Ive been a fan for at least 20 years and had no idea Tony was a master photographer. Now I have to take this opportunity to apologise to Mr. Levin for using flash taking picture of Tony at an aftershow meet and greet with TLB some 17 years ago in Moscow. He was tired and asked not to use flash, but I begged and he generously allowed it, being a gentleman. The show was killer and I got to meet and have a chat with everyone, Tony, Larry, Pete, Jesse and Jerry, incredible musicians and wonderful human beings. Great interview too, cheers!

Great interview! I was certainly aware of Tony's considerable skills as a musician but had no idea about his imaginative and creative photography! And the bonus is his humility and sense of humour. Seems like a quality guy.

I met Tony myself; twice, where I got to hang out with King Crimson for a few hours. He's a really great guy, and we had great conversations.

Photography is history...! In that times few had one and also didn't think to take snapshots.. We were a bunch off teens..! Heard and listened about Genesis, by older friends, Great Lamb Lies, Firth on firth, etc but in 1980 saw Peter Gabriel live, first time.. Mouth open trough the concert.. And started with the Intruder drum beat, were the hell are the musicians , they came trough the audience with flashlights and climbed to the stage.. Uauuu.. Unreal..! Was in Cascais, 6 Outuber 1980, with first part Band Talking Heads.. Was unknown but a very interesting first part band, remember really like the sound, and five years after the "Pop" Hit Don't You forget about me... OK.. Sure.. But good disco song to dance as also Solsbury hill...Peter Gabriel switched his sound 180 degree..! The first Trilogy records, great ones, but those days Solsbury Hill was the Hit, also Biko, etc.. Tony Levin didn't know him, a wonderful and powerful bass player, Called Him "Mr. Ming" because visually, no hair, big mostach and a rain coat, as also great musicians didn't know the David Rhoades, Sancious, Manu Katche, Jerry Marotta ( Great portuguese girlfriend, the beautiful Gabriela Schaaft and also play in Banda do Casaco, Rão Kiao.. Etc.)... Talking about 45 years ago.. After was 87 tour, etc... The Concerts / Tours always, not just the great songs and sound, but visilualy amazing, the concept, the criativity, the production. I'm a great Stones Fan, but also a great Peter Gabriel Fan.. Lot of diversify music taste and at home, like all of us, but He's a genius..

As I'm a lifetime fan of Peter Gabriel and Tony Levin, and also a professional musician and amateur photographer, this interview is absolutely fascinating and captivating. I'm learning an awful lot about Mr. Levin's photography here and hope to get to know more in the future. Thank you for this very enlightening moment!

Have been inspired by Tony since the 80s. He is the reason I picked up a bass and play it in my own way . Met him a few times and he is a humble kind soul generous with his time. I own one of his Bruford photos. He also photographed my son playing guitar which was a very cool moment for me.

Wonderful interview with Tony and what amazing photos! I have such magical memories of seeing Peter in 86! My friend who was a diehard fan and turned me on to him and early Genesis (May you rest in peace Rael) told me to get ready for the stage rush when he did "Lay Your Hands ..." We were not close enough to carry him but what a moment! We saw him a few times that year including a Womad performance at The United Nations where someone in the audience and myself caught a dove from the stage! Peter is a miracle !

Very interesting interview. I wish you could have asked him why he barely said a word in the KC film. He's such a talkative guy. Also, has he ever seen the BBC comedy series Brian Pern which parodies Peter's career.

What a fantastic interview! Love the stories of the old home dark rooms back in the day. How you had to choose from color or black and white BEFORE you shot. Classic! Remember it well.

When Tony talked about the smell of fixer in the darkroom it reminded me of something. When I was in photography school in 1981 we played a cassette of Robert Fripp's 'Exposure' in the darkroom and when the song Exposure came on all the other students were freaked out by the music. We were told never to play that song again! I believe Tony played bass on that song.

23:30 Wait.. so the real question is.. If Tony were a fan of Crimson, but had never been in the band.. would he have taken a picture without asking? (Don't let him answer) Awesome interview, I laughed out loud and learned new things!

I was into b&w photography with film back then and used to "add" color after print process with a spray on fixative and colored pencils...fun and interesting to take a b&w and pick some interesting bit to add a hint of color. Edit: My favorite photo is Peter pre fall into the crowd. The film of this move that's out there is so great. The crowd passes him seemingly gently, but they also rip his white jacket off and tear up his black tshirt and the security guys have to haul him back up on stage cause a few just won't let go.

I wonder if there will be much variance in the set list between the European shows and the ones Peter is planning in USA / Canada. Won't be long we'll be hearing about those rehearsals. Can't wait for the DVD of this. Which brings me to this question. Don't get me wrong I love books...(being an author myself) I bought Road Photos back in the day. Then it was KC and PG combined, right? But I wonder if Tony has given any thought into creating a video archive with different kinds of music mixed in to accompany the photos in his chosen sequential motion...

The verticle format has nothing to do with Artistic expression as for social Media. It's an effect of tech illiteracy, where people just can't fathom that one can rotate the phone, and it will work all the same! The phone even marks the camera orientation in the meta data, so you don't even have to rotate them in software anymore. Nothing like someone filming some event, and not getting half of what's going on just because they can't figure out 90° rotation!

@@gillento Thanks Gilles! Oops, my bad! [Correction made] At least I get the camera orientation right, even if I'm terrible thinking of factors, units, and conventions... on the fly!

My guess is that most TikTok users tend to use and view vertical format most often for practical reasons. And I’m sure one reason is that the smartphone is the preferred medium, rather than the tablet, where horizontal, or “landscape,” is the orientation by default.
@Bob-of-Zoid
@Bob-of-Zoid 5 ай бұрын
@@bargainbassist Sorry, but it's a very bad guess. I clearly stated why it's not at all impractical, nor a default! My very first smart phone with a camera; a 2004 Samsung A900M Blade flip phone had the option to take pictures and shoot video in either format, portrait or landscape, as did every digital camera before that, so it's only expectable the phones would too, and sure enough I have yet to hear of one that doesn't. I started the phone app and it's the first thing I had to click on before taking the picture, now the phones have accelerometers, and all you have to do is turn it and the rest is fully automatic. Also: The crappiest Video editing software can rotate a video in a few clicks, and even some basic players, no editing software needed. I can do it to a whole batch of photos, and even videos all at once right in my file manager on my Linux computer, no need to open the program that does the actual work. So yes, it is absolutely a result of tech illiteracy, and I dare to say a lack of basic logical thinking that may have evolved into a fashion, but a stupid one that serves no good purpose, and in my eyes just screams "look at me, I can't even figure out that I can get a shitload more into the shot if I turn the phone sideways"!
