I will agree that the "Message Bible" may not be useful to study scripture to recall by memory. I also understand your concerns. However, I pray you think differently about translations. This is one literary work that depicts the Bible as one "story", as a complete "Book", to be absorbed by English speaking readers who desire a more flowing perspective. Is the Chinese Bible, the Russian translation, the Afrikaans translations, the Zulu version not perhaps "lost in translation?" How far are these other language "works" off from the beloved KJV, ESV, which are indeed "my" favourite translations? Do the other diverse nations of the world get deceived by their distinct flawed translations, that have been "adapted" to be understood according to their unique culture? Or is their Bible not about the theme, or the "message" that God is trying to equip us with? I can criticize the Dakes Annotated Bible to pieces if I want. But it was so beneficial to me over 30 years. I have learned so much from many translations, praise God. The Zulu Bible has large chunks missing. Who is accountable for that? Must they, Zulu Christians, burn their Bibles, if they find "error" and then read only their former "masters" colonial originated translations? (Edit... You, the creator of this channel have not said that people must "Burn the Message", However a person said this on another... sorry for the mistake quote.) If so, which one translation, ESV, NIV, NKJV, CSB or the creative Amplified V? Will you teach them the English language first? Or will you present them with a Zulu translation on your missionary trip to allow the Word of God to penetrate their Souls, through the Holy Spirit, as God determines? We are 7 Billion unique people on earth, with over 150 different unique, diverse languages, many different cultures, and we Westerners, in our (sometimes) "Ivory towers of knowledge", think that this translation, or that one is evil? Wow? It's not a Bible translation that sends you to Hell, unless it is blatantly evil and erroneous. It is the intents and desires of your own heart, your rebellion, your refusal to believe in Jesus Christ of Nazereth that sends you there. Dont limit the "work" of others for Christ, unless God has told you clearly to reject it. Think, Mark 13:10 KJV, when passing criticism on "Bible translations" -- "And the gospel must first be published among all nations". Published in what perfect "translation?" If the "Message Bible" leads one person, to whom the style, theme, and presentation of the "Message Bible" appeals -- to Christ, perhaps a young budding poet, in the world, I would rather rejoice with the Angel's in heaven than pass judgement on another Christian's percievably honest, literary work.

Elsewhere Peterson has said that he translated the Message because people in his congregation read New York Times more than they read scripture. So he wanted to put the bible into the language spoken on American streets with the hope it would get people reading it. He also said don't use it for study. Its that simple!

The phrase in question does not mean that use of the given name "Jesus" has any power to save. It is the person of Jesus who was born 2,000 years ago, died and rose from the dead who saves. The word "name" used in the text is meant only as to pointer to the person. So it does not matter if different languages translate the Greek in different ways, it is the person in whom our faith points that will bring salvation.

lol ok well my opinion is that everyone is overreacting about this. there is nothing blasphemous, "satanic"lol, or wrong about the creation of the messages version. no one has to be worried about judgement over it. without the NIV and as of recently the messages version I would be lost trying to do any Bible reading on my own. i enjoy reading different versions to get a better understanding of the Word. it's just like having to change your wording slightly to teach a kid with ADD. I agree and share the opinion this should NOT be your only Bible. KJV is known to be the most accurate. but NIV and messages help to comprehend KJV. stop judging.

as I read on I have seen some stuff that is left out and maybe some stuff that is wrong. however, I still don't see anything wrong with owning a copy, reading it, and then going back to a real Bible and studying. It definitely helps me to understand the wording in my other Bibles. since I can't have my preacher with me 24/7 to answer all my questions as I read a real Bible lol I like having the message and NIV on my bookshelf for when I'm trying to read KJV looking like🤔🤤😲😩 "why don't I know what these words mean!?" I don't think I'm "satanic" or not getting into Heaven bc I wish to get a better grasp when reading a "real" Bible. but I'll admit I don't like some of what I read in Luke(message) thus far

Well people might indeed persecute him because I think his version heavily relies on his own interpretation and strays away with the original intent of the passages as a result. If he indeed has good faith on his deeds that New Yorkers might understand, well alright I’ll give credit him for that. But when it strays away from the original intent of the passages, that ain’t great also. Many Christians rely on versions that are more faithful to the old manuscripts of the Bible, including me. But in the end, I am not a fan of people being rude at him also.

I had a professor in college, Phil Levine, who was an excellent poet. I remember him saying once, talking about translating--his Spanish was very good--that the best translators are poets, not literalists. I think the failure of most American translations of the Bible is that there's no poetry in them. They're mealy-mouthed. Another Jewish professor I had in college called the King James Version "perhaps the finest, most enduring work of prose and poetry in the English language." God is a poet, Jesus was a poet, David was a poet. Isaiah!
