There is a school of thought that unless you are a single-digit handicap, there is no need for you to be on the range and try to shape the ball left to right, right to left, low or high. The main goal should be to make repeatedly good contact with the ball and have a golf shot/shape that you can reasonably rely on. I am a decent golfer (single hcp) but when I play in tournaments I have learned not to try to hit a fade for that one pin that is tugged in the right corner of the green, when 90% of my shots before were just straight or draws. I think a lot pros tell their amateur partners in Pro-Ams to stick to one shot shape. I rather try to work on controling trajectory based on wind or obstacles on the course. Remember, something like 80% of all golfers are around 15 HCP or worse. There are other struggles than fades and draws on command to get to a 10 HCP.

Find a range with Trackman. Practice the same setup routine as you are going to use on the course. Start with Short Irons and work up the bag to driver. Take note of the trackman numbers for every shot.Especially if you are trying to make changes. When you've hit all your balls Stop and watch the ba5tard in the next bay stripping it 320yards 9there's alway one)make the grrrr sound. and then go and spend at least twice as long on the short game and putting areas.

If you don't have all the tech... something I've enjoyed is going to the range with a golf buddy. Literally a friend who firstly simulates conditions because you'll always be chatting on the course. Secondly instead of reviewing video constantly instant feedback from the mate should help and thirdly it stops you from rushing through the balls and challenges each other to focus on the pre-discussed routine. Finally it also gives you someone who helps you grow your game especially if they're better or in the case that they're not better than you teaching them helps you enforce your own fundamentals. Thanks Pete!!!

Great to see you incorporate a warm up - it’s an area often overlooked and many golfers come in cold, and start hitting. Using a warm up specific to a players needs can sometimes be the difference between being able to get in to the position to execute the skill you want or not, and also potentially avoiding injury. Say you have the inability to perform an overhead squat correctly like you showed, (Getting a TPI assessment for example can help to identify that) and have an issue like early extension identified by your coach, addressing that pre-practice in a warm up means your practice could be more effective. Doesn’t mean you don’t play good golf, but if it’s a factor that is effecting your ability to swing efficiently and an area your coach wants you to improve on then using a proper warm up may help you get there faster. Keep up the great info

Really good info for all skill levels Pete. Sometimes it is just about going and bashing balls, but we all can improve with these drills. I would include one thing though, always practice your chipping. You can always chip a few extra balls and work on types of shots. Some high, some low, some with lots of spin, and a couple of low runners as well.

Great video, Peter! I prefer to start my practice at the chipping range, much like Tiger Woods. Once my short swing is in sync and my shots are consistent, I move on to full swing shots and finish with the putter. Additionally, I make sure to stretch at home and on the way to the range. To prepare my back, I turn on the heated car seat. 50+ years routine. Cheers!

I am 100% ordering a hack motion now, I never knew how much wrist angles effected my game.

I used to practice at the local racecourse which had rugby posts in its centre. Starting at 100yds trying to hit through the uprights and scoring 1 pt for a conversion and then going back until I had a 7 iron in hand. My handicap went from 19 to 9 in one year. Width of the rugby posts being narrower than the green width my approach play improved leading to closer proximity to the hole and more birdie chances and easier pars.

I have recently reached single digits after consistent time on the range and a great deal of mental training, I like to train hitting different flights and shapes, then playing pressure building games on the range. When playing I’ll let the natural shape of my shots become apparent for the day and favour those. I will avoid hitting new shots with new clubs as the round goes on, If it’s a fadey driver day I’m better off hitting a straight ball that’s allowed to fade a bit, then starting one right and going for the draw. If a par 3 is screaming for a fade to avoid bunkers on the left protecting the pin, I’m better off hitting the ‘stock draw’ into the middle of the green and backing myself to 2 putt. When scrambling from behind a tree for example, I’ve gained confidence on the range and can back myself to hit the (high/med/low) (hook/draw/fade/slice) and go at it with confidence… Scoring isn’t always pretty and you’re better off thinking about birdies once you’ve got a wedge or a putter in hand, not from the fairway with a 2 iron 😂 Love your work Pete - please come to Australia 🙏🏽

Two things I like to remind myself when on a range, 1. Don't focus on distance with range balls. Studies show that range balls do not fly as far as a new quality ball, so don't worry if your 7 iron isn't going as far as you know it should. The balls are hit 1000's of times and they are usually reconditioned and refinished old balls and in some cases, they are limited flight. 2. spend more time on my short game than on your long game unless you're working on a specific thing. Short game is 50% or more of my range practice. 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 yard shots.
@mozzarella3416Ай бұрын
How does your first point not impact and contradict with your second point? If range balls don’t go the right distance, what’s the point of dialing those sub70 10 yard gaps with shit balls?
@troyrambo6804Ай бұрын
It's about rythm and timing. At a 60 yard shot the loss of distance on a range ball is only a couple yards. At 30 it's negligible. But at 130 with a wedge it could be as much as 10. Focusing on short game to clean up the strikes and consistency will carry over onto the course much easier than it will trying to force a range ball to get your normal full wedge orn7biron distance. Plus I bring my launch monitor with me.

For a beginner, the tip that worked for me the most is don't hit irons off the mats. Only wedges and woods. 1. Mats are bad on your body. 2. Realism off the grass. Get into real grass as much as possible because the sight, feel of stance and turf interaction is just so much different than on a mat. You could crush it at the range, and once you hit grass you just fluke. Keep it in grass and aim shots as if you are looking at a pin.

The #1 flaw or mistake I see in the USA, is guys who pull out DRIVER and hit the first 10 balls from the bucket expecting perfection. This is complete insanity. Start with PW, then 8 iron, 6 iron, a few 5W/3W's, and then Driver. I hit 4-5 shots with each iron before touching a wood. (This is advice I acquired from Mr. Jack Nicklaus in the mid-1980's.)

-If you don’t want to waste money- Get a bag of golf balls (150) and a pitching wedge, and a 7 iron go to your local field. If they have goal posts perfect, walk 50 yards away from them drop half. walk another 50 yards, repeat, chip to the goal posts, aim to hit the cross bar do fades stingers draws the lot, keep yourself engaged an having fun, Do this regularly and your short game will be deadly. Range balls🫥driver and putter is dependent on the weather and season, you can’t master them in non course conditions. Practice in awkward positions(out of the thick rough), not ideal positions (teeing off/ off mats)

The balls used at a range massively impact how you practice. With some of the cheap or low distance range balls you can't get reliable shape or distance data. It can actually be harmful to your game out on the course. If you're at a range that uses premium balls then sure, figure out ranges, gapping and shot shapes. Otherwise focus on the quality of ball striking, because you might be seeing a problem that's the result of the balls and not your swing. Mr. Shortgame did a good video on this not long ago testing different balls with a swing robot.

😂😅 warm-up... indeed. This without ball 10% of total training time. 30 balls warm-up and just getting contact and timing in check. But merely 100 balls total for technique and pressure training is way to little. There is one area that needs volume and that's automation. Getting something ingrained in the neural propreoceptors. Any pro in any ball or puck sports would go for 200 balls or more. Check NBA or tennis or Ice hockey. Power or speed training is something completely different ball game. Love the channe 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
