This is one of his most outstanding songs on this outstanding album. I was so lucky to see him at Roseland in NYC on this tour. The opening of "Rhythm of the Heat" as he walked through the crowd with all of his musicians following him and playing percussion was too much to bear! You can see photographs of this show on the inside sleeves of the CD reissue of "Security." I was looking down from the front row balcony at that very show. He dove backward and had the crowd carry him back to the stage that night, during "Lay Your Hands On Me." Unforgettable! I was 23 years old. What a show!

The opening act for this tour was Electric Guitars. See also the back sleeve of the 2-LP set "Plays Live" for a photo of Peter being carried by the crowd while performing this song.

I don't know how I managed to miss this, but tonight is the first time I listened to this song with an excellent set of headphones.... I've heard Lay Your Hands On Me over a hundred times and tonight I really heard it for the first time... Oh. My. Goodness. The depth, layers, and nuance of this song is phenomenal... I knew it was good but I never knew it was THAT good....

Not having the talent to play an instrument I realized how amazing music was for our being once I was introduced to PG first year of college 1982. Listen to the drums in this song! Peter's lyrics, beats, sonic palette are genius personified. Listening to all of his music has enriched my life. Meeting him is a bucket list wish. I'm so thankful he has continued his craft and enriched the musical universe. Thank you Peter Gabriel!!!

think he was one of the first musicians to trust the crowd and fall into the audience and all were laying their hands on him. and pushing him through the crowd like he was floating....was so cool to see him do that ..saw him 3 times, always a great show, brings back great memories..I'm old now :-(

I bought this album in '83, at age 16, after hearing Rhythm of the Heat and San Jacinto on a niche radio program. I can safely say it completely changed my outlook on music (and life). It was also my avenue to discover Peter Hammil, who sings backing vocals on this song, a genius in his own right.

This, in my opinion, is the Greatest Christian Pop(?huh?) rock (?what? are you sure about that genre?) song ever. I know things, because I’m old/young (57) and have not only been listening to this song since age 15, I had the Privilege of seeing it performed in 1983, at the Greek Theater, in 1983. I guess I Am a lucky little ducky, but I do need to get back to Thucydides, I’m only through Book 5 ✝️
