As a child, 4 yrs old to be exact, I used to take my brother's Walkman and hide in the hallway closet while my dad beat up my mom and I would always listen to this song for comfort as I covered myself underneath blankets so nobody could find me. I now know the meaning of this song and why I loved it so much. My soul, my higher-self was reaching me through song letting me know that there was more to life than what was around me. I recently discovered that I am a sensitive. My instincts did return and the grand facade surely did burn. I was finally reached from the inside. The veil has been lifted and I now know the world around me.

I really wonder why you didn't get that recognition in the 80's.

I always liked this song but it wasn't until I saw him singing it in concert, seems like he was advocating humanitarianism it open a new light to me and gave a entirely new meaning to the song. It was almost like his mind and mine were at the same place. I felt I could interpret every part of this song. As a adult I can finally understand this song. All my questions, all my problems, all my issues, have been resolved thanks this song. It seems he is advocating PURE LOVE. The song could be about a man or a women. Which is why he says he gets in his car in runs into this person everywhere he goes, because he interacts with humans on a everyday basis. Which is why we saw public area where a black man bumps into a white man. Its clear he gets angry sometimes but he comes backs to his senses and sees that person is just human like him, by him helping this person, he begins to have a epiphany , it clear what his purpose in life is when he looks into this persons eyes which is why he wishes to return to this person or someone like him someday. Christians also link helping each other as a means of creating purpose in ones life. This is why he says he is empty and lost sometimes, because of his misconception of love based on western culture and influence on love which isn't real love, so he is confused by love.. He feels useless until he begins to put others before him which is why he sets his pride a side, then this gave him a new meaning to live and redefines what love is to him entirely, and what is lost or incomplete in his life, is now complete. Jesus Christ is the Messiah of Humanism, we can not deny that. And since his death, the establishment has exploited his name and demeaned his teaching for the sake of money and power. This is why he says a 1000 church doors open. Because of this he saw a answer that not even a thousand churches can solve, something that is nearly impossible for the church to do. When you look into someones eyes, its a personal connection, you can see yourself and therefore gain an emotional attachment to that individual. Because the resolution was clear that we need to humble ourself to each other. This is why he said the Grand Facade has finally burned. Because its no longer about him or an establishment, but about serving and loving others. Pure Love is a bond like brothers and sisters. something the world lacks to understand because of our religious views that separate them. He is singing about world peace this is why he hates to see so much pain. Thats the meaning it gives to me. But it also seems he is removing christ from the picture. For when you speak in the name of love, your not speaking in the name of christ and christian teach that christ is love. So it seems the song is about pure humanism. Fruitless searches seems to represent peoples search for religion for self identification. But its very clear that we can have christ like behavior without throwing our beliefs on one another. something christ himself believed. Something that a 1000 churches can not and will never do. I think he sees the light as a way of saying that he is enlighten by looking into this person eyes. Humanism began its proposal during the 1700 , during the enlightenment period. Grand Facade means some large establishment or self image. So he could be talking about the destruction of his selfishness or his views on the church. This makes sense since Gabriel has strong christian ties but is very liberal, so you know this man has probably struggled and questioned his faith. This song came out in 1986 which was the same year Peter Gabriel joined Amnesty International. A international human rights group in which he began his long public and very active movement for human rights.. So there you have it guys. The cats out the bag. This song is about humanism.

Y'all...one man wrote this song. Just Peter Gabriel, by himself. And it is one of the most beautiful and meaningful songs ever written. In the 1980s, you also had 24-year-old George Michael penning "Father Figure" all on his own. Imagining writing something that deep at just 24. These days, we've got five or six people coming together to pen a bunch of non-sensical lyrics and put a melody to them. I tell you, music isn't what it used to be.

From a rich guy who can buy anything but don't, to starving kids in Africa, music is meant to capture the sould of a person. When I hear this song it does that for me, "Thanks Peter for Making it" but let's get back to it. I see no reason why man's greed have poision us today. in the 80's Peter Gabriel was a precursor in video as Michael Jackson. Going further than the other. He's the one to come with world music, internet music production, new ideas on videos (for michael it was short movies with choregraphies and Peter is all in images and metaphysics). The song is about someone who is searching outside what he's got inside, in my humble opinion. When he realised it, he surrendered. You exist in the eyes of the other. His/her eyes are your mirror!
