The issue here is that there are no easy options, and doing nothing entails a disastrous status quo for Israel too. He also straw-manned her by implying that if she supported an invasion, that committed her to the view that Hezbolllah can be defeated through military violence alone (a facile non-sequitur). He was right to accuse her of misrepresenting him later when she then said he believed it could all be solved through diplomacy, but I think she said that because she was trying to work what he was actually advocating, and that never materialised. Hitchens does have some good on the ground journalistic insights about why the Palestinians were better off before Oslo (mobility and employment was far more flexible before there were semi-formalised borders, and there was far less Jewish-Palestinian violence). He also sees that (1) a two state solution with a militarized Palestine cannot work (especially post Oct 7 given the proximity between the West Bank and Jerusalem), but (2) it is close to impossible for a Palestinian government to accept a demilitarized state.

But I also believe that when you have a big news platform then you have a responsibility to vet your guests, to ensure suitability amongst other things. If you are referring to the Palestinians then unfortunately they chose badly when they picked their allies - they chose Arab neigbours who were not very good at fighting and they chose to cozy up with the USSR, again, not a great choice. Maybe they should have taken the 1948 UN agreement that was on offer and not tried to fight for full control when they didn't have the ability to win - but that ship has sailed now.

They exist in spite of their actions, not because of them.

What I find dismally disappointing is how Israel is not judged by its actions, and not even by its stated intent. They wish to drive the people out of Gaza and take it for themselves. They view every conflict as an opportunity to increase their territory. The unkind might say that they welcome conflict, because it gives them an opportunity to take more land. But that is not true - in the West Bank they take land without any conflict. Don't get me wrong. If Lebanon was strong and Israel was weak, and Lebanon had killed 40,000+ Israelis and was deliberately bombing all Israeli hospitals and universities, and if Lebanon did not care for civilian life and deliberately killed journalists and aid workers trying to do their jobs in Israel, and if my government supported Lebanon in this mission - then I would protest long and loud against the actions of Lebanon. For me it is not about whether the children who die are part of a "good race" or a "bad race" - it is about being outraged that children's lives are sacrificed for the greed and power of smugly self-satisfied, comfortably off middle class hypocrites. It is being outraged that after the holocaust we said, "never again", and then sold arms and leant political support to the people who are doing it again. Sure, it isn't on the same scale as the holocaust - but I'm not sure the people of Gaza would see much distinction.
