I don't think there is a more universally liked footballer than Peter Crouch. I once bumped into him at the Belfry Hotel in Sutton Coldfield in 2001/2. He was still a teenager and had just signed for Aston Villa and I was attending a conference through my work. Villa were obviously housing him to at the hotel. We shared the stairs to our rooms and he seemed surprised that I recognised him when I asked him how he was settling in at the Villa. Looking back, and now having kids older than Crouch was then, it must have been difficult being that age and on your own in a "posh hotel". Perhaps I should have checked all was well He is a credit to his profession and to his family.
