I lived in Atlanta as they made their way to the top. I left there in late 82’ but have always considered REM to be one of those bands who really stayed who they were. I saw them many times at 688 and loved it.

the entertainment tonight intro gave me some serious flashbacks. Holy fuck things have changed since I was little in the 80s.

Cool, thanks for posting - But now I'll always wonder whether or not Conan should be considered a swashbuckler...

What word does he use at 2:24 when he says they put out a record that didn't ???? to the southern stereotype.

Great interview! It's funny to see how radio music still back then sounded like it was written by the same five guys (of course, at least now, a lot of it is). I wonder if REM would have gotten an ET spot if they'd come around in a similar fashion today.

No grudge against promoting but it’s a pretty big disconnect to see Buck & co. within the format of ET. Why? The (then) ultimately non-commercial interfacing with the ultimately commercial. And through the lense of the embarrassing eighties at that. Rough stuff.

Yeah Rem was on entertainment tonight in 1984 you can call them great but not indie by any stretch from that point on.

Interview itself is awesome... the rest of it reeks of the 80's XD

Buck boldly declares in this '84 interview that pop music is homogenized and all sounds the same. I wonder what he would say about REM's last few albums?

i am a huge R.E.M fan, but all of their records were absolutely eargasmic up to Around the sun, and particularity their last 2... which were just shit compared to what R.E.M had achieved prior
