3 FREE MUST DO Activities in Waitomo, NEW ZEALAND | NZ Travel Vlog 1 of 3

It's road trip time again! This is a 3 part series from Waitomo to New Plymouth in the Taranaki region of New Zealand. In this first vlog, we're in the Waitomo District which is most famous for its glow worm caves however on this trip we visited three hidden free attractions in the Waitomo area - after grabbing some lunch first! 🙂
It was a 2 hour + drive from Auckland to Waitomo. We had lunch at Huhu Cafe which was very tasty and satisfying. It was definitely a great start to our time in Waitomo before we headed out to do our activities.
Huhu Cafe
Address: 10 Waitomo Caves Road, Waitomo 3943
Hours: Mon-Sun 12-8pm
The 3 free activities/attractions were:
1. Mangapohue Natural Bridge
The entire way leading up to the Natural Bridge felt like a magical hidden gem. An enchanting natural wonder. We did the walking loop through the farmlands too but if you just want to see the Mangapohue Natural Bridge, that alone is definitely worth the visit. The natural bridge is the remnants of an ancient limestone cave system. Getting to the base of the viewing platform is wheelchair friendly so anyone can enjoy this captivating unique part of New Zealand. Apparently at night you can see glow worms!
2. Marokopa Falls
A fierce and ferocious waterfall made even more spectacular by a beautiful little rainbow off on its side when we visited that day. Marokopa Falls is a short scenic drive from Waitomo Caves. After a nice short stroll through a native forest you get an incredible dramatic view of this secret hidden waterfall. There's a viewing platform to soak in and appreciate the beauty of this truly magnificent NZ waterfall.
3. Piripiri Cave Walk
Go prepared with a torch (flash light) or your mobile phone torch light when visiting Piripiri Cave. Piripiri Cave is one of the few free caves open to the general public in the Waitomo area. Most of the Waitomo caves are paid attractions with a variety of activities you can do inside them. However Piripiri Cave simply requires a short bush walk followed by a staircase down to the bottom viewing platform where you get to marvel at the size and formations inside the cave. Be careful though, it can be a bit slippery so watch your footing!
These 3 free Waitomo attractions are all in very close driving proximity to each other too which makes it a great sightseeing day of low effort and high reward activities that can be enjoyed by solo travelers and families alike.
Our accommodation for the night was in Otorohanga - Chris and Dave's B&B. We met Chris who was a warm, friendly and welcoming host. Their B&B was very clean, comfy and cosy with ample parking space inside their property. We booked their place via Booking.com.

Amazing! Really appreciate you guys showcasing our natural backyard and giving it that magical and awesome wow factor! Pity most Waitomo tourist attractions closed down during lockdown.. The village went from 3/5000 visitors a day too maybe 50/100 people.. Its the busiest time of the year NOW and theres barely anyone there.. Another 20+ minutes from Marokopa falls is Marokopa Beach village, My stomping grounds. THANKS for making the journey. Have a staff trip always..

The pandemic has hit so many places super hard ay ☹️ Hopefully domestic tourism can help a bit and maybe businesses can make some specials so it'll be a better situation for all since many regular folks have been impacted financially too. It's such a tough period! Marokopa beach village looks like a lovely idyllic spot. Must be extra nice in summer ay ❤️ Thank you and take care! 🌻

Hmmm.. maybe “enchanted?” Was going to say magical, but Peter has dibs on that word. Glad you guys found the path back to the car... 25-35 million year oyster fossils would have been cool to see, but much cooler to see this vid...and if you guys never found the path back to the car, we’d still all be waiting here for our weekly NZ vid:) ...and with that, time to get ready for some 🇰🇷🧟‍♂️! Great vid guys!! My update:😭😭😭😭😭

Hahaha hope you do Dina!! ❤️❤️ Waitomo activities can be pretty pricey normally so we thought it would be good to share some cool free activities which are no less beautiful 🙂❤️ If you do go to Mangapohue Natural Bridge, we just learnt today that apparently at night if you're lucky you can see glow worms there! So hope you get to see that since we missed out 😅😅 If you do wanna do any paid activities, black water rafting is pretty unique and fun 🙂👍 like in Peter's photo, you basically get a fruit loop looking tube and go around in the caves lol 😆

Hey Peter and Yen!! So great to see you guys again. That's awesome you're going to a place that Peter has been to before. Yen's Fried chicken and Peter's 1/2 chicken looked bomb!! Chicken is our favorite! We would love this. Cool that someone from your community suggested to go to the Natural Bridge. It really does look magical. That is definitely tall. Love seeing the farmland and the view. Sucks you didn't find your fossil'd oysters. The waterfalls... is a perfect touch to this trip. We love visiting waterways and waterfalls. So awesome all of these events are close to each other and FREE!! We love FREE adventure days. The caves were cool, and your Bnb is nice and open, and a good price!! Thanks for taking us with you and lots of love to you guys!! Fun adventure!!

@PeterandYen 3 жыл бұрын
Hiya Xin Yi! 👋🙂 aww nice awesome that you're going to New Plymouth!! We went to Lake Mangamahoe as well that Mandy recommended. Super pretty if you get a clear day 😍 the tip in our video next week is that when you get to the car park that looks out to Mt Taranaki, after you enjoy those views, get back in your car and keep driving on to the next carpark and do the short 5 min walk to get to a beautiful look out point! There's a tree stump chair too that you can sit on and soak the view in 😁💕 The other activities we did were climbing up Paritutu Rock if you're up for some adventure (first part is stairs but then there last section you essentially rock climb with the aid of a chain). Take it slow and be careful, let people come down before you go up and you'll be sweet. Epic view at the top 🙂 We also visited Pukekura Park and Te Rewa Rewa bridge. If you don't like gardens you can skip the park but if you do it's nice for a stroll (there's also a tea house there) and if the lake water is high enough you can rent a lil row boat from there. Unfortunately for us it was too low so we couldn't do it! Te Rewa Rewa bridge is a pretty cool design. Good short visit plus you can do a longer walk there if you like (we just went to take photos and do a slow mo walk 😂). Hope that helps give you some ideas and that you'll get beautiful clear weather for a gorgeous view of the mountain! 😍🍀🤞🙂
