He's right about the sound effects. In particular the footstep which were so massive it gave the character this immense weight, both literally and metaphorically. It felt like there was two tons on legs.

@Retrobution
@Retrobution Жыл бұрын
what i like about the footstep sounds is that theres a lot more to it than just describing the weight. if you compare them to just the weight - such as sounds of the t rex footsteps in jurassic park like if it was just a thud or thump sound, you would think that sounds heavy and so your imagination does the rest... but there is a visual connection to it as well, the vibration of the glass or water in a puddle etc, just builds up the tension especially the expressions on characters faces and their reactions to the sound of the footsteps (confusing it to the power trying to come back on etc lol). So the next time you hear those t rex footsteps, or see a vibration, your mind automatically will take you to the t rex. With robocop there is no weight to his steps that cause a vibration, but the footstep sound - if you notice in the film - the characters stop shouting and arguing and then the sound of the footsteps is like the first thing they get to experience with robocop, all ears are on that and their eyes and expression is the focus then and its a particular thud thud sound that sounds clean - and not like a clang of metal, its almost like someone closing an expensive car door or something it just has that sweet thud sound with almost like a digitised drum on a synth mixed in giving it that futuristic quality to it its very noticable and so much so that every person in the precinct reception turns their head and listens to it, and then with that sound you see a glimpse of robocop for the first time. Immediately the first impression on peoples minds is that build up, then the sound, the reaction and then the visual connection. WIthout these things, you lack that full robocop experience. So for me the footsteps sound IS part of robocop and part of the performance, and I am so happy they include this in the new robocop rogue city game, when you first walk down the city street a drunk comments on the sound as well which is cool.

I met Peter Weller at a convention some years back- My friend and I had a vendors table and came in to set up before the event was opened to the public... Peter came in and chose the table right next to us to sign autographs. He talked with us, told us stories, treated us like we were friends of his. He's a really nice guy. When I was doing the vendors business with my friend Mike, I met a few other actors and so forth, but none quite as nice.

Did he mention any intention to reprise his Robocop role in possible Robocop 4? Since Robocop is half human half machine, it is possible that Murphy's human head would age like his colleagues. Peter Weller suits best.

My favourite film of all time. I've seen it countless times, yet it still never ceases to entertain me. The 2014 remake could have been so good, but was a total abortion. Rumours are there's a direct sequel to the original in the works. I'd like to see how that pans out, but I'll always have the original, and, to a lesser extent, Robocop 2. :)

This is such a generous piece of storytelling. There's not actually that much to the story: they couldn't get the suit to work, it was stressful to everyone, they got a mime in to help solve the problem. But Weller really draws it out and covers every angle, gets into people's heads and paints a picture of what it was like on set and in the discussions and ultimately he captures the era and offers wonderful, memorable insight. What a great guy.

When I was a kid watching robocop I was blown away by his performance, he was as far as I could see a real robot man. Very true about the suit. I've been the reverse-engineer on a Bruce Hansing set of armor. It took 3-4 times of cutting/removing and rebuilding parts of the suit to finally get it down to the point that the wearer can get into the suit in about 40 minutes. Every time my friend gets in that suit that fast and can move, it's always a major victory. Sadly it's typically worn at Comic-Con in July so the guy is dying, even though I've got 7 fans built into it. I can't express how hard it was to get it to that point so knowing what I do now about the original Hansing suit? Yeah, that thing would take HOURS to put on for the first time. I don't think Weller was ever exaggerating the time it took to put that first run suit on.

The Robocop suit was made by a company called Arms & Archery from Great Amwell, UK. I used to live in the next village and would get the train to school which went past their place. They always had the medieval tents pitched in their field (they primarily made chainmail and suits of armour for films or re-enactments). One day I decided to go and have a look round the place. I went in the front door to their office and there is Robocop stood their full scale. I got chatting to the guy and he was telling me that they made over 200 suits for the film. A lot got shot to bits during filming. He showed me a photo album with him and Peter Weller on various sets. They keep a couple which can be hired for events. Never got round to hiring one but it would have been cool knowing that you are wearing a 100% authentic Robocop suit.

The scene he didnt want to mention which he says is in the movie that was shot the first day he was in the suit I believe is when he catches the car keys. It was mentioned in one of the documentaries or commentaires that this was the first thing shot with the costume. Amazingly the scene took about 50 takes because the keys kept bouncing out of the rubber gloves!

I'm so glad the movement was changed from speedy fluid to the more slow and precise movement. The way I always see it is that Robo is a walking tank, slow, lumbering and heavy with all that Titanium inboard. Weller got it right, he got it spot on. And yes his analogy of the trapped beast is a great way to look at that. Such a wonderful film even now, it obsessed me when I was 14 years old and it still does even now.

Sergei Eisenstein's "Ivan the Terrible" is a masterpiece of figurative art. Paul Weller is a smart cookie and he understands that the reason why Robocop works so well is the same reason as Ivan. They don't give literal interpretations but stylistic, metaphorical interpretations. So many films these days are mired in unimaginative, leaden, literal narratives and I include many sci-fi and fantasy films in that. Robocop has balls and brains. Verhoeven knew his onions alright. Great movie.

Predator and Robocop are among my favorite "adult" sci-fi action films of the 80s (alongside Aliens and Terminator). The stories sound similar. The titular character having major issues with design, and the actor inside the suit having a near mental breakdown. Yet, they learned from the hard failures during production, and somehow created classics.

+Daniel Ryan That movie, as epic as it was, was really really gruesome. And to think the franchise was aimed at kids (cartoon spinoff, toys, nintendo games etc). It scarred me as a child. Dude gets shot the hell up on his first day, looses his wife and kid who were never really introduced.. the bleakest future imaginable... I showed the film to a former gf and the look on her face when the ED209 shot up the guy in the conference room... Still a great film though xD

Yes, wish Weller had worked more often the last 20 years, he's always giving you something authentic. re the description at the top, Moni Yakim was a mime, yes -- excellent and deeply trained-- but also he's been the head movement teacher at Juilliard for decades, taught some of the finest actors working to bring physicality into their work, to act with the body. There'll be a documentary about him at some point; some filmmakers started one. Wonderful talented man of the theatre.

This is a trip. I helped build the suits for about eight years. And I never really heard a lot of this. Certainly not in this much detail. The first thing I noticed was I drew a caricatures of this guy in the wheelchair for a bad movie called Meet the Spartans .I think his name is Harry from ain’t it cool news. He was really popular for a while online. Looking at him here looks like he’s probably dead by now. I’m so glad it happened because the first movie is so brilliant. We definitely got suits little better in the second movie. They were made out of fiberglass, instead of the heavy, neoprene rubber. The second film suits look very beautiful coming out of the box, but they don’t look nearly as good on the screen. They were too perfect and two blue. The original suits were very green and under fluorescent lights. They tended to look like grey metal.
