When I met Peter Ruth it was 1976 and he had been plating 11 years and shared with me about Walter Horton. He shared with me his stage rig, Super Reverb on a chair and his home made wrist band & ring condenser mic set-up. He was opening with the large funk rock band "Sky King" (you can find them on You Tube- look for the red airplane on LP cover. They were opening for The Earl Scruggs Review, the famous banjo player - Bonnie & Clyde song "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" Beverly Hillbillies theme, etc. After the concert we went to a large party at a beach house, we were not into the drinking/smoking party scene so we ended up sitting on the seawall overlooking the Florida Bay and playing harps until about 3 in the morning for several hours. He helped show me how Charlie McCoy plays his fast runs and other cool things. I was into Bluegrass then and of course the usual blues players. Within 2 years practicing 4 hours per day I was able to go full-time pro. Madcat was VERY generous and nice with his sharing of harp knowledge.

I was thinking the other day about all the great resources that kids have now for learning how to play their chosen instrument compared to when I was a kid learning to play (guitar)in the 60s.Back then there really wasn't anything other than music books(if you could find a good one)all written in standard notation, but no tab.I remember trying to cop a Peter Green lick but didn't even have a tape recorder just a record player.I'd press down on top of the stylus (the cartridge that held the needle on the end of the arm)to slow the record down so I could make out all the notes! What a pain in the ass! Still if there's a will theres a way.If you really want to play you'll find a way to figure it out,but I sure wish we had some of the stuff they have now.

Yep- I snuck outta the house on Fri or Sat nites when my grandfather baby sitter fell asleep and hang out by the back of the wall where the band was playing just to cop that feel- 5th & 6th grade. 25 yrs later I sat in with that band I heard as a kid-

Ha! That's how I learned. A couple cats in Peoria and Chicago told me about cross harp and what key to use and that's it. I didn't even know about overblown until I moved to PA.
