Why Lewis Hamilton's BIGGEST PROBLEM is George Russell with @Peter Windsor | The F1 Hour
In this interview with the legend that is Peter Windsor, we talk all things F1 from Mercedes F1 decision making in having George Russ0ell in the same team as Lewis Hamilton and is there trouble down the road if they can build a championship winning car for 2023, Charles LeClerc vs Ferrari and how Peter Windsor would solve Ferrari F1's problems if he were Ferrari team principal, are we on the cusp of a Red Bull era and what is the main driver behind Red Bull's success this year, the car or the driver and were the FIA right to end Monza GP under safety car after what happened in Abu Dhabi last year where Lewis Hamilton asserted the outcome of the final Grand Prix had been manipulated.
It was an honour and a privilege to speak with the championship winning Race and Test Team manager, broadcaster and award winning writer, who was super generous with his time. Once again thank you sir!

Lewis is definitely still talented, hungry and motivated enough to win another title. Other drivers his age have got family and wives to think about. Lewis is still focused on his F1 goals. If he gets a car capable of beating Adrian Newey though is another thing. Ground effect is his world, everyone else is playing catch up on what he learned years ago.

Abu dahbi wasn't right but how did lewis get back in the championship by almost killing max at Silverstone and cheating for 3 races with a bigger DRS wing but that will be conveniently forgotten .

Usually. He jumped the gun in giving his opinion on Piastri, which was wrong. And the way the Abu Dhabi 2021 played out has made him a bit delusional and disillusioned at times. But yeah, he’s absolutely incredible.
@Wuppie62
@Wuppie62 Жыл бұрын
@@blakebarone1809 Windsor is a Lewis fan and British in the first place, so it's logical he has a problem with the disappointment Lewis didn't win race #22 and didn't win an 8th WDC. He ignores that most teams themselves agreed beforehand that the last thing they want is to finish a race behind an SC. The 2022 race in Monza only confirms this, because nobody was enthusiastic about ending the race this way (except Windsor and Toto, who both abuse this to 'make their point' about 'Abu Dhabi'..). Lewis made a mistake in turn 5 of the last lap of the last race, not defending it, at the same moment where Max made zero mistakes: overtaking and then defending twice against a faster Mercedes. Overall Max was the well deserved champion of 2021, beating Lewis in many ways: Most victories Most racepoints Most podiums Most poles Most sprintrace victories Most sprintrace points Most fastest laps Most laps led All this despite having 3 DNF's, a bowling Bottas, Lewis gaining advantages by two red flags and Mercedes-AMG using 11 engine swaps. Focussing solely on race #22 and ignoring all the mishaps in the other 21 races of 2021, is just cherry-picking and a sign of cognitive dissonance.

@@blakebarone1809 they broke the rules which led to a “racing finish” as max fans call it which was in reality a man who was faster all race being on 50 lap old hards vs fresh softs. The equivalent of tying both his hands behind his back and saying it’s a fair fight. Peter is 100% right and fair, the irony of you calling him delusional lol.
@Wuppie62
@Wuppie62 Жыл бұрын
@@rondo_with_it5946 Since when are vsc's and sc's meant to be 'fair' on all drivers and have zero influence on a race's outcome? It's part of racing that things can suddenly get shaken up by an incident and by the teams responses. Monza recently proved this: most F1 fans would have liked to see Leclerc e.a. race one more time against Max under a green flag. Except Toto..so he says... If you want racing and the WDC title to be 'fair', you shouldn't just cherry-pick on race #22, but also look at all the 'fair' and 'unfair' incidents and (dis)advantages drivers encountered in the other 21 races as well. I think Lewis had encountered more and bigger advantages throughout all the 22 races combined than Max. The 1 position Lewis happen to lose because of the SC in Abu Dhabi is of minor impact on the whole compared to the advantages he enjoyed and the disadvantages Max experienced. So all in al to me Max is the most deserved title winner of the 2021 season.

