Hopefully I can dispel a bit of the drama if I say that I intended to joke about the whole video being a mistake at the beginning, not the drawing I was looking at. I think some people misinterpreted my joke and are (perhaps with some reason) upset. Regardless it was still a joke at the artist's expense, but I still think it was funny. I guess I'm not apologizing for the joke, but just that so many people seem to think that it was a much harsher joke. I would never tell someone that their art was flatout awful or a mistake or bad, and from the artist's response on twitter, thankfully I don't think they took it as strongly as some people on here, they were just looking forward to seeing my reaction to some art which is obviously in a style at sharp contrast to my own, which is reasonable. Also sorry if there wasn't enough critique on some pieces for some people's liking. We'll see how the next video goes, and I'll try to more obviously label what I'm doing as a critique or a roast, this one was a bit of both in some places, which was kind of bad maybe :P Thanks everyone, I just wanted to make a comment to get this off my mind. To all of you that reacted strongly when you thought I was calling the drawing "a mistake," thank you, that's good.
@gildersleevee6 жыл бұрын
Good on you mate, I think it is a great thing to know your frame of mind that you had when you went over the art folks sent to you for your feelings on if you like it or not. To be honest that ONE critique is the only one of all them you did that seemed a bit out of place. That is probably why it got taken the wrong way. On a whole I thought your remarks were spot on and very kind at times. Do more of these it can help the artists that are sending their work to you for your ideas on what they did.

AND you're taking a break from looking at your own art work to look at other people's work, which shows humility and empathy. Do more!

IrritatedEmpath Oh I’m so glad that you’re doing well! Loved your bright and poppy style. It makes me happy to see everyone care about a stranger’s art so much that they’re writing large paragraphs and kindly worded notes towards you and criticizing Peter’s criticism in the fear that he went just a tad too close to a line of being rude. I feel Peter was joking, it was obviously not his kind of aesthetics, not the kind of thing he looks for in art or gets entertainment from. But again, glad people were thoughtful enough to jump to a stranger’s defense just in case.

Seeing your comment made me happy. As someone who growing up had a lot of people dismiss my art rather than critique it, it made me sad seeing Peter skip over it without actually saying anything constructive or even positive. I think you draw legs really well, and pastels are always great, your use of simple rounded shapes on the head and face is very pleasing to the eye. There's nothing wrong with grasping hold of a style or technique based on popular media or other's work that keeps your interest in creating early on, even if others don't like it. No matter where your art takes you, I hope you continue to create and grow as an artist! Much love to you!

Aw, whoever did 31:15 : I actually love the scribbliness of it all. What would normally be a rigid, sterile and impersonal environment instead looks chaotic, worn and personal if that makes any sense. I dig the contrast. And I don't think the erratic strokes, wobbly lines and not entirely filled in areas are a failing so much as a conscious decision. Or well, it's all shots in the dark here till the artist pipes up, but I felt pretty strongly about this one so that's out there now. Anyway, it's been kinda surreal to see how very in sync in some areas but how super different in others our tastes and opinions are. If you ever do one of these again, I'd be up for joining in.

Peter, just so you know, when you're on the ocean temperatures, currents, land features, and other things all affect the surface of the water and waves and sometimes the surfaces really do look they way the waves do in the drawing of the boats on the ocean. So the person may not have given up, they may have been depicting reality. You will see an area of choppy waves and an area of a calmer surface, especially in harbors and bays where freshwater rivers meet saltwater sea. Just thought you'd like to know.

Peter, I wish you wouldn't assume that these people are sloppy when they don't fill in a dark space, because I love to do that! I love the texture, and I have seen it a lot in art. I think it's a lot more interesting than flat black... I get that some people do get lazy with filling stuff in, but some of these artists obviously used a small fine liner to get texture and not just fill it in completely with one color.
@kd13306 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and that person could've used alchohol markers to make the streaks go away, but I understand that it might be difficult for some to get them. The streaks didnt make the drawing any less cool to me. In fact, I was really impressed. The artist may not have had much art supplies other than a pen and some markers, so to make such a cool drawing really inspires me
@peter_draws6 жыл бұрын
That's true, but I think this is why ultimately you have to be your own biggest critic. You're the only one that knows what you're doing, and what your goals and intentions with your art are. Getting outside criticism can be a mixed bag (anywhere from very helpful to totally useless) depending on how closely they understand what you're trying to do, and you just have to learn to take it with a grain of salt and temper their perspective with your own artistic vision.

I see all these people in the comments about the first one. While I do think he was harsh and I would hate to have him say that about my art. First of all he didn't say he might not be nice so submitting a piece into this you must be prepared for that response. Second. As an artist you must be ready for the world to hate your art. You have to hear someone say your art sucks and you have to move on if you want to be successful in the art world.

Actually trees don't really "decide" to split. Usually there is one main stem growing and from it there grow side branches and if those branches grow depend on different things like light exposure and if the shoot will survive the weather and fauna of the region. also if the main shoot/branch gets hurt/cut off, the tree will branch in two there. So it's mostly due to the environment and what happens to the tree in combination that the tree wants to grow as big and strong (and get much surface for sun exposure). I'm not a botanist, but that's about my understanding...

Peter, your critiques aren't mean, they are always constructive and it's easy to note when something just isn't your style or something that interests you, but that doesn't mean it goes without saying that your here to help inspire others and allow your own outlet for expression. I am happy to say that everyone posting content on your pages to be critiqued are all going to succeed in the art world if they just put their love and ambition into learning the right techniques to make their particular style really stand out and look finished and presentable. I've been drawing since very young ages and while I may have been on hiatus from drawing multiple times for quite long periods, just watching your channel has inspired me to try and focus on my art nearly full time, and while I don't think you'd be interested in all my art, I'd love to send some in for a critique sometime just to get another artists perspective. You're a legend Peter and keep always doing you. And everyone else, I hope you guys don't let yourselves get discouraged from making the art you love in the absolute best way you can. My biggest tip to any artist is understanding perspective, because whether on a 2d plane or a 3d space, understanding visual perspective is key because it allows you to basically create formulas to determine proper color/shading values and even the size and distance of shapes. Once you understand perspective, you can toy with it and make warped perspectives in a satisfying way, or interesting color contrast, etc. It's not necessarily fun learning these things, but it becomes fun the more you *understand* them, ultimately. Have fun. Always be aware of your strengths, and explore your weaknesses. Pay more attention to improving the weaknesses and it will all come together.❤ Also drawing at 47:20 of Peter was masterfully done. Good job to Ali Goodarzi!

Is Peter ok? He seems so down and negative lately? He just doesn't seem alright? I hope that he starts feeling better soon : < I feel really bad for all of the artists he was so unkind towards, it's so unlike him. He used to always says that what matters is that you enjoy making the art and not to worry about what others think. I have long looked up to him as an artist, but more importantly as a kind person and this is just so upsetting to see.

@ellieamanders79706 жыл бұрын
+Bradley Gonyea Clearly, the artists, who posted their art, wanted to see an insightful criticism from someone in a professional field (what could be improved, color palette and etc). And not for the sake of self-expression and hobby, which what his statement-of-art-expression is for.

That one with Adam and Eve was so cool, how the angel (in a true biblical style, with all the eyes) had the flaming sword and was half coloured, and was protecting the garden of eden, which was completely coloured, from Adam and Eve who were kicked out of the garden and now have no colour It’s so thematic and I love it
