Great interview. I do however strongly disagree that Americans are still best at inventing new technologies and Chinese are best only at execution. This was the case maybe 5 to 7 years ago but nowadays China is constantly out innovating the US in most technologies (any technology related to electric cars or solar panels, or wind turbines, or high speed rail, even space technology is being developed much faster in China). China's universities, especially those with stem courses, are rising very fast with China graduating from many time more stem graduates each year, while the US is having a crisis in getting students to show interest in Stem. Also more Chinese papers are cited worldwide than American ones for one or two years now. One just has to look at Huawei, Dji, Xiaomi, Byd, etc to see that Chinese have no issues out inventing the west.

If Larry Page thought that the holy grail was a single correct answer, he is far from being as clever as I thought he was. Big Brother might wish to define search in that way, but I don't. Hey, Google: What is the one correct way to cook an egg? Google: Hire a five-star Michelin chef to ask each person at the table how they like their eggs, and have the chef prepare each serving accordingly. Hey, Google: Holy smokes, that seems awfully expensive. Google: The simplicity of one-size-fits-all does not come cheap. But if you like, I can sell you a universal IKEA flat pack which contains every known appliance you could possibly need to cook an egg any possible way. Hey, Google: Will all these gadgets fit into my kitchen? Google: If you have to ask, probably not. But if you like, I can sell you a universal private volcanic island with enough kitchen space to hold every kitchen appliance ever invented in the history of humankind. Hey, Google: This seems to be getting more expensive, not less expensive. Google: Okay, I get it. You've only got two bucks. Just boil the damn thing for four minutes (pssst, and don't tell Larry I gave you a second opinion, this is just between us).

I think he sees your AI learning your interests and preferences and giving the best option for you. And I'm willing to bet he also envisions you being able to set your preferences in a way that provides you with more options, in the right context for you.

Many breakthroughs in the USA are driven by individuals born in China, largely due to the strong education systems in their home countries. The USA benefits from harnessing the advanced knowledge and skills these students bring. However, many of these students and their parents are often more focused on the prestige of the university's name than the education itself. Meanwhile, China is already surpassing the USA in innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence, 5G technology, renewable energy, e-commerce, high-speed rail, and quantum computing and communication.

China has a major Achilles' heel looming on the horizon. While every nation will face challenges, those with large populations, especially those reliant on cheap labor, will feel the impact more profoundly! One of China’s greatest strengths has been its hardworking and dedicated workforce, providing inexpensive labor. This has allowed China to produce goods at low costs, dominating global markets. However, within the next 20 years, the rise of robots and AI will likely replace much of the cheap labor force worldwide. When that happens, all nations will have access to cheap manufacturing through automation. At the same time, there will be fewer traditional jobs for everyone. (Also products can then be made cheap everywhere) For China, this transition could be especially problematic. How will the country provide employment for such a vast population? This shift could challenge the very identity of China's labor-driven economy. For a nation that prioritizes stability above all else, such a disruption may pose an even greater challenge than it might for Western nations.

China population is collapsing, so the combination of AI and Automatic production will greatly benefited their manufacturing capability, you re missing many important point as you forget that China is the only country in the world have such manufacture capability, but that capability is largely supported by the enormous supply chain ecosystem within China which cannot be copied by others. At the same time, China has the world most efficient and huge domestic logistic supported by all kinds of high tech infrastructure, and China re already dominated in these field, automation manufacture also require huge amount of energy, then again, China already dominated in green energy field, which means in future, they have the advantages of having lower energy cost to produce than its competitors. So yeah, If China manufacture turns to AI + robotic it simply hard to be coppied by others , also note that China has the world's largest STEM graduate population.

I guess how much Chinese success in digital markets is their vast and protected domestic market which allows no foreign competition while Chinese companies are free to access Western digital markets. TikTok ban issue should be about strict reciprocity, not other data or national security issues. Baidu, Tencent, Alibaba are products of pure digital protectionism, not any Chinese hard work or cost effectiveness. And then China complains when Western countries just are starting to kick out Chinese companies from their markets to undo Chinese protectionism. Baidu tariffc and thus ad revenue will fall to zero the second the Google is allowed in Chinese market. It's pure protectionism. Same is going on in AI. China bans all foreign AI companies, including OpenAI, yet its "little giants" in AI like Minimax, Moonshot etc. want to access Western digital AI markets. This issue is so important and so less discussed in West and US even though it's central to Chinese digital strategy.

@Aedonius - are you ignorant of what you are saying? Is your uncle Sam paying you to say that?

Kai Fu has no clue where AI is going because he’s not in the mecca of AI which is SF. He was completely wrong about AI and creative jobs. AI super powers didn’t age well, he still believes 50% of jobs will be automated away by 2027 and that China is some how even remotely competitive in AI with the US.

He’s definitely wrong about China

AI will replace majority of jobs just look around you. You are ordering from Amazon where robots pick up all your orders, manufactures are using robots and AI to do majority of the tasks with only a couple of humans working in it, you order and pay at the stores when you check out, etc.... It's already happening as we speak and it will accelerate starting next year. Agenda 2030 plans happening.

Have you used their product of generative large models? In my experience, they are better than openai and google, especially when answering specific questions.

@@sed9406 Kai Fu’s AIs are running way behind the Chinese ones. Using US university’s research papers(of which is mainly done by Mainland Chinese) and implementing them in China is way behind locally grown Chinese ones. Look at the performance of deepseek and QWEN.
