I started talking theory with one of my guitar playing buddies the other day. He interrupted me and said, “you are going to ruin the mystery of music in my life”. What he fails to understand is; for every mystery solved, ten more appear. There is no end to learning and I’ll get a leg up any way I can.

I just love those gospel-influenced 12/8 blues changes. Once you start being able to navigate them, they really do inspire you (the soloist) to tell your own story of heartbreak and despair, mixed in with humor and hard-won wisdom, with a dash of hope for better times just around the corner. Art forms don’t get better than this.

Thank you so much for this lovely tribute to Peter Green. He fully deserves it. During Peter's periods of lucidity, he was the sweetest, most articulate, most spiritual bloke you can imagine. My compatriot Isaac Guillory(another brilliant guitarist who deserves greater recognition than he gets) introduced me to Peter in mid 1980s London. Again, thank you, Magister. Shalom.

Not knowing Theory, is like being Blind, you only have half of the story, some people can do it, but most great player have to know it to survive, as it may be the only job around at the time, if you can read music. You know where go and why you go there, what will fit, and what won't. Timing, is a must.

Decided on this one as I big fan of Peter rip. Giving my age away, I saw him several times in 60s also Christine Mcvies Revolver always in small local clubs/colleges. Once again you show a different side to your outstanding playing. So impressed I am downloading your advanced solo lesson so that I can take it back to Wales with me. Kind regards keep safe. Dennis

Have you ever watched John Mayer's long Instragram vids (on youtube)? When he gets going... he plays the blues by himself like you mention... but he hits chord stabs ... and then riffs. He has a wicked fire about the way he attacks the guitar those times. His phrasing is so vocal and the ways he approaches notes is like a slide player, with all the micro bends galore. Gets me so amped up watching those.

The pickup went in to the shop to be unpotted so it would sound like Clapton's. The tech mistakenly wound the wire backward. Peter wanted to try it like that . But, it sounded best with the poles facing to the inside. Everybody liked the Honk and how fat the Les Paul sounded so he kept the guitar in that set-up. Selmer Music London did the historic work.

Thanks! Both are great. The Bloomfield is a bit more Dumble like with a great od channel. More mid forward. The Signature is like the best Super reverb I have played. Hi, Steve- I'll give it a shot... On most chords Jeff is using F major pentatonic (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, or F G A C D), so a sub-set of F major (Ionian). It's probably better to think of these particular tones and how they each sound over the chords. Then over the Bb7 the key subtly changes (you might say to Eb), but the only change needed to these notes is to use Ab instead of A (the b3 of F instead of the 3 of F). This gives a Dorian pentatonic scale (1, 2, b3, 5, 6) if you want a name for it. (The Ab is the b7 in the Bb7 chord. This is why F minor pentatonic sounds better over the IV7 chord in blues, Bb7 here). I find it helpful to play the arpeggios first and then add tones to make it all hang together. Cheers.

Jeff next time just tell them you've been studying this stuff for 30 years. Also since chords are the building blocks of music. You should learn as much as u can about them. How are they built? What is a diatonic chord progression? What is a 3rd or a 5th & why do u stack them? lol Stuff like that. Confuse the hell out of them. Then if they keep coming back. You'll know that you may not be wasting ur time. lol
