other? .. .. is the best part. Thanks, Jens.

Very nice. The opportunity to use the the slower rate of harmonic change to make longer melodic phrases is one of the things that makes me tend to prefer modal jazz to most bebop.
@JensLarsen5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Actually he plays the same on changes so it's not in anyway exclusive to modal jazz 🙂

Super lesson, that would be fantastic if you'd make more "modal" ones. Most of your lesson are related to tonal context. Many thanks

@@JensLarsen Google Miles Okazaki he plays with Steve Coleman, has a few albums, a recent set of records doing solo guitar arrangements of Monk tunes. He wrote a book called Fundamentals of Guitar that is not fundamental fundamental, but interesting ways he views the guitar. He also teaches I believe and the University of Michigan. Quite a interesting guitarist.
