The last scene you show above with Lombard bewailing the falseness and theatricality of their lives and how they cannot even tell real love from theater.... and she PERFORMS it without thinking. Delicious.

If anyone listens to the soundtrack from the 1978 play adaption of this movie, you would love this movie even more. That soundtrack is on KZbin ( "On The Twentieth Century") with John Cullum ( who won a Tony for his performance) and Madeline Kahn. I loved the musical so much I saw it 7 times and was at the last performance!

Saw it for the first time on TCM a couple of months ago. Great supporting cast as well as phenomenal performances by the leads. Wish review showed him sticking her with the pin to get her to scream made me laugh out loud and I am the dour sort.

Back in the '70s we had movie 'Revival Theaters' in Manhattan as well as daily Screeings at the Museum of Modern Art. My Husband and I - both young Music Students - loved this Film so much! And then loved the Musical ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY in '78. We saw it on Broadway and then wore out the Vinyl Recording. I recently bought a CD of that Original Cast Album. Can't seem to find a DVD of this Film though!

Wait is this actually Peter Bogdanovich channel? I ran across a channel of a really good supporting actor from the 80 s and 90s who would recite Poe and Elliot poems. Not many followers but he really did a good job. The main thing was it showed the humanity of an actor or celebrity. We see them on screen and they are not real. See them on KZbin and they become the person standing in line behind you.
