This is one song where the lyrics are such an important part of this song. The emotive music followed the lyrics and visa versa. A political assassin / mass shooter with a powerful insight into the origins of his unloved damaged brain

Agreed. I don’t want to spoil it, so I’ll just say if you listen intently to the lyrics without knowing what they’re about, and you think about American history, you will get a point where the light bulb will come on and you will suddenly know exactly what it’s about! And you will be so sad! 😢 😢 😢

I was lucky to see Peter live in Madrid back in 1987. They started the show with San Jacinto. The memory will last as long as I live. Yousou N´Dour played as opening group and also joined Peter for some tracks of the album So. The energy of the concert, the music, the colours, the dancing as they played. It´s difficult to explain. The audience went nuts. Of course he performed his crowd surfing, he danced like there was no tomorrow and his vocals and emotion were unbelievable. The band was impeccable.I am a huge fan of Genesis, my favourite band, but Peter´s solo career is also a force to reckon with.

The JFK assassination has been a minor obsession of mine for many years, and I was clued into this song early on. It's from the point-of-view of Lee Harvey Oswald, the man who shot JFK (if you choose to believe the official story).

This wasn't about the JFK assassination, it was about shooting Alabama Governor George Wallace in 1972, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life, and it was inspired by the book An Assassin's Diary (1973).

Great! I was fortunate enough to see PG several times in the ‘80s, and every show was super awesome. I have to say my fave memory was during a San Diego show, when during the climax at the end of “Lay Your Hands On Me “, Peter stepped to the edge of the stage with his back to the crowd, and he just slowly let himself fall backwards off the stage and into/onto the hands of the crowd, who then passed him around as they held him in his back and above their heads, all while Pete is singing,, “Lay Your Hands On Me”. The single most surreal concert moment i ever experienced.

After I said a few times about early and most Genesis songs don't spend much time on the lyrics, for Peter Gabriel solo, the music is great and the lyrics are fantastic. "All you people in tv land, I will wake up your empty shells. Peak time viewing blown in a flash as I burn into your memory cells" Amazing every time. Take a turn with The Family and the Fishing Net...such a crazy odd dark song by Peter. Try examining word for word through the whole song. Every line and image created is something you are familiar with, yet never ever described this way. It's a wonderful puzzle to decipher and discover.
@Vince-lq3ve

@@kbrewski1 true enough. I'm generally not a lyric person so maybe I'm a bit biased in that direction. With Genesis I would always come to life on the instrumentals and also on the "sound" of the words, less about the story or underlying meaning. The music itself usually affects my mood far more than the meaning of the lyrics. With Gabriel solo I tended to eat up the words more just to appreciate his skill at cleverly getting his meanings across. (course I still loved some ole Genesis lyrics: "It is the scent of garlic, that lingers on my chocolate fingers" Love that one).

It's one of the most psychologically chilling & wrenching songs ever. PG read '73s," An Assains Diary"and was fascinated by the subjects' thoughts, feelings & mindset. He combined it w/ another "subject" Oswald & JFKs assassination. It's famiarity helps us understand the subject matter & draw us into the subject, a killers mind PG created from the real people & his thoughts. It's brilliant in splaying open his mind & dropping us in it. His feeling a connection to the victim; need for to feel known & express his dark frustration. To step out into & in a light he can't & hasn't felt. Human connection. It's brilliant, skin crawling & the end heart wrenching. Each time I hear it, I want to stop, feeling an accomplice to the killing. At the end, I always feel I never want to hear it again, but...

I applaud you for playing this. Most reactors wouldn't. There are a few "very profound" songs about "how assassins'" ended up doing what they do, about family dysfunction, being bullied, relationships, loneliness, etc. Harry Chapin does the best one called "The Sniper" he goes into full detail of the mans entire life, it is very very heartbreaking, emotional, blunt and last over 10 minutes I think. When I heard it first time on late night radio, I went out and bought the album, because it helps people to understand how messed up and why some people do what they do, the psychology of it. The other artist who sings about a killer is David Gilmour 'Murder" from his album 'About face", but it's about someone who kills with knife..

I do not think this is an assassin. I think this is just the child. I think this is the child acting out an assassination he saw on the news as he watches his parents' marriage fall apart. Hi Guys, Peter Gabriel is definitely theatrical and his time in Genesis was the same, telling stories and creating atmospheres, and of course his costumes on stage with Genesis becoming the characters he was singing about. His live solo performances are just as fascinating. At one live concert he is actually walking upside down above the stage. You would love watching him live. Its way beyond a band of musicians playing and him singing at the front with a mike stand....Forget all that ... He puts on a show ! This track is very intense in lyrics and music like a gripping movie. Brilliant album ! Great reaction, thankyou, byeee Jim X

In my mind I heard the beginning of the next song. Lol. Pete is a real artist. I got to see him in 1977 at a small club. He didn’t walk on water, but he did walk on tables. He came by us and there was some touching involved. The next tour was also at a small club. I was inches away. No touching. By the third tour, he had elevated to larger venues and throngs of worshippers. And I was done going to his concerts. Too many people. ‘Intruder’ is a good one also.

I hope you can make his "i/o" tour. Imagine it. Touring a new album release in at the age of 73. Amazing that Gabriel only spent six years with Genesis, and yet created some of the most iconic prog-rock ever. His solo career has spanned from about 1975 to NOW. It doesn't take that long to hear all of Peter's work with Genesis. But as far as his solo releases go? You are in for a very long road and endless treats as you dive into his solo work. Think of it. Almost a half century of solo work after already being in Genesis. I saw him for his very first solo tour for his album oft just called by his name or "Car". At The Roxy in Hollywood, with Fripp on rhythm guitar. I can't make his "i/o" tour. It would be bittersweet to see the first and what might be the last from one of the most profound musicians of our time. Blessings.

