It seems that most everyone commenting has in the past listened to both Peter n Bob. I have for sure. If someone was to ask me who I liked better....I could not pick. Each singer/artist/writer/musician etc. In reggae music is my favorite at the precise moment I am listening to them. I do not compare them...i just listen. Enjoy the music.. enjoy the artist...enjoy yourself!

I think Marley was ahead because his voice was magnificent! And peter's voice was suitable to accompany Bob's, that's it! none of them was better than the other, they are the greatest artist of reggae and The wailers is my favourite band since i was 8!! i'm 20 now and the feeling hasn't disappeared!! Peter the ruler. We love all mankind. We love all players of instruments. They all had different ways of making and delivering the word of the most high. Like the disciples or apostles they all had different backgrounds different ways of out reach. We giv thanks to all. We only wanted them to mature much more before thier untimely death.

onlyjoetee, I agree with much of what you say. Bob had a special charisma that enabled him to reach out to people that other singers haven't got. However, and I guess this is a matter of opinion, but in my view Peter was a better musician and certainly a better singer. In fact I'd say artists like Peter, Toots Hibbert, Ken Boothe, Nicky Thomas and John Holt were better singers. Anyway, let's just be thankful that Jah gave us Peter & Bob.

The only problem with Peter Tosh was being stiff. He could not engage with the crowd as much as Bob Marley could. Either than that - Peter was the Best especially with him being the core contributor towrds many of well known *"The Wailers"* songs!

@nesianboy when Peter Tosh stands before the leaders,he lights a spliff and curse them, when Marley stands before the leaders,he tells them of love, and brings them onstage to hold hands for unity in the name of love, and even thunder and lightning flashed.See the difference?more creative, more powerful, greater,THIS is why he doesn get beat or go to jail,THIS is why he is promoted ahead of the rest,do you see???

@nesianboy Tosh left because he had to go do his own thing,it was time to develop his own talent. His touch up role was done much better after him by the 3 girls. The core of the Wailers was Bob and the Barrett brothers, thats reggaes greatest combination,Bob and that AMAZING drummer and bass player,Marley was VERY lucky to find them.Anyone else was dispensible quite frankly.Bob,Family man and Carly was the main thing..

@sonicsrasta I disagree, I think songs about how man should love each other have greater impact. But I totally love Tosh's message. Besides, why are we fighting between the differences of Marley and Tosh even though it is just our own opinion of what we think of their music. So one love, stop bickering, love all.

@nesianboy more "elements" does not mean your music is better.Marley could turn up with just himself and an acoustic guitar sit down, sing redemption song and blow you away completely with the sheer power of it.THATS greatness.

@nesianboy its the power of the song, that captivates.Bob Dylan could stand on stage by himself with just an acoustic guitar and captivate an entire stadium!!!!its the songs!!and Marley had the greater more powerful songs, from the very first album onwards,by FAR!!

@nesianboy look at the chords that Marley used for i shot the sheriff, google it right now,you will realize what a truly brilliant musician he was technically.and this was from THE FIRST album, this is young early Bob Marley, with no help from anyone, knowing chords LIKE THAT!!most early writers would use basic chords Marley uses Gm/Cm7/Ebmaj7/Dm7..for him to even KNOW chords like that at that stage was incredible!!never mind the bridge even!!

@nesianboy There are different levels in life in everything, average, mediocre, good and great, and you know it when you see it.in art, sport, music everything.peter tosh bunny wailer etc were good, bob marley was great and they knew it, they themselves KNEW it!!the world knew it,and i say this with the greatest respect as big peter tosh fan myself, because its the truth,if you look at both their creative output, you will see this CLEARLY,one was ahead of the other, overall, they were not on the same level

Your comment shows that you don't completely understand Tosh. His smoking herb on stage does not reflect him being any less committed to his craft than Marley. To Tosh, herb was a part of who he was, and was a spiritual thing that fueled the spirit of his performances, his writing, his religion, his life. You can agree or disagree with his choices, but you shouldn't equate that with his commitment. And the quality of the music he and his band presented on stage was as tight as anyone's.

Blackwell pushed Marley ahead because he looked white. Blackwell knew it would be easier to sell his records in America than Tosh's records. Let's just say Marley fit the description a lot more than Peter. Plain in simple. Luckily when the Stones saw Peter and Bob, they were blown away (not by Bob but by Peter). That's why they signed him. I'll go with the musical chops of the Stones any day over some of the posters below....

Marley had full weight of a label and an American PR team - Tosh didn't - Marley's look/ feel was much more accessible than Tosh's. That's it - plain and simple. Marley wrote about "One Love" while Peter wrote "there will be no peace until man has equal rights and justice." Until the day i die, i believe Tosh's passion, spirit and lyrics will have a longer lasting impact on culture/music - songs like Burial, 400 Yrs and Equal Rights will always trump Marley's "One Love" and "Stir it Up"

@nesianboy im not talking about record companies or sales,im talking about composition and creativity,go listen to redemption song, rat race, buffalo soldier,i shot the sherrif, exodus, burning and lootin, the heathen, rastaman chant, natural mystic, crazb baldheads, zion train, etc, study the chords the arrangement, for someone who was barely educated Marleys vocabulary was incredible.Peter Tosh is good, but he's not on his level, not as prolific, creative or powerful, there is a difference between good& great

@nesianboy Bob marley was a Rhythm guitarist, which is all you need to be to write songs, Cmajor and A minor are the same if you can play in on one instrument or a thousand instruments.unless you have a song,it doesnt matter how many damn instruments you play.and Marley had the songs..get it??

I maybe like Marley more than Tosh, but Tosh had an enormous impact on reggae as well as Marley. But what i don't like when it comes to Tosh is for example this performance. He performed fantastic as well as his band, but he was smoking weed on the stage, what you cant say for Marley. You wouldnt never see Marley smoking on stage, he was completely commited to what he was doing. That is important difference

I would disagree. I think Marley's song will have longer lasting impact. Tosh's songs are only about the present of which he was living in. Let's say everyone has equal rights now, ok. now what is the significance of that song? Whereas, everyone can always say One Love. Honestly you guys are just trying to find the differences in Marley and Tosh even though they both wanted the same thing. I think this is pointless bickering, it's an argument that will never be won.
