Cruisers are such great bikes because they're comfortable, easily customizable, and ready for accessories like luggage which makes them great all around bikes. The issue I have with cruisers is that they don't handle very well, but these two handle great for what they are. I'm a big fan of each of these bikes, and I wanted to take an up close look at what's different between them. There's a lot! Check these bikes out for yourself by connecting with the awesome team at Jim Gilbert's PowerSports here: powersports.wheelsanddeals.ca

I owned and rode a lot of bikes in my younger days but when I wanted to get back into riding I just wanted something that was fun to ride and had a little spirit. The Vulcan S 650 checked all the boxes. Got one in 17' new and it's been an awesome bike. I'm 60 now and I'll probably ride it til it dies, or I do. Happy trails.

I went and sat on the Eliminator , it is so tiny. Loved it being old, but man sitting on that S, yep my creeky bones needs my legs pushed out . Can't go wrong with the Elim, but the power and leg position of the S fit me best. 5'11" 210 lbs. Bad right knee. Picking it up Wednesday. So excited.

Went with the Eliminator myself, even at 6'1" I find it very comfortable. And the mid controls mean I can post instead of taking every bump on the tailbone like the forward controls on the Vulcan.

I've been on my 2015 Vulcan S since 2017 (bought it used with 845 km). After pretty much rebuilding it after the original owner seriously messed it up, I've been able to truly make this bike mine. It has more than enough power for me (I'm 5'1" with a 27" inseam) and my 6' tall, much bigger husband still is able to have his own fun with it. He loves how he's able to throw it around, unlike his Vaquero and the smile on his face after he borrows my bike is more than worth my letting him take off for a half hour or so. My smaller bike also has no trouble keeping up with his much larger one on our Alberta highways and I honestly feel like I'm at an advantage once we head into the Rockies as my bike takes to the curves so much better. I 💯 recommend the Vulcan S for all types of riders.

I got the eliminator a few months ago. It was my first road bike, and I found it incredibly fast and powerful. I also really enjoy how light and flickable it is on the turns. After riding this on and off the highway for a while, it seems silly to me that anyone would "need" a 1000cc+ unless they're going to the tack a lot.

thats what most riders find. Alot of riders that ride 1000cc plus bikes after awhile come back to middleweight 400 to 700cc machines and find them to be more enjoyable for the majority of people. Plenty of pep, but not so over the top that you can stay in control on normal roads and streets.

I like them both and can't make up my mind which one to buy. I like the looks of the Vulcan S engine because of the silver highlights. I like the 650cc because of more torque. But the Vulcan S is dated whereas the Eliminator is ALL NEW. I'm 70 years old and have been riding since 1964. I just sold my LAST Harley which I paid $37000 for, It broke down four times within the first year of ownership, NEVER AGAIN WILL I OWN A HARLEY. I sold it for $28000 one year later. I could buy either of these Kawasaki's with the money I lost on one Halrey. I'm going to stop by a Kawasaki dealer this coming Friday who has some Eliminators in stock. I've sat on a Vulcan S and it was very comfortable. I can't wait to check out the Elmiinator. I like the looks of the Eliminator a lot, but I worry about the passeneger seat and foot position. If I but an Eliminator I will add a flyscreen, a luggage rack, and a round leather bag for the rack. On the Vulcan S I'd have to add a passenger seat, and passenger foor pegs along with a small windshield, passenger backrest. I think I'm going with the Eliminator. We'll see this Friday.

I've been comparing 3 that I really like.. The vulcan 650, the Honda rebel 500 and my favorite (but expensive) the Indian scout sixty... But the last one is probably much later down the road for me... But I like the vulcan Alittle bit more because of the price and that more relaxed seating position, as a disabled Veteran, it's hard for me to be in the more sporty position.. Anyways, just window shopping for now, maybe next year I'll be able to safe enough to get one of these... But was curious on your thoughts about this compared to the rebel.. 😎✌️

@PeterLoweOne
@PeterLoweOne 3 ай бұрын
These are both great upgrades from what you're riding in my opinion. The Eliminator is a similar class to your Rebel 300 but it's a much higher performer. The Vulcan S is the next step up and may be exactly what you're looking for. Keep in mind when you sit in the Vulcan that it has a system of adjustments (and seat options) that can make it fit anyone much shorter than you, to much taller than you, so if it doesn't feel great right off the top, ask about the Ergo Fit adjustments to learn more about adjusting it to fit you perfectly.

Excellent comparison video! I'm 5'-6" and, though I prefer the look of the Vulcan, I'm guessing the Eliminator will be a better first bike for me. I'll have to compare at the dealership. Something that stands out to me which has not been discussed is that despite having a slightly smaller tank, with much better fuel efficiency the range on a tank of gas appears to be almost 100 miles more on the Eliminator. From what I see online, the Vulcan can only go about 150 miles on a full tank, while the Eliminator should go about 250 miles. This seems like a big advantage in quality of life.
@PeterLoweOne
@PeterLoweOne 2 ай бұрын
I haven't done a range test on either of these, so I can't speak about that. I do expect the Eliminator to be capable of fantastic mileage though. That's an interesting point that I'll have to look into. I owned a Versys 650 for years, and I know that the style of riding could really make a difference on fuel efficiency of that engine, but yeah, you raise an interesting point.

