Brilliant. "Old Spice..the height of sophistication"... we guys of a certain age thought that at the time. He could always point out the ridiculous. Love his humour.

Is there anyone who comes anywhere near as close to this guy these days. Peter was probably one of the greatest ad libbers I've ever seen. A true comic trailblazer that people are still trying to copy to this day ! It's such a tragedy we lost him so early !

Thankfully a lot of early private owners of VHS machines have come forward with some sketched that were thought lost... Bob Monkhouses private collection (which is VAST) I think will have some of them too. So there is hope! But it's astonishing to think of the BBC erasing master copies of cutting edge, historically important footage like Peter Cook/ Dudley Moores work. Unthinkable today!

I think Peter Cook and Keith Moon have a lot in common. Both effortlessly talented at what they do, both driven to an early death through drink, and similar senses of humour. Just my thoughts anyway. Both eccentric Englishmen that add to the rich cultural tapestry of this little island off the coast of Europe.

I'm quite happy about this fact (being a chap) but it's remarkable how bad Peter Cook started looking not long after this, due to alcoholism. Real shame, because he was such a brilliant... genius really.

@williamwilson666 I think most of the pieces are available in 'Tragically, I Was An Only Twin.' If you do pick up a copy, make sure to intone it in a sort of nasally E.L. Wisty voice, otherwise it doesn't really get off the page.

I think Cook may have been slightly inebriated during this show. Both his eyes and his hesitant speech seem to indicate this.
@artemisvega89402 жыл бұрын
You can tell from his voice actually. He's got great control, but during the more conversational moments you can hear the telltale "looseness" in his enunciation, the tendency to condense words a tiny bit or overemphasise s sounds slightly, consonants become more slippery and less important.

@StinkyKnobcheese Erasing material to reuse the film was common practice... it's unforgiveable in a sense, but it was part of the routine back then. I still hope that there are private collectors who taped the lost shows off of the television. Hopefully they're out there. He's a genius.

I think to say that russel brand is representative of british comedy today is somewhat overplaying your point. There are thoughtful (and thought provoking) comedians today as well such as mitchel and webb, as well as some absolutely awful acts/programes.