2005? Year you were born or something? He shouldn’t have let the lapped cars unlap - which means your Max wouldn’t have won. Still think he shouldn’t have let them unlap? Merc didn’t box Lewis because they didn’t need to, he was 25 seconds ahead on hards. They could have boxed him after all the commotion and lost track position… given Max had already tried to run him off the track multiple times in the few races prior, and including Abu Dhabi, they were not going to do that given a DNF benefitted RB and not Merc. In my opinion, both were worthy WDC so you can’t deny Max, or Lewis, deserved it. But that was an appalling way to end ANY season.

Yes, yes, Peter.. we know that Lew is was on the wrong tire… on the other hand we collectively tend to forget that HE was dictating the restart, HE was in charge and could have stayed in charge for at least 2 more corners. A real advantage RB have is a Second Driver who knows his job. Do some of the run testing for the team during practice and support the Number One! Ferrari have really got a sticky problem with two drivers approx the same age who both wish to be #1. As much as I love Lewis, I think having George is best for Mercedes as a whole. The team always had drivers that were capable of fighting for championships when they had winning cars. Lewis has been there most successful driver but George could possibly be their future. Lewis is still the better driver but George will be their future championship contending driver after Lewis leaves. The team literally has two alpha drivers and it’s the best thing for them as a team because they will deliver the maximum points always. As a F1 team that’s what’s most important. You can’t have one driver scoring points consistently and the other one 10 places away from him like the McLaren duo.

Most team's that have ever had two top drivers drop points to each other or take each other out in worst case. But also slow each other down by racing themselves also can lose them time. Dude is obviously very intelligent and in tune with what we all see happening race to race. And, confirms my position regarding the theft of an 8th and record breaking title from SLH. He is absolutely correct in his position on how this last weekend’s race was finished and why it happened that way based upon the trainwreck that was in Abu Dubai last season. You can never please everyone at all times, so I am sure there are many Maxifans that would argue that both were handled properly since they were the direct benefactors of the decisions that had been made. Anyway, I can feel my blood pressure rising so I will let it go and tell you a heart felt thank you for sharing this discussion with us mere mortal F1 fans. The issue with saying what happened last year was a robbery is that you have to close the scope down to the final laps of final race. Both drivers were in the wrong at multiple points throughout the season. No one got robbed of anything. Lewis was in the fight bc of a cheeky little send it in GB. I’m not saying max deserved the title, but neither did Lewis. Simply by way of the fact they went into the final race basically heads up it couldn’t have been a robbery. You don’t have to agree with what happened, but that doesn’t make it a robbery, it makes it a tough call. Same as you could say Lewis was hurt by the stewards at the end, At the start of that same race Lewis was given a gift by the same stewards. It was a shit show on the whole of the year last year from the FIA.

@@chriscollins550 see this is why it’s hard to make points and why people get frustrated with SLH fans. Every driver has moments where they find themselves in the wrong. It’s the realities of racing that fast in cars that can stand hardly any contact. But even when you come to issues that are blatant, his fans will make no concessions. Lewis straight up sent it up the inside in one of the most dangerous corners in the sport bc he knew losing that race would have been nearly detrimental to his campaign considering the run max was on and how much he was starting to eek out. Same as Max in Monza. And Lewis left the door wide open at Abu Dhabi inviting a move, max made it and Lewis scrambled to try and stay with him. But knew he couldn’t connect with Max. He was very aggressive in his move yes, but he kept it on the track, which made it a legal move by the FIA standards. Max is very aware of the limits of the rule book and is one of the best at stretching them to their absolute limits, some days, when riding that line you go over and have incidents like Monza, but neither Silverstone or Abu Dhabi were on max. Plus Lewis gained a big advantage on top of not having to give the place back in Abu Dhabi by completely skipping the corner

