This was a great thing to do. I can't imagine anyone else who would take the time to don this for a group like Peter and Gordon, who are probably not so well known anymore. So glad he included Land of Oden and 3:10 to Yuma among the picks. I'd only add Stranger With a White Dove.

Thank you, Matt, for playing the album cuts and non-hits. I've been saying for years that the true mark of a good act was the rest of the album, not the hits. I agree with you about Peter and Gordon. Sometimes they really hit the mark and others feel like they were just throwing something against the wall to see what stuck. Like many groups, they were better together and their harmonies blend so well.

These videos on Peter and Gordon opened my eyes to their work. I have the original 45 of World Without Love. I bought back then as a high school kid. One of my favorite songs. It is amazing that McCartney was such a composer. His songs for this duo were top notch. One wonders if he was not far away when Peter and Gordon were recording. The songs you played -- even the bad one (If I Fell) -- sounded good to my ears. Yes, as someone mentions in the comments: A revisiting is necessary.

The Asher family were interesting. Paul McCartney and Peter Asher were roomates on and off for a couple years. Woman was written by Paul. They have a most atmospheric vocal sound.

I am surprised to learn that they made so many. Really fascinating to learn so much more about them. I am pleased I have subscribed to your site - have enjoyed your videos very much.

LOVE Peter and Gordon. They had a unique magic to them, but i think it was separate from the people that were around them and contributing. Even their self-penned stuff is top notch imo, but they had a unique ability to interpet others' songs. I Go To Pieces is still a haunting, heartbreaking track nearly 6 decades later.

Wow 🤩 I really dug that deep dive of yours into Peter & Gordon! Back in 1964 I heard "500 miles" and was instantly mesmerised. It's still the best version, I think. I also seem to share your love for some of their later albums like "Lady Godiver" and "Rusty Knight". Some of their liner notes are hilarious and should be cherished alongside those of the Kinks and Dean Martin😂 Thanks again Matt!

I noticed that on your photos of the single 45s that there were credits for the orchestral arrangements. These did not appear on the albums and I always wondered who was responsible for these lush productions ... maybe Richard Hughson who did The Bee Gees and She's Leaving Home. Some of these tracks are so BIG with orchestration. Lady Godiva and To Know Him are cooler production than anything coming out of New York or LA at this time. London took pop music seriously as art.
@56dinosaur2 жыл бұрын
Correction: Mike Leander did the arrangement for The Beatles' "She's Leaving Home"(though George Martin conducted it). Richard Hewson was the orchestral arrangeer/conductor on the ""Let It Be" album. Bill Shepherd was the orchestral Arranger/Conductor on the 1967-1972 Bee Gees records.

Matt, Of course I thoroughly enjoyed this. Peter & Gordon could be exhibit A of dumb record companies demanding product and the 'hip' late sixties mindset that singles bands should be thrown out with the dishwater. When Autumn Records was bought by Warner Brothers, they forced the Beau Brummels to record "Beau Brummels '66" which was all covers - and, yes 'Woman' was one of the covers. Labels would release albums with covers of hits expecting the public to be stupid enough to buy them for the 'hits.' '66 heloed torpedo the Beau Brummels career. Ten albums in four years helped kill P & G, so thanks for reminding me that there were some good songs on the P & G albums.

Great idea for a video, thank you. I knew a handful of these - Morning's Calling, If I Were You etc. And really glad you chose Black Brown and Gold. That's the great UK jazzman Tubby Hayes on the sax break by the way! But the rest were all new to me and deserve my further listening! Another favourite of mine is "The Colour Blue" from their third (I think) UK album. A real mod groover!

One song you didn't mention by Peter & Gordon was "You've Had Better Times". It is on The Best of Peter & Gordon CD by Rhino Records . It is a bit cheeky. The song starts out with studio talk and the intro on the piano is played with a wrong note. But, it is a very upbeat song for Peter & Gordon considering that they wrote it. If you can find it, take a listen. Enjoy your pod cast.

I agree with comments on "Tears Don't Stop." In addition to "I Go To Pieces" it was my favorite song on the album. Weird Wikipedia Trivia: After 911 Clear Channel requested that their 1,170 stations not play "I Go To Pieces" fearing it would upset people that lost loved ones in the World Trade Center. I find that strange, as the woman being sung about is very much alive and 'walking down the street.'
