The S&G original version was like a "warning of what may come", Disturbed's version is more of a "this has happened and we need to be alarmed" David has bad acid reflux, so he doesn't drink, smoke and he has a strict diet and times when he can and cannot eat.

He was really sick during this live performance...fever, congestion etc. Was sitting because he was too sick to stand and do the performance. People have said that Simon and Garfunkel's version was the warning, and this song is the anger because no one listened. David brings this song to such emotional intensity. Love your analysis of this performance....have learned so much about singing from your professional review. Thanks!

Another vocal coach/reactor mentioned that the guy from Creed talked about a tip to keep from hurting your voice with distortion. I'm not a singer, so I hope I can closely repeat what she was saying. In this performance you can see the artist make a growl face (squinted eyes & scrunched nose). Supposedly, that face helps reposition the voice and lifts some weight off the vocal folds. I hope that makes sense, even better if it's actually true.

You might considder checking the version henk poort did for floor jansen on the dutch tv show ' beste zangers' henk is an opera tenor singer and goes totaly out of his comfortzone to add growling or grid to it like david did. Ofcourse he is no david d. But nevertheless it is outstanding.

Yes, I agree. Floor was evidently very fond of David's version with Disturbed, so Henk decided to sing this arrangement for her on the week when the Dutch Beste Zangers 2019 TV show featured songs dedicated to Floor. iirc, the producer decided to put an Auto-tune over David's head. I believe the surprised look he gave to someone at the "my old frienddd" vibrato is because he realized there was Auto-tune despite the fact that he didn't want it.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, Disturbed does not use autotune, ever! Draiman was really upset when he found out his performance on Conan had been autotuned! Yeah, I'd heard he was quite angry about it being there, at all. And yet? I only heard it a couple of times, and only used barely. I'm not sure if his performance would have been as solid without it honestly. But as Peter pointed out, it's just stunning to hear the amount of control over his sound in this for him having a triple digit fever.

This was a fantastic performance by this metal artist. I think he trained as a Cantor. It is so complex. It sounds so different from the fast, folk style song sung by Simon and Garfunkel in 1964, and different from the Pentatonix version. You, as a professionally trained opera singer, hear very differently than I do, and have the language to describe it. Very educational. Thanks. This viewing on Conan has 139 million views. I think I have watched it 10 times.

There is actually another person who can perform life whilst sick, Floor Jansen from Nightwish. She was sick during a tour in South America, but still managed to belt out the high notes of Ghost Love Score. ( if you are not familiar with this number, look up the “Wacken 2013 rendition”) Again another (symphonic)metal band. These people just know how to sing! My dream duet ( probably never going to happen) is David Draiman with Floor Jansen, 2 power vocalists.

Thanks Peter! I’d love to see you react to Australia’s legendary Voice, John Farnham (Elisabeth has also looked at a couple of his songs and swooned 😜). Always do his live versions, never his recorded performances, and if you want a hot tip, start with his performances with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - notably his cover of the Beatles “Help” and “You’re the Voice”. If you enjoy his stuff, he’s known as the man who can sing anything, and even dabbles with opera ‘just for fun’ sometimes and freakin’ nails it! And no matter how much he moves, he hits nearly every note with perfection. See what you make of him 🙂

David is an absolutely phenomenal performer and human being. All of Disturbed is! I was lucky enough to see them in concert about a month ago, and it was an experience I'll never forget. If you ever get the chance to go to see them live, please do, it will be something you've never experienced before. My one gripe for this performance is that they autotuned him a few times. It's barely noticeable, but I can hear it on a couple of transitions. Even sick as he was, he didn't need the help. He sounded amazing. At any rate, thank you for the excellent analysis and video, Peter! Hugs and love from California!