I'm a happy Vulcan S owner, it's by far the best bike I've ever had in about 18 years of riding. It's also the first cruiser I've ever had and now I'll never go back. I'm glad I got the Vulcan instead of waiting for an Eliminator, and not just because of the power difference. I expect Kawasaki has fixed a lot of the issues that the Vulcan has in regards to the seat comfort, spongy rear brake etc, but there are quite a few aspects of the Eliminator that I'm really not fond of, mainly the non-cruiser style sitting triangle (which in my opinion disqualifies it as a cruiser in the first place) but also a lot of the aesthetics such as the fork gaiters, the positioning of the ENORMOUS muffler, and especially the downpipes which look like they've been in an accident.

I've been driving a Vulcan S for 5 years and I absolutely love it. I do think the new Eliminator is really good looking and I love the new tech, but at 6'5", the Vulcan S is already small for me. No way I'd fit on the new Eliminator comfortably. I prefer the forward controls on the Vulcan S as well. However, with the Vulcan S being identical in just about every way for 9 solid year models.. I do hope we see a redesign soon. Honestly still an incredibly attractive bike, but a digital dash and full LED lighting would be a great start. I'd love to see a rear fender and tail light configuration more similar to this new Eliminator as well.

There's also new MBP C1002V which is pretty much larger Vulcan S with litre V-twin. No idea when that might be availible in Canada tho, it's new. Or get control extensions, I know there are sets availible for Vulcan S and both bigger rebels though Rebels are pretty small in general. I've been riding Vulcan S for 4 years now and only added highway bars on it to stretch my legs on longer trips and had saddle remade and its very comfortable.

I have a Vulcan S that I bought used. No abs, my only regret. It's my first bike and I have no intension of getting rid of it anytime soon. Easy enough to learn on, but I can easily cruise at 90+ mph all day. I personally would factor in the cost of whatever mods you want to get it to your personal taste. I've done the same and really happy with it.

Re top speed on the Eliminator: I found a video from a German YTer who took his up to 180 kph on the Autobahn. Not that it should really matter on a bike like this... :) I'm also not sure about any of these "modern retro" cruisers. They're very far from that old school look I like about both Harleys and metric cruisers and just seem like slightly altered street bikes with slightly re-tuned (and not very pretty looking) street- or sport-bike engines in them. Plus a lot of them will only give you very un-cruiser-like inline-two engines - kinda like on the early metric cruisers of the bad old days like the OG Eliminator, the EN500 or the OG Honda Rebels. And if you're not getting that cruiser look, why not simply opt for a naked or a touring bike? Both of which will probably be the more capable, agile and comfortable bikes because they don't have to adhere to things like "ultra low seat height" or "feet forward in the wind".

I would think up to 200 wouldn't be an issue on either one. 220 and above and I'd suggest staying with the 650. But that's just my opinion and I could very well be wrong in that opinion. I'm open to learn from others on this. I will say that too many people are writing off the 450 as not enough and in my experience, that would be a mistake. It's going to be a great bike for people with reasonable expectations when it comes to performance.

i have decided on getting the vulcan s and it is just a matter of when i move place and get a garage to be able to also get the bike. the two important things for me about the bike are: the seat that almost everybody says is very uncomfortable so you have to change and the weight of the clutch lever, which this video got me a bit worried... it is very unfortunate that we dont have a kawasaki store here (country... not city) and there about 2 second hand up for sale total. gonna have to check it and see how it suits me somehow also i somehow found the dash of the eliminator hideous! and until now i hadn't particulalry like the vulcan s one, i was just neutral on it. now it looks even better in my eyes with the analog rev meter

How do you find the seat in long distance travelling? It will be interesting to see if they expand the Eliminator lineup. I would think they won't prioritize that immediately, but I can see if this one sells well, they'll have to think about that. The class that I'd like to see Kawasaki step into is the lightweight, to middle weight modern adventure bike category. I think Kawasaki could build a great bike in this class if they put their resources behind it.

How do these compare to a Honda rebel 500?
@PeterLoweOne
@PeterLoweOne 4 ай бұрын
I haven't ridden a recent rebel, but in general, Kawasaki's 400 engine bikes have nearly identical horsepower to Honda 500 cc bikes, and they are usually lighter weight when in the same class. The Eliminator is a 450, not a 400, so I would think it has an edge. The Honda 500 engines are often a little lower revving as well. The Vulcan 650 engine is more enjoyable, and more powerful than the Honda 500, so both of these bikes would probably be my preference over the Honda for powertrain, but there is more to a motorcycle than just a powertrain, so it may be something that you have to take a closer look at with your preferences.

I disagree that having the offset shock affects handling. What it does do is require more money spent on the swingarm rigidity. Moving to the center is a money saving exercise. The dual shocks also mean the ability to use a cheaper swingarm. Thinks about high end bikes that use single sided swingarms.
@PeterLoweOne
@PeterLoweOne 4 ай бұрын
I probably could have explained that better. I see your point. Simply, and in an incomplete way, the point that I tried to make is that the central location of the updated chassis on bikes like the Ninja 650 did improve mass centralization, (likely weight) and contributes to better handling on THAT chassis. Not saying that handling CAN'T happen on a design that is like this, but the Versys and Vulcan don't have the latest and greatest from the 650 chassis, and to those riders, it probably makes no difference.

My wife has a Vulcan 650s and I have a street glide special (114). I know these bikes are in different ball parks, having ridden hers a few times, while it has enough power, any crosswind at highway speeds really knocks you around because it is so light, it also feels like I am struggling to get the higher speeds to speed by an 18 wheeler that is knocking me around a bit. I have zero issues with any of that on my Street Glide. I know that people love to meme on Harleys because of the cost, but my street glide just rides better and feels nicer in the corners. The point is that, the Vulcan is every bit of its price point, it makes a ton of compromises to get there. I had a Fat Bob before the Street Glide, it rode better also, and handled just fine in the corners.
