Hi Peter, many thanks for this session. For me, this is lesson #1, many thanks for guiding us. I would slightly change the title: “before you pick up a camera and before you bring a Model”. If I were a publisher I would require you to persist your words in paper, to be used in art/photography education. I like so much the referenced pictures you share: Women in Nature, my preferred subject. Woman, earth, air, water (cloud/ocean/ocean) and all of them properly illuminated. For me, there is not greater expression of freedom than a half-naked woman in the beach sand; for me, it means naked humanity talking to naked nature, as a sensorial experience; it is a full pleasure for my eyes. Thanks for showing how outdoors backgrounds should be designed, to complement the Model, never to distract the attention from her. In my case, this is critical, because my “studio” is the outdoor, where there is room enough to project all my ideas/wishes/thoughts/…, where there is not limit to my creativity. Thanks for sharing your pictures in the forest, I think they are quite complicated, because nature could be very distracting. If I were a photo professional, I would experiment with outdoor backgrounds, before bringing the Model. Thanks for demonstrating how outdoor light should be driven. B&W is not the absence of color, but the arbitrary presence of light and its intensity. This video needs analysis to take the most of it (one picture on a time), and homework to experiment, after it; I think this Xmas break I am going to be very busy with these activities. Thank for bringing education and inspiration to the Internet. Once again, you dignify yourself, as a genius that shares his knowledge, and to the human race which beauty you capture

More than once I've told people on the forums I'm on. That their goal should be. To get to the point. That they don't have to ask. What lens did you use? What settings did you use? I tell photographers their goal should be when they look at an image. Not to wonder what that photographer did as much as what they themselves would do to create that image. I realize that enveloped in that is some awareness of what the original photographer used. But far more important is learning to put your brain in the place of the photographer to try and imagine what lens and what aperture you would use to create that image. I remember just last week looking at a photograph of a man sitting in a pickup truck. And thinking that I would have shot that photograph with my 35mm lens with a smaller aperture.

I sorta follow the same logic as you do . I work backwards , according to what the customer wants or the concept , I then script my shoot . If required for a particular location I'm not familiar with ,i will scout the location first , take some test shots of view points or angles , then select the lens and nessesary gear I will need.

ANOTHER fabulous video. i never really did much portrait work (some T&I over the years and LOTS of Officer Portraits in the US Air Force) so i have a working knowledge of camera and lighting set-ups but i dont know how to develop my own "look". I also did some Graphic Arts in the Air Force but it wasnt much ARTIST work as it was more general stuff for briefings and the like. i always seem to have NO imagination. as a PJ, im not half bad but its really not what i THINK i want to aspire to. not much market for that anymore with so many newspapers going to reporters with iphones... STILL good inspiration, explaining why you do things the way you do!

Interesting. Over the past year or two I've gone back to using prime lenses instead of zooms even though I shoot landscapes and used zoom lenses for years. I just enjoy shooting with the primes. But, using the primes requires me to visualize the photo I want more so than using the zooms. When I'm near home, I take my gear in two pelican cases then pull out the lens or lenses I think I'll need to get the shot for a certain location. For me it's just more fun to work that way. Happy holidays to you, Bec, and your families.

I've been working on making mine more streamline which is a slow process since I'm moving TBs worth of data around from external drives to a Drobo. I know its not a Hassy, but I just bought a Fujifilm GFX, I'm getting a good feel for the focal length conversions but the aperture and depth of field is really frustrating me. For example 80mm 1.7 looks like FF 1.4. 110mm F2 looks like FF F4..to me. any tips?

