Peter Bogdanovich Recommends: James Cagney & Raoul Walsh

Walsh & Cagney only made 4 pictures together, which is a shame as they were a perfect fit, as simpatico as the artful associations of Ford/ Wayne or Scoresese/ De Niro . Bogdanovich's writings about his encountering of these past masters is a priceless resource...

" unreal, but true" so said Welles of the fizzing firecracker that was Cagney. Imagine Yorkville Jim in an Orson Welles picture, two combustible mavericks!

The Roaring Twenties was decades ahead of it's time. That's the film anticipated Scoresese.

Cagney's the most dynamic actor of his era could do it all sing dance actin drama and comedy superbly in real life was very well liked quite a homebody who painted played the piano but tough too won two legal fights against studio head jack Warner to say the line amount movie actors before brando and after Brando I say bunk I watch Cagney over brando like Cagney in that electric chair scene in Angels with dirty faces made film history Cagney went a couple of days without eating for the scene a New York City kid director scorcese was right the first method acting on film wasn't Brando but Cagney in the public enemy in 1931 in that film Cagney had many add libs gestures humor that makes the other actors in those scenes look stuff and dated to retire and live in the countryside for his last 25 years if his life simply was smart in my book