This is "hands down" my favorite PG album!!!!!!! I liked his previous two before this one, but this was the one that did it for me!!!!!! "I Don't Remember", "Intruder", "No Self Control", and "Biko" (pronounced Beeko) is a musical eulogy, inspired by the death of the black South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko in police custody on 12 September 1977. Gabriel wrote the song after hearing of Biko's death on the news. This album is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! Fun story about the cover photo (melting face); I have a friend who used to manage a record store back in the 80's. Genesis were on tour for their album DUKE during the summer of 1980 and came to Cincinnati, Ohio for a performance there. My friend had the honor of having Banks, Collins, & Rutherford at the store for a 'meet & greet' before their performance that night and got to chauffeur them around for dinner and so on. Anyway, when they were at the record store Phil Collins saw the promotional poster for Gabriel's 3rd album and said "Hey look, there's Pete doing his Richard Pryor impression🤣!!!!!!! Phil ever the comedian!!!!!! Collins played on several of the album's tracks. "Intruder" has been cited as the first use of Collins's Gated reverb sound. The 1980 Peter Gabriel album was when this effect first really showed its head in that form. The distinctive sound was identified via experiments by producer Steve Lillywhite, Collins and staff engineer Hugh Padgham, in response to Gabriel's request that Collins and Marotta not use cymbals during the album's sessions.

A good prep for the October concert…I’m so jealous…I’m too far away from any of his shows on this tour! And I’m too broke too! 😂🤗🤘

Beautiful fretless bass playing from John Giblin here, and sax from Dick Morrissey. He played the famous sax on the 'Blade Runner' soundtrack. Gabriel dares us to feel some sympathy for a political assassin on this masterpiece. I like your videos - bravo for putting the spotlight on these classics.

Great song for me for two reasons: the precise and particular piano composition/arrangment (the final section is amazing, finishing the song on that open 5th); and how *very* rocky the song gets, and notably (typical of PG) doing that _without_ any cymbals or cymbal crashes.

I like your pointing out the use of various instruments. Both Peter and Phil (Collins) and Genesis were very thoughtful in their use of sounds and instruments without overusing them gimmicks. I thought this song must be about JFK's assassination, but it is not. It is about the psychology of Arthur Bremmer, the guy who shot George Wallace in 1972. Peter said it is not political. Thanks for the 'heads up' about Al Stewart's June concert at The Soiled Dove in Denver. (not the Grizzly Rose by the way)

I've not read all the Comments here, but if this hasn't been mentioned yet, this song was inspired by the book An Assassin's Diary by Arthur Bremer. Bremer kept a diary as he stalked Nixon in 1972. But he actually shot Alabama Governor George Wallace instead.

It's just an incredible piece of work, musically and lyrically, that has been a cornerstone of my music collection, as well as my memory collection. I had just written a long comment on this album, but (fortunately for you all probably) I pressed the wrong key and erased it in error. Ho-hum, I shall save it for the inevitable forthcoming reaction to the ground-breaking 'Biko' off this wonderful album. Thanks NicknLex xx

I usually enjoy your reactions, but OMG...lyrically, this is mindblowing. Who would have the guts to write a song from the point of view of a psychotic assassin planning to kill a famous person? Concentrating ONLY on the music is always missing half the point of any song, but particularly this one. Many believed this was about the Kennedy assassination, but Peter himself has said that is not true.

You can't focus on the lyrics and music at the same time on a first reaction. Try it. It doesn't work. I would rather focus on the beautiful music than some dark lyrics. Yes, they might be amazing. That's what I read a book for. And we can't nip pick what song we will do only lyrics to and which only music. We will check out the lyrics on the second listen.

@@NicknLex Fair enough. You do what satisfies you. Back when I was your age, I always read lyrics as I listened, but that's me. A suggestion - listen to the music, but afterwards when you are discussing, it is easy enough to look at the lyrics on the internet to get the full picture. Gabriel took the effort to write the lyrics. Only right to read them.

@@Rickhorse1 We could do that as part of the video. Trust me when I listen to music I always read the lyrics. I have done so ever since I bought my first album. It's just so distracting while reacting and we are filming us too. It's just a bit too much doing all that in one single unedited take. I know it's frustrating for fans and I might be the same if people reacted to my favorite music.

I always took this as referring to the assassination of President Kennedy in the 60's. Maybe that's because I was a young kid then and saw all of the coverage on TV. I remember how devastated the nation was. This a great song from a great album.

This wasn't about the JFK assassination, it was about shooting Alabama Governor George Wallace in 1972, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life, and it was inspired by the book An Assassin's Diary (1973).

If you don't know the song... the best thing to do is NEVER pause as the transitions between parts are sometimes the most magical parts and you miss them, or can't appreciate them fully. The break in the music, is not just for the change in the music, it's a complete change in the emotion of the lyrics.

We’d love to be able to get away with that, but the record labels could then give us a copyright strike which puts our channel in jeopardy. There is a reason for the madness, though we’re not a fan for the need either.

The Pause spoiled it for me, as it is the contrast between sound that makes the story of JFK's assassination from Harvey's perspective so emotional an experience. Peter evokes emotion in all his work, his voice of the storyteller just pulls you in, throughout his career. Have seen him over many decades, although more recent shows lack the theatrics of his early stage presence, but still worth the admission 😅 May I suggest you listen to 'Intruder' my fav Peter track.

The Peter Gabriel 3 album is full of songs that are not just good music, but interesting and thought provoking. The pertinence of his observations on the sad banality of many assassins was made horribly clear with the murder of John Lennon only months later. It is very difficult to stick with a single favourite track from the album, but another which resonates to this day is "Not one of Us." The mindset he describes seems sadly more prevalent than ever.
