Hot take: REM was America's answer to Midnight Oil. Politically charged lyrics, bald front man, similar core musical influences.

Inspirational human being. "Don't be self-conscious....just take it to the max" Peter certainly has proved that out. The band is killing it on their final tour that is underway right now.. All the passion is still there and at age 69, Peter Garrett is still busting the moves......just like he always has.

This is a really great interview that in many ways teases out the evolution of my understanding of the place that the Aboriginal peoples have in our national discourse. Peter's remarks around not having a proper understanding of the social injustices of colonisation in his and my formative years ring perfectly true with me. Aboriginal interaction with white people was taught to us at at school (1970s) in a very trite way, that could easily be ignored by us white people. Now respect for first nations peoples and the recognition of social injustice ais a mainstream cause. The Oils opened my eyes to so many important social issues and I am so bloody proud of them as an Australian. Bless 'em forever.

This man, Peter Garrett, is one intelligent caring human. Some people/artists will say things or seem to become activists yet they dont believe one word they are saying. They do it just to make themselves become more popular. Im not saying all of them do that, but you can see the ones that do. This man, truly stands behind his message and is honest and humble. In my opinion Peter Garrett is Australia's Treasure and should be admired by him, and the entire band.❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤 I am in Canada and we have similar issues for our Indigenous people. To think that so many unmarked graves all of Indigenous children have been found is nauseating to me. God only knows how many more there are. So, the same as Peter Garrett, it is their land and we should give them respect.

Thank You Moana for this interview with Peter Garrett. His comments on Rupert Murdoch were not just spot on, it's the heart of what has evolved into antagonistic conservative media. I understand that in the UK, the Murdoch family was not just shut down they had their visas revoked and were pushed out and that is how they ended up in the US and Canada. The Murdoch effect here in the US is repeating like really bad heartburn. The billion dollar court cases against The Murdochs by Dominion and now Smartmatic might just end the Murdoch's run in North America altogether and send them packing back to Australia permanently.

6:29 No one ever questioned why they were singing songs about Aboriginal people. Not that I heard their words as being controversial and I'm from the west of Sydney. Busby, Miller Cartwright. Places you'd expect highly racist sentiments but the fact is. Aborigines lived with us and we lived with them. We never held those expect racist views. How could we, they were our neighbours. The people we interacted with on a daily basis.....They were just people in our community. What I hear is Garrett just being a politician. Causing controversy and sales for his records.

I didn't like Beds Are Burning as much because it sounded commercial. Place Without a Postcard is also my favourite. Red Sails, and 10, 9, 8 close. Ah, who am I kidding. There are no non-favourites.

"Forward motion... taking it to the max... is everything", but is it? I could write more. Out of respect for Peter Garrett as a fellow human being, his subseuquent appearance on 'Australian Story' (i.e. after this appearance on 'Te Ao with Moana') and the uploading of that interview by the 'Australian Broadcasting Corporation' to 'KZbin' (which prompted my comment here... see below), I shall leave it at that. Please note: the Australian Broadcasting Corporation has disabled comments under the aforementioned 'Australian Story' episode. They state in the description of the video that appearing on 'Australian Story' requires a significant investment of time and energy. This is in the context of stating that not all have accepted their invitation to appear on the program because they are too busy. Of course, by implication Peter Garrett did make the time and energy sacrifice. Disclosure: it was watching that 'Australian Story' episode which has prompted my comment here. I chose this video featuring Peter Garrett as it most closely resembled the scope of the 'Australian Story' episode. At least so far as I was able to find. I am thankful to 'Te Ao with Moana' for the opportunity to make this comment. Thank-you. I am not in the business of cutting myself off from those who read my words. If anyone wishes to contact me to have a conversation about my (largely rhetorical) question at the outset to this comment then you are welcome to reply to me here. Perhaps then we are able to take the conversation elsewhere i.e. out of respect to all involved here. In the meantime (as the expression goes), I appreciate your time and attention in reading.

David Bowie was a musical genius and seemingly a great person, but his self-righteousness about other countries' "racism" was more than a bit myopic. I mean any time someone from England (or France, Spain, Portugal etc.) tries to lecture Australians or Americans about racism, surely they are overlooking that Western Europe effectively invented colonialism and the Atlantic Slave Trade. Plus many of those same countries resisted immigration and continue to resist it to this day. So it's great to address those issues but...fix yourself first.

it is complicated.. initially over 160k thousand people were trafficked to Australia.. 1 in 5 was a boy child aged between 10 and 14.. many of the female convicts brought children with them.. inhumane conditions.. it’s a sad story all round.. a sad state of affairs.. “you wouldn’t read about it” ☝️

Garret is a perfect example of how music should not cross into politics. Just like bono and Lennon they are great musicians but not politicians, Bowie is another one, great musician but what people don’t realise is musicians are musicians they are in their own world, they ain’t politicians and certainly not good at making decisions for everyone else. This woman loves people like this because she is a racist.
