You should definitely check out Gabriel's video of "Don't Give Up," his duet with the great Kate Bush (Peter and Kate are both musical geniuses). This song has been credited by many hurting people of saving their lives from suicide (even Elton John who said the song changed his mind about taking his own life by drug overdose).

So let's tell my story. I saw Peter Gabriel when he was the lead singer of Genesis. The concert was in Cascais, Portugal, in March 1975, many years ago. It was unforgettable for several reasons: it was Genesis, the entrance control didn't work very well and there was chaos with the police trying to control the crowd. It ended very well. A late dinner with the Band at the hotel where they were staying, I was with the producers of the show who were my friends

I saw him in the 80s the the Forum in Los Angeles (Inglewood). Best live show I've ever seen. During "Lay Your Hands On Me" he stood at the edge of the stage, turned his back to the crowd, and dropped backward. They caught him and crowd-surfed him to the back of the arena and back to the stage while the band vamped. It took about 10 minutes and the crowd went mental. He made it back minus a shoe and picked up where he'd left off. This was a decade before grunge crowd-surfing & stage diving became a thing (though admittedly punk had kinda pioneered it). You certainly never saw anyone this famous do it. The trust was astounding. He ended with "Biko" -- a track moving enough as it is, but during the outro, with the crowd singing along, the band laid down their instruments one by one and left the stage until it was only the drummer and the crowd singing. Then the drummer stopped and it was ten thousand people singing acapella. It went on and the lights came up and we all looked at each other and laughed and cheered. Other than at raves, I have never felt so connected with a crowd. His sound quality, band, and technology were exceptional -- he was one of the first to go completely wireless, to use in-ear monitors and headset mics. He and his band's freedom of movement on the stage were extremely unusual at the time. Truly an amazing singer, composer, and performer.

Many years ago, I went to England and stayed in the beautiful and picturesque city of Bath and one day I did go up to Solsbury Hill which overlooks the city... a breath taking view of the city that inspires the Jane Austen novels, the terrace (row) homes shaped in arcs... the memory of being there was that of joy.

Gabriel is a genius. The song is in 7/4 but by starting the vocal melody on the 5, (which most people will believe is the 1 of the next measure) he effortlessly takes the listener past "skipped" beat. He is one of the most important figures in Prog Rock due to his founding work with Genesis and his incredible solo work which includes movie scores like "The Last Temptation of Christ" by Martin Scorsese. He is truly a rare talent.

I thought I was never going to make io my 18th birthday and now I'm 61 as of Wednesday,; this song still makes me weep, I was waiting for my knight in shining armor to save me and now I know that I am my Knight in shining armor.

I was lucky enough to go to the Wembley concert back in 1990 after Nelson Mandela had been released. He was there and Peter did Biko then - over 70k fans punching the air sing the OH OH OHs back to him. Still gives me goosebumps and I had no voice for the next three days. Wallflower (written after reading an Amnesty Ineternational article about S American political prisoners) is the one that one makes me cry.

Well Sebs, I'm here because I'm one of those very old dudes... Old enough to be your grandad... and I bought the album that this was on way back in 1977. And I'm here on this day to relieve that "first time" listening moment with you. If was off of his first solo album. And yes, I was lucky enough to go and see him back in 2013 when he toured the anniversary of the So album.. (you know the one with Sledgehammer and Big Time on it - along with so much more)... Typically with Peter he made each night special and not only did you get an amazing live performance, along with light show and wonderful musicians, I was also able to go to his website and order a CD of the concert, recorded on the night I was there... He did that for every night on that tour, so everyone could have a CD of THEIR own special night. That is the care and thought the Peter puts into making sure his fans and, ultimately, audience are rewarded for their support. As I said in the beginning i'm old enough to have been listening to him when he was the singer for Genesis.... and i think it would be good for you to experience one of the premier prog bands playing you their music.. And of course, you might of heard of their drummer.... One Phil Collins.. Glad you enjoyed the song and thank you for that walk down memory lane..!! Keep on Rocking young sir

I cannot begin to tell you what the experience was. And always, at every concert, he plays Solsbury Hill. And always it is a party, uplifting, just feeling awesome. My husband died 6 years ago and every time I hear Sollsbury Hill I feel the uplifting again and he's with me dancing around. It makes me smile and be grateful for having such good memory's.

Pete was the only member of Genesis who had a wife, and when she was experiencing a very touch and go childbirth with his first daughter Anna , ye hd to consider, and choose grown up decisions, Genesis and Rock Star stuff, vs a wife/kid and other grown up stuff, and pursuing music on his own terms. The odd instrument played by bassist Tony Levin is called The Chapman Stick, played by “tapping” a string rather than plucking or strumming, and uses highly sensitive pickups. I saw his show about 6 times during the 80s and 90s, but my most memorable experience at a Gabriel show was at my first show of his, when he performed Lay Your Hands On Me, and proceeded to let himself fall backwards of the stage, caught, and passed around by the crowd, all the while singing, Lay Your Hands On Me. Chills to this day at the memory!

