I've always been impressed by the fact that this song is in 7/4 time, but does not feel awkward at all.
@justintime42000
@justintime42000 3 жыл бұрын
Most people don’t realize it’s in 7/4 because it just pulsates along with a steady beat and the music flows naturally on top. The musicians usually pick up on the odd time signature on their own right away though! I’m always aware of it whenever I listen to this song. It became a habit to count it out and feel that 7th upbeat note so many years ago.

Broken up by the two 4/4 measures at the end of the chorus to stutter into the next verse. Masterful use of odd time, included as the lead example in David Bennett's discussion of 7/4 (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4akZ6FtnrCYj7M). One thing I find particularly tasty is how the feel seamlessly switches from a 3-4 pairing in the intro to a 4-3 pairing once the actual verse begins.

There are a few great songs throughout pop music where the artists have been able to deliver a song that is more sophisticated than the average listener would realise. The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Sting, Zeppelin, they’ve all managed to sell very large volumes of music that was odd time to an audience that would normally prefer 4s, 2s, or sometimes 3s and 6s. I didn’t mention bands like Rush, Yes, etc., because it’s probably not so much pop music when they delve into odd times.

This song is special to me. I was in the service and abroad when this came out but I was from Chicago, into the prog-rock scene and knew Peter had married into a Chicago family by this time. Because of complications with the birth of their daughter, Peter and his wife were rooted there. This broke up the Lamb Lies Down tour in the US and resulted in him eventually breaking with the band. As I said, I was in the military and on an isolated post on Lampedusa, a proverbial desert island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea and pining for Sweet Home Chicago myself. I could tune in this BBC Foreign Service radio station in on good nights and had heard 'Solsbury Hill' debut on a rock show with Peter being interviewed IN CHICAGO! The USO would send us records free, so based on hearing that song and feeling the same longing for redemptive validation and homecoming I ordered this album along with Jefferson Starship 'Red Octopus', Neil Young 'Zuma' and Bruce Springsteen 'Born To Run'. And those, ladies and gentlemen were the albums to have on your "proverbial desert island" in 1975

The main reason I love this song: It’s the sound of unadulterated joy and release. Other reasons: The main riff, the buildup, the flute, the vocal melody, the electric guitar crashing in, the bass drum heartbeat, the 7/4 time signature, the inspirational lyrics, the scatting in the fade, the “boom boom boom,” and the fact that I’ve heard it in a zillion movie trailers about “going home.”

Gabriel's story of his breakup with Genesis... "Which connection I should cut. I was feeling part of the scenery. I walked right out of the machinery." Amazing song... Amazing artist who would continue to flourish long after Genesis. True story: I have the Japanese import album and the lyrics listed, instead of saying "I tell them what the smile on my face meant," they say: "I tell them not to spy on my basement." lol... Between Gabriel, Genesis, and your XTC reacts, it's an amazing run of great stuff. Carry on, Justin!

One of my favorite songs of all time, never tire hearing it. According to an article in GP magazine, the guitarist was a studio hire, this was the last song recorded and Fripp had to leave, and he came up with the guitar parts and the 7/4 time after hearing Peter play it on piano. Yea I agree to me the song has a reference to the crucifixion but that's just me.

Oh. Two videos today. PG and G... in a row ! I climbed Solsbury Hill once. A sort of pilgrimage. 30 years ago. Guys I've got news for you : there are no eagle up there. Mister Gabriel seems to be obsessed with those birds. Again a famous song in 7/8 (most of the time). To me, the best live version is from the Plays Live tour. As far as I know it's the only (recorded) one in which he doesn't mess up the ending lyrics. Again a great and smart review. Thank you. Finally a good thing happened to ends the day.

On a rainy night, New Year's Day, 1986, I was riding on a bus from Dover, England to London. Along the way we passed an exit that was for Solsbury Hill. I then told my friend that I was travelling with story of Gabriel's song, and how it was about his coming to the decision to leave Genesis. Years later, my friend told me that whenever he hears this song, he thinks about that bus ride, and me talking about the song. This is one of my all-time favorite songs. I think the reason being is because the lyrics allow the listener to apply their own situation of coming to a decision to make a major change in their own life.

I tried hard to appreciate Genesis, however when Peter went solo and began experimenting with synths and programmers, it was like pouring liquid fuel on a musical fire. He really blossomed as an artist. IMHO. And, as a fearless World Music promoter, he exposed many of us to World sounds we may have never had the opportunity to enjoy. The "So' and "Us" albums are my faves. Happy discoveries Justin.

When this landed, we bought and studied the entire package, as was the practice in those days. What do these packets of water on the car signify? This song was assumed to be his explanation about leaving Genesis. I remember being intrigued by what I perceived to be an invisible thread binding several influences together, but was unsure what it was until a strange woman handed me a book called "Meetings with Remarkable Men". Damned if it didn't answer the question, and define the coming decades. Solsbury Hill is near Bath, where Peter's WOMAD is located. A wondrous and beautiful place on this Earth. I could live there.