I'm not sure if it will be clear what I will say, but by discussing the technical characteristics in detail, you are misleading newcomers that having received the world's best camera in their hands, they will be able to shoot the world's best scenes :) The result of photography is like playing musical instruments. You can be a virtuoso and play someone else's melody from the notes all your life, or you can be an average performer, but learn to improvise. Good music is obtained from a musician who owns the technique and even from a lousy piano he will be able to give the maximum. At the same time, Stradivari will not help a student playing scales. Probably these are banal statements, but often I see questions "how can I learn to shoot like Bresson?" Perhaps first we need to master the technique and technology of the entire process of taking a picture, and in the case of working with people - psychology and the skills of managing emotions. Better to dive right into the topic of "emotional intelligence". By the way, I may not understand the conversation well, but the dialogues in Peter's studio never seem mechanical and this distinguishes a good photographer from an artisan who takes a photo for a passport. Moving away from the topic of staged shooting of models to fixing reality, I have adopted a simple rule for myself: "if, when looking around, I have a name for the scene that is taking place, I must use a camera." Further, when shooting and processing the frame, the photographer can enhance this plot and hide unnecessary details that are not related to the topic. The NAME of the picture that has arisen in your imagination is the core of the composition. As a result, you can wait two hours for a bird in the right place in space or shoot one dark corner of a brick wall for years to find the right light. When you understand the subject and title of your future shot. Or it may happen that the scene you saw will never be repeated and if you "did not have time to pull out and put on the gas mask".. maybe lucky in the next life ;) There are other methods of shooting, you can just roll the dice in the hope of getting a good angle, but with more experience the photographer gains established habits and his own style. Usually they say to beginners: think what you want to say with your picture. In fact, they need to be told: learn to SEE what is interesting to you and capture your experiences in the photo. Otherwise, how are you different from the police camera on the wall, it also records everything for years. This is perhaps the main thing that I would like to say on the topic "Before you pick up a camera". There can be many opinions here, of course. Thanks and good luck promoting this channel!

Peter!!! I don't know if teachers like you. Are getting me upset or someone don't know what their talking about! You guys keep telling folks how to do this! How to do that! Why??????? Is my work in 2 books! The Smithsonian! A movie! 5 music magazines! Robert Downey Jr. On set of a movie! I can keep listing things for another hour!!! I have no schooling! No trainning!. I found my way on my own. I do not have 5% of the camera equipment you guys have. Why Peter? You guys are controlling the people following you. Your not empowering them! That is why I am getting pissed off! You all setting bad examples! Anyone doubt me? I can prove everything i just said about me. I'm saying this because I care! And I am not doing this for money! Maybe I am starting a Revolution in the world of photography. Everyone needs to find their own way. You follow the teachers. You all become robots!!!
@PeterCoulsonPhotographer3 жыл бұрын
Doug the only thing telling people is to have a reason to why THEY are using that lens and that aperture, NOT what lens and aperture to use. I hate schooling, camera clubs and robots. I continue to tell photographers there are no rules and shoot what they love to shoot the way they want to shoot. ps I don't see why you need to name drop, I never do that :)
@Mrwhomeyou3 жыл бұрын
I mean if you don't wanna learn from others... ...but maybe some people don't want to "find their own way," maybe I don't want to invent mathematics by drawing in the sand... ...maybe that "self-taught" is inefficient and some people like to start their thought process on the shoulder of giants. I don't know, I don't have a problem with becoming robots.

I live near Hallmark School of Photography. They are now closed. I have heard so many bad stories. Lots of students are over 40,000 in debt! Most of them hate! Photography. Never went into the field. That is what I am talking about. What teachers and schools are doing too so many. Do you? Understand that. Just one point I am trying to make. The students are being torn down. Not empowered. The Information overwhelms them. I have about 50 more stories i could say. Another time! Thanks! For reaching out to me.

@@dougpotosky4102 Who watches videos like this when in their life? Aren't there enough other channels bragging to rule their corner of the small business world with either just a 50mm or a 35 & 85mm combo, catering business focused beginners?

Because your work is being better in olden days. You used to shine Now you're predictable.

maybe it's 2 years living in the most locked down city in the world, or only been able to shoot local, no travel and no international models no international clients :)