@@CameronF1. Keep up the incredible work Cameron :) here's a random story about a very special day i had recently, it's quite long so I apologise 😂 I was eating in Maranello the night after the Monza Grand Prix. Leclerc was in Maranello the same day, I had seen his Ferrari drive in and out of the Ferrari F1 factory 3 times. From my hotel window, I saw him signing items and posing for photos with fans, but I never saw him properly or met him that day, but I was happy with seeing it all unfold from a distance. I heard him driving a 3 seater v8 Ferrari around the Ferrari test track and, I was extremely happy. Then, in the evening, as I left to walk to the restaurant, I heard a cheer from the Ferrari gates, l I ran over, and there he was, for the first time up close, I saw my hero, Charles Leclerc, he was once again greeting fans at the gates, before going back inside, I watched from a short distance because he already had a lot of people around him, I was delighted to experience just that moment and my day was complete. But, later on, In the restaurant, I had just started to eat, when I got nudged and someone said "he's here", and I looked up and saw Charles and his girlfriend casually stroll in, he gave a wave to us all in greeting as he passed and entered a private room in the back to enjoy his dinner. 5 minutes later he emerged to go outside to take a phone call, and everyone in the restaurant looked at each other in silent shock, the energy was electric, everyone was buzzing. He walked back in from the phone call and greeted us again before entering the kitchen. I went outside at this point and saw his personal Ferrari outside it was incredible. I couldn't believe he was actually there. Later, when Charles was leaving he came out and shook hands with some fans, before beginning to sign stuff and take selfies. He saw my Charles Leclerc ferrari cap and reached for it over a small crowd, saying something I can't remember for the life of me now but, he signed it and handed it back and I was in disbelief. I met my hero and it reminded me exactly why I love this sport and why I want to see him succeed. It made me realise the feeling that all of us fans feel for our favourite drivers, that passion, the feeling of being proud and nervous on their behalf. This sport gives such an incredible feeling and, I wanted to share this with you now, because your videos feel like discussing F1 with a friend and I wanted to tell you about this meeting :) it was the best day of my life honestly and, it just made every aspect of life feel that little bit sweeter, I met my biggest hero and inspiration and it meant everything to me, and at age 19, I met him in a time that I felt I needed to. It's a very special feeling.

I think Abu Dhabi was a correction for a comparable thing that happened here at Monza. Abu Dhabi could have restarted with all cars unlapped if the decision would have come a little bit faster but some things didn't go smoothly on the organisation's end while the safety situation was solved so it's possible Masi might have reacted to fixing internal errors or political pressures from messing with the integrity of the championship although public opinion has shifted the other way and the nda's were signed so we won't know what happened behind the scene. I think the goal should still be having fast and clear get back to racing race control goals if its safe and probably more efficient and streamlined action when an accident happens on track. Fia/f1 should probably invest a bit more in training local marshals and making sure communication is lighting fast and efficient or race day. I think the discussions about how to finish races at the moment are less important than making sure it feels like it's done safe but also without wasting unnecessary time to restart leaving the viewers wondering what's going on. In AB it seemed like it was internal politics holding up the unlapping of cars. In Monza it was the slow deployment of the crane followed by the rather epic mess up from the safety car otherwise we could have had a few racing laps?

the whole AD21 "spectacle" since that was the "deal" they made before the race, could easily be achieved with a simple red flag. Lewis then would have new softs on, and race fair and square for few laps to probably one of the best last race fights of ever, and write history regardless of the winner. all they managed was actual race fans being disgusted with a fix and have zero faith in FIA. Also Lewis getting his 8th under safety car with the race he drove that day, would still be an incredible outcome for the fans and the sport.

Lewis trick? So Lewis made max turn in twice on him? Max was also apportioned blame on that RACING incident… which is what it was. How you can watch Max’s onboard and come out with “Lewis trick” is beyond me. Max had a plenty healthy lead with 4 races to go. Lewis beat him straight up. No tricks. No divebombs. No running him off track. Max on the other hand…was desperate. He was soundly beaten on championship Sunday and was gifted a title. Period. The amount of mental gymnastics max fans have to do to avoid the truth is baffling.
@ThinlaneT