Cheers.... oh, and if you ever need or want another recommendation on a catchy, jazzy instrumental that has epic musicians and the muscianship thru the roof, try Jeff Becks, Blue Wind off his Wired album. Jan Hammer wrote the song, plays on it and the rhythm section is just as amazing as Tommy Bolin's Marching Powder. IT is that good. Cheers Buddy, best first listen page on You Tube.... out.

I have always called the intro to Solsbury Hill "a quiet apocalypse". It goes from light, jaunty folk guitar to that devastating synth flute line. This song has a triangle solo instead of a guitar solo. That says everything about Peter Gabriel music.

Never heard it? Bet you'll want to hear it again! Such a great debut album with a superb assortment of songs. Take Excuse Me, Humdrum, Down the Dolce Vita for example.

This is a very fine album and great single. As a Genesis fan I was looking forward to this solo album and I was not disappointed. Nice one JP.

I've never listened to his solo albums, but there was no getting away from this. Top 20 single back in the day, and I've heard it a zillion times. Bit samey, nothing special, not the worst thing I've heard.

Look up the "DNA Live" version of this. It's 40 years worth of concert footage of it being performed all cut together. Just shows how brilliant a live performer Peter is, and how he's maintained that to this day.

A wonderful synthesis of catchiness and progginess. Others have commented on pronunciation of the title. British English uses a lot of unstressed vowels, whereas American speakers tend to give equal weight to every syllable, possibly under the influence of Spanish, although it could also be the way spelling is taught through syllabic chanting in US grade schools. British diction has been worn down by centuries of usage. It makes reading and spelling more challenging, but also gives the language what poets refer to as its unique "sprung rhythm".

Saw Peter on his first solo tour. Between songs someone shouted out, 'Peter you're God'. Peter replied, 'No we're just friends'. Which goes back to the line about turning water into wine. Some fan worshiped Peter. And he wanted to put an end to that.

I've always loved the line "you can keep my things, they've come to take me home" and how it conveys the feeling of not wanting to be encombered by all the meaningless trappings of life while one is on a journey to one's true self e.g. "home."

Yes! I'm glad JP commented on that. I think it's so interesting that at first, he keeps repeating that he needs to "grab his things", like, he is planning on leaving, but he has a few things left to finish. He needs to pack, etc., but then at the end he is ready to leave it all, like basically, you know what? You can just keep my stuff, I'm leaving anyways. Interestingly, I also kind of feel like that was his attitude with the guys. Like he was like, you guys (Genesis) can keep my/our style (proggy, fantastical folk rock, which they would kind of do up until Duke at least), whereas he would, you'll see, start trying out all kinds of new and varied music (at least on his first album), and even though he'd eventually get to what I really think can be called "Prog Pop" or Art-Rock, but basically in the same vein as later Genesis stuff, I think he took his time to explore what he was interested in creatively, and so incorporated his world music, which he most probably wouldn't have gotten to do with Genesis. I mean, no offense, but if you have access to such fantastic musicians as Banks, Collins, Rutherford, and Hackett, you aren't gonna tell them, "Hey, don't use cymbals here, or let's focus on non-traditional drums, add in an orchestra, cut out the synth work, etc." So, realistically, it probably did work out for the best (even though personally and selfishly I would LOVE to see Gabriel perform one last time with the band. Either in studio, or just as a co-headlining tour, where he sings a few songs with them!). But one can only dream!

I can't wait until you review "Moribund the Burgermeister"! The rest of PG 1 is ok, but that's absolutely a must-listen. The logical transition from Genesis to post-Genesis Peter Gabriel. This is a great song too. Definitely one of his best. It's a testament to Peter's maturing songwriting & artistry that my girlfriend can't stand anything by Genesis but loves Peter's solo work.

The whole leving Genesis and "part of the machinery" thing now somehow reminds me at Marko Hietala and that maybe in the end the industrie was more or less always the same, even if some specific mechanisms have changed. Funny story, i was actually introduced to that song by my very first girlfriend who told me he was the ex singer of Genesis while i at that time only knew "And then there were three" from Genesis. I think i was 14 maybe at that time, and was maybe the only time in my life where i learned something about music i didn't knew from a girl.

This song was recently used in a widely used advertising campaign featuring George Clooney. The beginning of the ad has Clooney wearing a medieval costume. Tony Levin is pretty much Gabriel's go to bass/chapman stick player for pretty much his entire career. That was a good get. Robert Fripp also was featured on this album. Gabriel managed to have great musicians work with him his entire career.

The "city lights" were of Bath in SW England. Solsbury Hill is an Iron Age settlement just outside Bath. Gabriel was living in the area at the time.
