Peter talking about the traditional comic book format being obsolete reminds me of the golden age of webcomics when cartoonists were trying to figure out new ways like interactive panels, llimited animation and the endless canvas method to present comics on a computer screen. None of it really stuck, and the traditional page and strip formats kept perpetuating itself despite the endless possibilities the digital format was supposed to present. There's been a development in the last decade where cartoonists use instagram's natural format of swiping to make comic strips, tho. That seems to be a really popular new way of making comics right now.

That’s an interesting point, do you know any other examples of experimental ways web comics tried to innovate like that. I love that stuff.

not Chung's work, but Disney's Tron: Uprising has a similar visual style (thanks to Robert Valley i believe). pretty cool series that unfortunately was cancelled after one season.

Peter says comics are obsolete in printed form? Completely disagree. The page layouts of printed books are not limitations, that format creates pacing and reveals that digital cant reproduce. I do like the idea of digital versions with pencils and what not. I may actually buy a digital book if that were the case.

That idea about digital comics including the B&W art is amazing. I’ve been reading the Maxx Maxximized re-releases from IDW and they include some B&W art in the back, and I’ve been thinking I wish I could just read the whole thing in B&W.

It makes me very happy that Peter Chung is still doing well, let's hope that he gets the courage back to do more animated projects because even with Mappa and Powerhouse Studios, although they do it well, they are not even half as good as this genius was.

Didn't know Peter did the intro for COPS I love that show and great animation plus character designs. Love it if you guys can shoot interview some ppl involved on that Show and even the comics, unless you have ? I like Peters idea regarding digital comics because you can do that and I find you can gain more interest into the comic medium. I loved it when I got issues and they had sketches of characters I still love physical and I prefer the limitations of a page. Restrictions can help make something great as opposed to if there are not any limitations, how far and messy can it get? Ultimately you may get lost with the point the image and story you are trying to convey

Incredible. Very strongly considering picking up that course. I always knew Aeon Flux of course and his subsequent work, but it's crazy that until he started posting things on instagram I didn't realize how many other incredible things he made that had such an impact on my youth [many you touch on!]. The TMNT intro, the Rugrats intro, and even the Sesame Street PSA about water conservation with the fish about to suffocate which is seared into my brain. Thank you so much for this conversation and great work! As an animator, this discussion is invaluable!

I respect his takes on the medium of comics and kinda agree with both ends of the argument (I was actually waiting for him to get around to this topic again from the last time lol) that there's limitations but then again there's limitations to any storytelling medium. But comics is capable of doing things that novels or movies can't, it isn't necessarily "the worst of both worlds" as he said but I'll paraphrase a quote from Alan Moore's masterclass: "Unlike a movie, comics allow you to absorb images and words at your own pace, using visuals as a separate storytelling track. This creates striking juxtapositions and counterpoints, making comics a versatile medium capable of conveying vast amounts of information." The way I see it, comics is a meditative medium where you can spend a nearly infinite amount of time with the creator. No worries about things such as running time, seeing through only one camera at a time or having to restrict yourself to only one perspective or monologue at once. There's a lot that's yet to be done within the constraints of comics. But I do agree with him that a lot of aspects of it can take away from the flow of the storytelling experience but that's more of a problem that's specific to just plain bad comics.

Another great interview. I only disagree with Peter on printed comics being obsolete. I spend so much time on a computer that I can't wait to not be on it, either for pencil drawing, or to read a book or comic book. Holding a unique physical object in one's hand is a completely different experience than digital screens. Also, one reason for comics is that it is a visual storytelling medium that does not cost the large amount of money that making a film costs, and can be done by one person.

Peter Chung es un genio pero podemos estar de acuerdo en que no tiene razón, los cómics y las artes conceptuales impresas tienen mucho más valor de lectura, incluso de colección.

very interesting and smart artist you get my likes !! i agree with him about economy of lines in a page when telling a story... the less the better, all the detailed crosshatching can be distracting and it has to be as easy to read as reading a peanuts cartoon also im not a fan of a lot of text in one page

Usually never comment on these videos, but I found his idea of printed comics being obsolete kind of interesting to hear. Maybe format wise they maybe...you could argue that. the other factor that a lot of people don't consider in this argument of print versus digital is that printed materials are still much easier to get and interact with than digital media. Not everyone can afford a smart phone or tablet. Not to mention having access to the internet to acquire the ability to access the comic books. Not everyone can afford internet and even high speed internet. Then again you have the idea that some people in the world do not have electricity...this maybe stretching my statement a bit here...but I know that is true. Printed materials like books and comic books have the ability to reach more parts of the world than digital media....it just does. Somebody living in a rural or remote part of the world can still enjoy a printed comic book without the barriers of a acquiring a digital device and access to the internet. I actually think you expand your audience with print more than digital. There is also the legacy factor of the human species in print. If the electrical grid goes dark for some reason...we still have access to the information via print. These are just my thoughts on this topic.