@@gotemlookin20 Max was in front, Lewis hit him on the tyre instead of the sidepod/front wheel if he was truly next to him. Wolff and companions are smart enough to do that kind of action middle in the season instead of at the end, when everyone is on it an screams the race was fixed etc. Same like Brazil where they squashed everything out of 1 engine, including a flex rear wing for one race. Lewis had the upperhand the last races, so easy on the maths when you can grab a guaranteed win. I’m baffled that Uk media still vomiting up the whole thing, almost each race, each weekend. Deal with the past, Max got lucky with the last-lap shoutout in AbuDhabi, Mercedes let his highness Lewis in the cold/letting him down not pitting him for softs. It was given the race would be restarted anyway. Can’t blame RedBull for taking their chances what Mercedes put up for grabs. 2022 season again the tricks by Mercedes to slow down the competition by rideheight, but unsuccessful.

@@ThinlaneT you max fans really truly are delusional. It’s like you practice what you’re going to say. Max divebombed (as usual) which is why he was in front at that point. Lewis was fully alongside upon arriving to the turn in point of the corner. It doesn’t matter anyway. If Lewis is in front or behind he will always be wrong. Max can do whatever he wants it will be Lewis fault with the max fans. For example lewis was ahead at monza…”he should have left space”. Was ahead at Brazil when max ran him off track. “Just hard racing”. Max break checks Lewis with data to prove it. “Lewis should have passed. Why did he slow down”. Lewis avoids max at AD bc any contact can ruin his championship. “Max stayed inside the white line.” Yea barely but there was no room for another car. Lewis was ahead going into that corner as well. All max did was race him dirty ALL YEAR. In the sprint race at silverstone max was over aggressive. So in the actual race when Lewis dummies him and got alongside. He was taking that corner! You can’t let someone race you with no respect. Lewis beat max in the last 4 races straight up while max used dirty tactics as usual. No one knew if the race was going to be restarted at AD. Which is exactly what Lewis engineer was talking to him about. Did you even watch the race or do you just listen to the other max fans? If the race was guaranteed to restart they would have pitted for softs. It doesn’t matter tho. The fix was in. Had they pitted Lewis the race would have ended under SC and Mercedes’ would have handed max the title. They could not do that. Horner and redbull told masi exactly what they needed him to do and he did exactly what they said. Including using the same exact wording from them lol. I know you guys think max is so great and he is great, but how you can be so blinded from the truth is beyond me. Max is too tho so maybe that’s why the orange fans are so oblivious…

With the greatest respect for Peter, I’m a huge fan of his, but the rules have changed since Abu Dhabi. Massi did have the liberty to use his best judgement back then, and the teams themselves had expressed their preference towards races not ending under safety car. Also, Abu Dhabi’s ending wasn’t the only debatable decision in that season, even in that race. If somebody dares to bring that up it’s called old cows but Silverstone for instance had at least, if not more, influence on the end result of the championship

@@TheLemps2012 I don't understand why you would choose to be disappointed with his assessment of Max. Does Max not enjoy the benefit of not having to compete against his own team mate whilst driving the fastest car on the grid? Can you say the same thing about Lewis by way of GR63 or Nico Rosberg? I would argue Lewis not earned the right more so than any other driver on the grid to have #1 status until he retires. The same people who would hypocritically point that Lewis only had his team mate to race against are the same people perfectly fine with the 1-2 driver status at Red Bull. Peter Windsor is as straight as an arrow. What you read as Lewis and British driver bias is perhaps nothing more than a reflection of your own insecurities. He has given Max praise when he has earned it, as he has done with any other driver and he has critiqued then equally and accordingly. In case you haven't been paying much attention, his channel is not for the casuals and he tries to stay clear of these aimless and clearly stupid fan debates. He focuses more on the sport for the love of it and he has been around longer than most so I'd love to think he knows a ton than many of us do. I listened to his Abu Dhabi take and he tried as much as possible to stay clear of saying anything because of people like you. Infact, this is the first I am hearing of what he really thought and it echoes what every real fan of the sport has been saying (asides ofcourse the Anti-Lewis Brigade).

