There was one competitor at the VII. Tschaikowsky- Competition in 1982: Mr. James Barbagallo, who performed Rachmanninov's "Rhapsody on a theme of Pagannini" extraodinary. He deserved the 1st prize 'cause he directly touched the souls and hearts in the auditory. Unforgotten. Peter is a nice person who reflected this competition and was jury-member in 2011. Together with Vladimir Ovchinnikov.

This was one of the best performances of the 3rd concerto I've ever heard. Peter Donohoe's left hand octaves were perfectly executed, and the "accompaniment" in the big version of the first movement cadenza was quieter than I've ever heard - surely what Rachmaninov wrote, even though he himself couldn't perform.

Donhoe is a very respectfull musician who knows about the difficulties beeing part in a competition- no matter if as a competitor or as a jury member. 31 years after that event in Moscow , the performances of Ovchinnikov appears as techincal like a perfect clockwork but not as language of the heart. Donohoe did never convince my idea of interpretation but he is a true and talented pianist, who is always in doubt of questions concerning music without showing arrogance or so. Wish him the best.

Peter Donohoe was 6th in the Leeds 1981. Ovchinnikov won the Leeds competition. These two were not that great. The finnish press critic writer wrote the most boring pianist of all time Peter Donohoe. Ovchinnikov the wrong concert was the crtic this time

I once heard Donohoe in a church in UK and his playing was outstanding.Excellent
@fairly752 жыл бұрын
so let him play in the church, and leave the halls for the more talented. The Tchaikovsky competition was lobbied by the English crown in that year. in order for this gray moth to take second place, talented Russian pianists were not allowed to participate in the competition, so that this moth was not too gray.

This pianis changed my life in Glasgow concert hall in the late 1990s, even though I'm not on the path of music. He wish he knew what his performance did for me.

His approach to to music, and his approach to an instrument is unheard and an unsung heroism in music, and yet it completely explains the potential of human beings and us all who belong to that class!

And quite incompetent, too. Watch him take two full bars to realize he's way behind Donohoe's blindingly fast tempo...

I could be wrong, but I think Peter saved the day by adding an extra beat somewhere.
@carldicasoli5333 ай бұрын
@@LukeFaulkner Yes, you can hear the extra beat in the e-flat section with the thirty-seconds notes at 1:22 to 1:24 right on this video.
