Peter Hitchens has said a second Scottish independence referendum is now inevitable and will break up the UK.
Speaking with talkRADIO’s Mike Graham, the columnist said: “I don’t think that it’s now possible for us to prevent a second referendum and I would be very surprised if that second referendum doesn’t vote to leave.”
“If you really want in the long term future to keep relations between England and Scotland good, then let them go if they want to,” he added.

The referendum (Which I didn't agree we should have had in the first place) can be broken down into smaller and smaller results until you go into towns then streets and which street voted remain and which street voted to leave, but ultimately it was set up as a "UK" referendum but loads of different areas (and at least 16.1 million people) were taken out of the EU against their wishes including Scotland N.I., and London.

How many countries are queuing up to rejoin the UK? Zero that's how many. Scotland wont be any different. Looking at the bile being spouted on here against Scotland and it's elected government why would it stay in the UK. Furthermore England keeps voting,Tory which the rest of us get lumbered with, infinitely the best reason to leave the union.

@@charlesdailly7835 I'll be expecting my check in the post repaying all my taxes that make their way to Scotland. You act like we hold you against your will, that we somehow oppress you, while at the same time you quite happily take the money that the rest of the UK gives you. You have more per head spent on you than any other country in the UK and still have the ungraciousness to complain about. Yet despite all this money your education system is a mess, your public services are a joke, and you still ask for more money while you complain. Nobody's asking you to say thank you, most of the UK doesn't care because you're part of the UK as well. But don't give us the finger with one hand while you hold out the other taking our money.

Scot here: my view is the SNP are using the perceived general dislike for the Tories and Brexit to “stir up hatred” (hope you get that reference) against England to push through independence. So essentially it’s all based on spur of the moment emotions. In his case he wants Wales to go as well so there will be no danger of the UK - or England - getting a Labour government. My breath was taken away by a letter in the 'Metro' before Brexit: 'Let's make Nigel Farage PM and see how the EU like that'. He then said that after divorcing Europe, 'England should have a referendum on 'dumping Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales out of the Union. We can't vote in their parliaments. Perhaps I should say something on the West Lothian question. Tony Blair gave referenda on devolution to the 'outer Celtic nations' in 1997. He hoped that this concession would prevent demands for actual independence. He never thought that devolution to the rest of the UK would spark off English nationalism on the grounds that it was unfair that the other three countries had MPs who could vote in Westminster but English MPs couldn't vote in the devolved administrations. Although this is true, it is historical accident. When England fully absorbed the other countries into the UK, it had to give them representation in Westminster and it didn't occur to Blair to rescind this. It may be unfair but it is not as unfair as Westminster overruling all the other administrations when they voted against Brexit. It's not as unfair as the situation in the former Stormont Parliament which did not have one man one vote. It was a Protestant parliament for a Protestant people, and Catholics were mostly disenfranchised. It's not as unfair as Westminster allowing Liverpool to flood a Welsh valley to make a reservoir in the 60s, expelling all the inhabitants. No Welsh MP voted in favour but Wales had only 60 seats in Westminster, making democratic representation a sham. Westminster has the power to close down the devolved parliaments and assemblies at any time. This makes the West Lothian question seem almost trivial. Yet it is a gripe with some merit. What's the solution? There are only two solutions - a federal system where all parliaments are equal and have veto powers or dissolution of the UK. I'd support either but I do think it's funny that Ukip supporters are prepared to destroy the UK itself just after making it independent of Europe. We hear that Brexit is the last hurrah of those who think we still have an empire, those who sing 'Wider still and wider may thy bounds be set'. I don't mind, but it's a bit ironic that imperialists have morphed into Little Englanders - very little Englanders indeed - narrower still and narrower. I also think that any future vote, should not just be a vote for Scots to decide if they wish to divorce us - the rest of The UK, should be able to also say if it wants to divorce them. It's a strange marriage, that only one side gets a say in splitting. Let them have the vote, and if they want to leave(which I still doubt will happen), let them go. Financially, they'd have a disaster on their hands - but if that's what the majority want, then so be it.

Andy, can you tell me exactly who used the term "once in a lifetime" and in what context? I'll be astonished if you can. As for the EU, I don't recall any of the members of that particular union state that one of its members couldn't have a vote to leave if its parliament voted for such a thing. The UK didn't need to beg the EU to have a referendum and in fact could have had one every year if that's what the UK Parliament voted for!! The problem with the UK as everyone knows is that Scotland isn't being treated as part of a union but as a colony of England. Unions in the true sense of the word break up every single day when one side believes it's had enough. Just have a look at the divorce figures to see examples of that. No side in any union has the right to refuse the other side "permission" to leave if it so wishes. Like it or not Scotland will become independent if that's what the Scottish people want. History has shown this time and again.

What he meant was the UK was a member if the EU, so it had the right to veto any attempt of EU membership for an indwpendwnt Scotland. Since brexit happened, the situation now is very different, and sure that if Scotland would bote to leave the UK, they would be welcomed by th EU.

@@m0shene _"What he meant was the UK was a member of the EU, so it had the right to veto any attempt of EU membership by an independent Scotland"_ : That's not what he said. What he said (and what the EU said) was if Scotland voted to end the UK in 2014 they would have to reapply to the EU as a new member state, which was a statement of *fact* . The SNP were fully prepared to lose EU membership in 2014 if it meant independence. Funny that. The veto threat was and remains from Spain, and Scotland does not fit the criteria for new membership & wouldn't for many years. It has no currency of its own and would be expected to make a future comittment to the Euro. Your comment, much like @Miserere Nobis, it absolute waffle.

A lot of twaddle being peddled here. Blair's Government didn't ever have the goal of breaking up the Union. The Scottish and Welsh Parliaments were created as a result of the Irish Peace Accords, part of which included an independant parliament for Northern Ireland. As they got one, the option had to be given to the other Union members. The Scots want an idependance vote because they disagreed with Brexit. Which means they favour EU membership over UK membership. Which tends to point to the fact that maybe England has misunderstood what the EU stands for all along. A trading bloc, not an assault on patriotism, as so many in the media like to portray it. And happiness? Maybe if we hadn't swallowed Reagan and Thatchers ideology that pure capitalism will bring you joy, then the English would be a bit more content. Measured capitalism, yes. Unchecked, unregulated capitalism? Well......Brexit and Trump? Neither of which seem to be going very well.

@@lennydale92 I didn't say England put Scotland in the UK Union. Those Royal dynasties were a mixture of Scots and English, with England being dominant. We all speak English, that alone speaks to an English dominance and English subjugation of Celtic language and culture. I never said Scotland wasn't involved in the Empire. It played a key role in the Empire. England swiped its and Wales resources also. Wales wants reparations re coal and fresh water reserves stolen. Plus look at the populations. That tells a story. England actively encouraged depopulation of Ireland and Scotland and Wales haven't faired well either. Scotland and Wales poorer than key areas of England means emigration, a small population and maintains English dominance. While England might not have planned this re Scotland and Wales, it never did anything to address the issue because this situation suits England. For example it gets to always vote in governments, given its population size and thus always decide the direction of the UK. It also means it can do things like store all its nuclear stuff that Scotland doesn't want or support in Scotland, far away from England. And now, it's England and it's territories, the UK Union. The Westminster Government taking away devolved powers, some Tories want to end devolution completely. Scotland joined the union, it can leave the union.
