Note with regards to Canada: The US trade deficit for the last 3 years has been about ~ $40 Billion per year NOT the 100, or the 200, or the 300, or the 350 Billion that depending on the day Trump has been claiming. Prior to this period of time the US trade deficit was closer to zero. Reason for the Trade deficit being $40 Billion was the relative large world price oil / gas last 3 to 4 years. Lastly, subtracting trade of oil and gas, US would have a large trade SURPLUS with Canada. Trump has also played on words. If I buy an apple off my neighbour, I am not 'subsidizing' or being 'abusing' my neighbour. If I buy 2 apples off my neighbour, I am not greatly 'subsidizing' or being greatly 'abused' by my neighbour. Given the logic /rhetoric I wonder what just stealing an apple off a neighbor means?? Ie if you steal an apple, I guess at least you would know that you weren't being abused by your neighbour. Trump has other goals , reasons for imposing tariffs, okay fine perhaps, but lay off the misleading rhetoric about the numbers and the language.

It has been clear from economists in Trump's orbit who have recently commented on this new policy, that Trump knows there will be short term price shocks but that they will be temporary and in the medium term, he is trying to encourage the repatriation of manufacturing and energy extraction back to the US. So we can stop ruminating about every comment or data point Trump trots out.. everyone knows he exaggerates stuff. But the core message that underpins his policy are clear: Come build your stuff in the US... we will lower taxes, lower regulation and you will be price competitive with your products... The implications for Canada are MASSIVE. Both Mexico and Canada will have to go through the long and perhaps painful process of re-tooling their economies. There will be many business casualties and job loss. Please understand that America doesn't care about that.

I couldn’t agree more. Trump is talking absolute nonsense that even a child can figure out. If you buy things that you need and you pay for them,as you should, how is that “subsidizing” the other party? Furthermore, as far as I know, we are buying oil from Canada at very attractive price plus it’s the kind of oil that most of our refineries are suited to process. Also, quite a large number of our states are dependent on trade with Canada and will be seriously affected by those tariffs.

You can bet if they had buyers overseas that would pay more for their tar sand oil, they would be building pipelines from east to west. The problem is, Canadian tar oil is expensive to refine, and I don't see any country wanting to buy this stuff and ship it across the ocean to refine when they can buy oil that is cheaper to refine from other places. Since nobody wants the oil, Canada sells it cheap to US refineries

However, if the USA with it's vast resources hasn't been able to stop the flow of these drugs through our country, how is Mexico with all it's problems going to? The government can only do so much to stop people taking drugs... These tariffs will come at significant cost diplomatically and economically with positive outcomes in doubt...

"Let's see what happens. "This is the wisdom from the Oval Office? And the argument that tariffs didn't impact the economy ? Ask my midwestern farmers' about that. Also, one of the main goals of the tariffs was to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US. How did that work out? The big picture gets lost in the tariff argument which is the unintended consequence and deliberate destruction of our country's number one export, the greenback. We've had trade deficits since the early 1970s and our economy still has the largest GDP in the world. Trade deficits are a reflection of wealth not poverty. When an economy goes into a recession, what happens to the trade balance ? But what happens when the economy expands and grows? The income rises and households have more money to consume so trade deficits rise. More than the trade deficits, the bigger issue was the lack of redistribution of profits. Examine the Gini Coefficient, which is a model of income equality, and you will see the problem. Trade deficits don't matter as much especially when you have foreign central banks that want to hold USD to stabilize their currency and you are home to the capital inflow center of the world, Silicon Valley. Why are we arguing about something that is yesterday's newspaper. We should be skating to where the puck is going not to where it is. Any success of the tariif plan has far greater geopolitical unintended consequences like eroding international standing and reducing our reserve currency comparative advantage. If you think financing the debt is a problem now, wait until central banks ' lower the amount of USD and treasuries they hold in their vaults. Also the objective of bringing back jobs is fanciful pipe dream. There may be reshoring, but with the emergence of AI and humanoid robots, the mass scale manufacturing will be done by robots not middle class Americans. Does anyone else feel like this an episode of the Office? "But let's see what happens."