So much so that in 14/15 they had to purposefully turn DOWN the engine to not politically damage F1. Perhaps your bias and triggers need to be toned down. The Vettel part is what i ve been thinking about his driving, good but not great in every car or situation. Hamilton situation is his biggest challenge as yet cause after all that happend is easy to lose it rapidly in any moment, i just imagine myself in it and i would have been very angry all the time and for him to be this calm and collected is just incredible to see. What hamilton is doing this year is formidable, i hope he can beat russell at the end of this year to give himself more positives and come back next year even stronger. He has been the better Merc driver in race pace but hasnt been as consistent as russell or as lucky, which is not good. George for me is a better raw talent than Rosberg himself so Hamilton needs to be perfect in every aspect to not give more power to Russell, he wont give an inch to Lewis, he came here to replace him and beat him, like Lecrerc did with Vettel, but Hamilton is not a Vettel, he is more than that.

Continuing along the same vein, Sir Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes AMG really doesn't need all the aggravation that also comes with the super technology in the F1 Grand Prix Circus and vertically challenged 41 year old tilter at windmills: Fernando 'Don Quixote' Alonso Diaz. Although he competes mostly with himself in the rarified atmosphere of F1, Hamilton nevertheless has other specialized statistics to match himself against. An immortal of the historic F1 Grid: Scot Jim Clark jnr., who was sadly taken from the sport way before his time, is however, still the No.1 hero in the eyes of many F1 racing aficinados. Sir Lewis is only second to Jim Clark jnr. with 6xF1 GP 'GRAND SLAMS' to the 8xF1 GP 'GRAND SLAMS' of the truly gifted (1960's) 2xF1 GP WDC title holder and USA Indianapolis 500 winner with: A. F1 GP race victory; B. F1 GP pole position; C. F1 GP leading the race from start-to-finish; D. F1 GP fastest lap of the race.

I agree, should have let Russell go to Red Bull or Ferrari. Then when Lewis retires Mercedes are left with nothing. George is the future of Mercedes, he might even be the futre of Red Bull seeing that it seems Max doesn't want to stay around long-term.

As someone who has watched every televised session of every F1 race for the last 35 years I'd never argue facts with Peter, that man knows his F1. This is an opinion though, so I feel more comfortable pointing out that young Russell is beating Lewis in the championship this year. Okay, so MB tried all their "fixes" for the porpoising on Lewis' car in the first half of the season, and presumably just set George's car up to be a bit slower... But you don't get to be 4th in the championship in a car that isn't working properly and ahead of statistically the greatest ever by being superfluous.

I hear you sir. Very very strong points. Here's the dilemma though. To save a dying puppy, you need to secure a driver's championship. You already have Lewis Hamilton in one seat, of the current crop, who you putting in the second?
@dansmith6909
@dansmith6909 Жыл бұрын
Well, clearly Mercedes' thinking on this was to secure a top driver of the future, one who was getting frustrated with his Williams seat. I think George would have signed for another big team had MB not signed him up for this season. Lewis won't be around forever, sadly. It's always been this way in F1. Vettel coming along effectively finished Mark Webber's stellar career. Daniel Ricciardo and Max coming up effectively finished Vettel's run at the top. Ferrari got rid of Michael Schumacher in favour of Kimi Raikkonen, then some years later, pushed Raikkonen out for Alonso. Personally, with Carlos Sainz signing for Ferrari I think I would have put Pierre Gasly in that seat had George not been the obvious golden boy MB hope will replace Lewis. Gasly a solid F1 driver these days, someone who I think would win if possible, but also someone Lewis can probably beat at this stage in their careers.

I tend to disagree with the comment about Lewis keeping his emotions in check since Abu Dhabi. It's all but. It's definitely better than what it was in the beginning of the year, but go and listen to the analysis I've done on the words he use during interviews. And you will notice how the words he used, were a direct correlation with how they struggled. The way we process information in our brains, comes out in the language we use. The neuroscience is fascinating. Lewis still has a long way to go. It's much better, but definitely not where it should be for optimal performance.