The instrument the bass player is playing is a Chapman Stick, which has 12 strings, 6 bass and 6 treble. Tony Levin is one of the greatest Stick players, and has been playing it with Peter since he was brought in as a sideman to work on Peter's first solo album in 1976, and showed up with his brand new Stick which had just been delivered, and which he was still learning. Tony and Peter have been playing together ever since. Also, Tony met King Crimson leader Robert Fripp in those same sessions (same week, in fact), and Tony would play with him in Crimson from its reformation in 1981 until its most recent end in 2021. I was lucky enough to see Peter in concert first in 1982, on the tour for his Security album, and it was amazing. I saw his tours for every album from then up through the tour for Us in 1993(?). He has been at the forefront of stage dramatics since his start in Genesis in the very early 1970s, originally to hide his stage fright in his early appearances. My wife (who also loves his work) insists that he continues to stage the big set-pieces in order to help mask that he really can't dance. :)

I saw Peter in 1994 do this and his biggest hits at Woodstock 94. I am here because you are a bit of a musician and understand the all might groove, and the intricacies of dynamics, and even the cheats that musicians (and posers) use. You have a very honest approach in your analysis, and a level headiness(most of the time, some songs are overwhelming) in your descriptions. Thanks for making it feel like hanging at a friends house, listening to songs and actually talking about them. Not only the music is nostalgic, but the whole setting takes me back.

I've seen him live 4 times, all here in the US (expat Brit). The first time was in 2002 for the Growing Up Tour (the one in the video when he's riding the bicycle), twice at Red Rocks Ampitheatre - his concert with the New Blood Orchestra in 2011 (Denver happened to have a spectacular lightning storm that night so the atmosphere was especially electric) and again the following year for the Back To Front tour. Finally again, back in Denver in 2023 for his newest album i/o (at the ripe old age of 73....him, not me!). Peter Gabriel is pure joy to the ears and the soul. I guess you could technically say I've seen him 5 times live as I was also at Wembley back in the UK in 1990 for the concert for Nelson Mandela's release celebration and he was there and sang Biko. 70,000+ fans with fist pumping the air and singing along to Biko is a moment I will never forget and also the reason I decided that I had to go.

When we visited England in 2012, while in Bath I insisted that we go climbing up on Solsbury Hill, which was an Iron Age hill fort. I put an earphone splitter in the iPod and we listened to the song and started dancing around like fools. No eagles flew out of the night, but three hot air balloons did appear cresting the hill from Batheaston below and went straight over us, so low we could see the people looking down and their burners going on and off. It was magical. Until some local dogs pissed off the bull who was up there with a herd of cows, and the bull looked at us as if to say "hey, leave your things, I've come to chase you home". Great memory every time I hear this song.

You often ask what brings us to these videos...for me, it's a combination of things. I think I just enjoy seeing people who love music having a chance to discover something I've loved for ages. Think it goes back to my college days around the dorm, when everyone had a bunch of albums that you'd never heard before, and we'd all try to turn each other on to what we enjoyed. Sometimes a buddy would mention that he didn't like a particular band that I did, and I'd take that as a challenge to handpick a selection they would like - it was just fun to play DJ and "convert" someone into a fan. For this one in particular, I've known the song for years, but I'd never seen the video, but being somewhat familiar with how he's performed, I knew it'd be worthwhile. Enjoy your reactions, because they're always thoughtful, and it's clear you really just enjoy good music!

I saw him in 96 in Oakland. One of my oldest and best friends Vince Foster was his lighting designer so we went early for sound check. Vince had an idea that Peter should pop in through a trap door in the stage on a little bed at the start of Shock the Monkey. They tried it and put it in the show. The newspaper review the next day mentioned it as a highlight of the show! It was so cool to witness the theatrical artistic openness to try something new. Hats off to Vince also for the idea and courage to suggest. He told me when we were teenagers growing up in Hitchin UK that one day he was going to work for Gabriel and Phill Collin’s and he has done both proving all our dreams are given to achieve. Sebs, your channel is superb and your character, compassion and soul are what makes it awesome. Thank YOU. That vid of Shock the monkey would be another winner by the way.

Rick Beato just did a great interview with Tony Levin, the bass player in these videos. Levin also played with Robert Fripp and King Crimson.

I was at the tour with the white jacket, mid 1980s. It was amazing, such a performer. It was in Glasgow and I sat beside the band Simple Minds. Such a great gig, great songs such as Biko, Games without Frontiers and In your eyes.

At 5:28 I believe you’re looking at Tony Levin playing the Chapman Stick. Levin worked with many people as a season player. The producer of Gabriel’s first solo album, Bob Ezrin, brought Tony in. One of the greatest bass players ever.

