How on earth do you make the parts so very small and yet maintain function? Those oil pipes alone are so tiny but yet they function and the size of all the plumbing in the cab and such small valves and yet operational at boiler pressure for the injectors. Absolutely amazing. I take it everything is the correct 1:1 scale by the looks? ❤
@PetersRailway10 ай бұрын
Hi, Good question! The answer is that it is quite difficult. In truth, the fittings are not truly to scale, so sometimes they are a little larger but in the correct proportions. A good example is the two mechanical lubricators on the running boards. These are in fact 50% oversize to allow the internals and a supply of oil. No one has ever noticed because they are the right shape and have many of the details you would find on the originals. The oil pipes are 1/16" outside dia, with a very tiny hole through the middle. luckily, oil, unlike water, still flows slowly through tiny holes and anyway, the flow rate is almost non-existent! The pressure isn't a problem - as it gets smaller, the pressure has less area to act on. However, injectors on models do not normally work up to 120 psi, so these are adjusted/tuned to work a little higher. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS. A good observation! My original plan was to make the nameplates by cutting out the letters with a tiny piercing saw and soldering them onto the plate. In the end they were photo-etched. That is exactly right. The engine is really just like the full size in details and behaviour. About the only thing which isn't to scale is the diameter of the internal fire tubes in the boiler. Good idea! Keep your eye on ebay. The only thing you have to worry about is the boiler. Don't get anything made of steel, as you cannot tell how much it has rusted. Copper is much better!! Chris.

You might enjoy looking at Mamod models. www.mamod.co.uk/ They are simple, but you have the huge benefit of starting with something new which you know will work! The other company to look at is Stuart Models. www.stuartmodels.com/ Much more sophisticated and much more expensive. Enjoy looking and dreaming about what to do. Also, maybe there is a model engineering society or club near you. Then you can start down the road of building your own!!... All best, Chris.

Hi, you don’t vent your steam space to atmosphere on start up to expel air? Beautiful piece of machinery sir, absolutely gorgeous. The age of steam will never die with passionate enthusiasts like you about, well done.
@PetersRailway15 күн бұрын
Hi That is a good observation. I haven't ever vented the steam space to get rid of the air as it doesn't seem to be necessary. The main reason is that the steam blower (jet blowing steam up the chimney to keep the fire going when engine stopped) will take any air with the steam while lighting up etc. If you want to see more about that, my video on How to Drive a Steam Locomotive has some more details... Thanks!! Yes, it does take a bit of getting going and, if it goes a bit dull, it takes a lot of getting bright again. Something I’ve been taught to do is when steaming a boiler from cold is to shut the bottom shut off on one of the sight glasses and leave the top valve on and then open the drain, which allows all the excess oxygen to vent out of the boiler and also gives you an indicator when the boiler has started to make steam (this also gives the boiler abit more life as it reduces oxygen in the boiler to corrode the boiler)
@PetersRailway Жыл бұрын
That is a cunning idea! My boiler is made of copper so probably corrosion isn’t a concern. However to show when steam is up it’s a good plan. I usually use the injector steam supply which shows up at the injector overflow. Chris If you would like to know more about the books I write please see www.petersrailway.com

Thanks for explaining the injector sequence. I have just finished a Pansy Pannier 5” gauge and have run it for a few minutes only when the water level drops. I am very wary about how to use the injector for the loco to run. Just practice I suppose. I will be so happy if I can succeed as it’s taken me years to get to this stage.
@PetersRailway Жыл бұрын
Hi Adrian, Thanks for the good comments! Yes, injectors are, or can be, temperamental things. I find the WD40 after a run seems to help. The problem is that our cones are only made of brass and the zinc leaches out if left for a long time as there is always water in them. I used to clean the cones with citric acid etc, however that seems to make the cones even more fragile. If you can get some cold water to run through before the steam, then that helps them to pick up. PS. You can get lots of practice with the engine propped up on the bench. There isn't really a need for a roller type rolling road, you can just rest the buffer beams on some solid bits of wood. Then you can run for hours and get the hang of it all. If you don't tell anyone, you can even apply the brakes gently to give it a load to work against! Chris.@@adrianbolton4847

Thank you! Making models has been my hobby since I was 11, so there is a lot of learning (from mistakes!) in that time. Essentially, you do need to have a workshop with hand tools, but also some machines. The most important is a lathe, you really can't do without one. Also, a milling machine. While some small models can be made entirely on a lathe, a mill makes life much easier. A good source of information is the magazine, Model Engineer. If you subscribe to that, you will learn a lot and decide if the hobby is for you. Thanks for watching! Best wishes, Chris. PS.
