This is part of a series of approximately five-minute reviews and comments about mainly American films; these were all created in the late '80s by Louise Stratten and me for broadcast on television.
I consider this a kind of (I hope) public service to support and encourage film lovers; most of the pictures discussed are available in some form today. PB

To Be Or Not to Be certainly is one of the funniest movies ever and absolutely brilliant, it also contains some dramatic scenes (when the spy is shot in the theater) that are as good as any suspense scene in a Hitchcock movie. However Lubitsch´s best picture is not even mentioned here, Heaven Can Wait, and this one is - as far as I understood - even censored (the ending fades to black BEFORE Don Ameche says he wants to go back to Hell to have some fun and ...Heaven Can Wait...

Anything by Lupitsch is better than anything nowadays...he was a true genius who trusted his audience. His subtle and sophisticated masterpieces were targeted for the general audience of the time. Tarentino?? God help us.

I cannot thank you enough for sharing these, Mr. Bogdanovich. Through this resource you have helped a curious 19-year-old gain an immense appreciation for the films and actors of Old Hollywood, long forgotten or dismissed by my generation unfortunately. This has really been more valuable than any film class ever could have been, so thank you again! 😁

Thank you for sharing these. Mr Bogdanovich. To Be or not To Be is an excellent comedy and one of my favourites. I enjoyed the remake with Mel Brooks, and Anne Bancroft. But it's not in the same League as this. One Hour with you is another of my favourites from this master.

Is there a video of favorite screwball comedies. Whatever is on the list my son would add What’s Up Doc. Why do we have to watch this for the 5th time, says I. Because, it’s like a live action cartoon, says the kid.

I'm a big fan of Peter Bogdanovich's film commentary. However, when it comes to comedies, I don't find slapstick and comedies made before The Graduate (1967) funny. If they don't make me even smile, much less laugh, it doesn't matter how well regarded they are. The Graduate marked a generational change in humor in film. Maybe David Letterman had a similar function on TV. Irreverence. Irony. More subtlety. Less broadly drawn and traditional jokes. 1967 began a comedic departure from what had made previous generations laugh.