Today I told my husband all about you and the love that you have for you family. Love Peter Gabriel singing Salisbury Hill. Can I please suggest that you have a listen to Nik Kershaw a star in the 90’s writes his own songs and is still doing gigs today. Keep doing what you do Seb and Mrs Seb.😊

I wasn’t able to see him on his big solo tours. But, I did see him on a David Bowie tour when he was still doing some of the face paint and costumes of the Genesis era. Great concert - Bowie, Peter Gabriel and the Tubes on the same bill, stadium concert on a warm sunny day in Alberta. I first got into Genesis around the Selling England by the Pound era. Many great Genesis tunes you might like.

Whenever you're going to listen & react to a song for the first time, you should do the studio version. The bands have played these songs hundreds of times, and when performing live, tend to "Take liberties" with the music or the lyrics. This works in a concert setting, cause everyone is amped up and into it. But if you're doing a reaction, you should be listening to the song the way it was recorded, the way the public first heard it, the way that made it a hit in the first place.

The bass instrument you're asking about is a Chapman Stick. Full range instrument that's tapped rather than plucked, so you play it with both hands on the fingerboard. Tony Levin uses it mostly as a bass with PG. And live? Yes...dude, if Peter Gabriel tours again, go. Every show is amazing in its own way. Tony (the bass player) is 78 years old, now. Peter Gabriel is 74. The last show I saw was last October, 2023. Before that was the "bicycle show" and that was in 2011. I hope he will tour again soon. I don't miss Peter Gabriel shows...you really can't find anyone quite like him. Everything you said about the last video you reviewed was true of all his shows. He only works with amazing people. He is as generous as anyone alive with stage time, and featuring his fellow musicians. The projection show from the last tour was INSANE. Really like nothing I'd ever seen, just the inventive way they used video. I can't say enough good things about him. This was the first song of his I ever heard, and it's still special to me. I'm not that big a music fan. I'm a musician, so I've got my own little world to worry about. But I will swim through a river of whatever I have to swim through to get to a Peter Gabriel show. You've really caught onto what is special about him. Even in a huge arena, the way he connects with the audience is stunning. I'm not sure there will ever be anyone who can equal him--the way he makes everything seem effortless. Then you walk away and think about what you saw, and realize just how difficult his shows are on every level. The amount of personal responsibility for each person on that stage is insane..

ALL of the members of Genesis were of the highest quality. Excellent to notice how long Peter's musicians have been with him. Phil Collins is the same. Genesis had great songwriters. They were amazing in how they could use unusual time signatures to create the mode. Tony Banks wrote 'Mad Man Moon' metaphorically asking Gabriel "Why did you leave?" Solsbury Hill was Peter's answer. The eagle that flies out to him is a metaphor for Peter's father who gave him guidance during this momentous decision time in his life.

Saw him 4 times since 1994 its always a rock show, theater and more - check out also heś album „Us“. He has been on the forefront using new technologies in the music and also for he’s live performances and was really pushing the world music movement from the 80s on.

I just discovered your channel and love it. Kept me up until 1 in the morning the first time I watched. But...the generational differences fascinate. I'm 60, and the idea that you had never heard of Mark Knopfler and Dire Straights baffles me. If you want to hear a thing of beauty, watch Tina Turner's Private Dancer, the long version. Mark Knopfler wrote the entire song and plays the extended guitar solo. It's amazing

Of course you should listen to Genesis. Start with the Gabriel era, please, if you do. I saw Gabriel twice when he started his solo career. He is just amazing on scene. Great memory. It was the first time I saw someone jumping in the audience and letting people carry him through the hall (that was in Strasbourg, France).

You should definitely check out Genesis, before and after Peter Gabriel left. I was only 10-11 at the time and discovering Genesis, without even knowing at the time that he had been a part of the group. I saw him solo once in the 80's, and saw Genesis a bunch of times but never got to see a Phil Collins solo concert.

To fully appreciate this song, you must listen to the studio version and pay attention to the kick drum to pick up on the unusual time signature. One of my favorite songs of all time. And yes, Genesis both with and after Peter Gabriel (very different music under Phil Collins' direction) are worth a listen.

Peter Gabriel was so awesome, that I took my ex girlfriend and my new girlfriend on our first real outing (who became my wife) to his concert. We already had tickets before things had fallen apart, but he put on an unforgettable show and we all had a good time. He always put on a fantastic and well thought out presentation of his music which made his concerts unforgettable.

Been a Gabriel fan since I first saw him with Genesis at CWRU in Cleveland, 1973. They performed in the gym!!!! Last saw Peter in 2023 for the I/O tour. That show was almost a religious experience. The band sounded magnificent and the video throughout was otherworldly. Not sure if anyone else commented here, but the instrument you saw Tony Levin playing is a Chapman Stick. It's a 10 string instrument that one plays by "tapping" the strings for notes and chords. Levin is one of probably 8 people in the world that have mastered this thing. If you haven't heard Gabriel doing Firth of Fifth with Genesis, do so. Not Phil Collins Genesis version(s). Do the original with Peter.
