Nice. I know this was 5 years ago. But I ran across it now. I know you probably will not respond and that is OK. Just want to thank you. As I am putting together my 1970 440 as I type. It is old school except for the aluminum heads. I will be using the 70 exhaust manifolds and a 69 Six Pack intake. It has an old 484 purple shaft flat tapped. I have pre oiled with a melling high volume oil pump and it puts out 80lbs. I have a Milodon 7 quart oil pan. It will appear totally stock in my 70 GTX. I have painted the inner fender wells and fire wall. Also have all the parts to the air grabber hood ready to go. Rebuilt the brakes and front end. New shocks all the way around. I hope to be driving it by summer. I have all the parts to put it back together except for the seat covers and new foam. Thanks again for a really nice build. I believe my engine if everything is with in spec. Will put out about 450 hp. 475torque. But it's only a guess.

I was wondering what type of air cleaner you ran. As that performer is almost 1.7 inches taller than stock. I had a half inch spacer on my stock setup an the top of the stock air cleaner would rub on the underside of the hood insulation. I was running a 750 street demon which I would also bet is lower than the 850 you are running there. This is on a 1968 GTX stock hood. Great videos thanks for sharing your knowledge. Question for you... I have a 72 chevy 400 small block. And a set of new promax heads. 64cc chambers. 2.02/1.60 valves. With 185cc intake runners. The intake i have at the moment is a Weiand X-celerator. The block is stock std bore and factory pistons. Dished. It was a 160hp two barrel engine. But i was hoping the 64cc heads would increase the compression. I will eventually be having the block bored and trued up. But this year its going back together with the stock crank, rods and pistons. So my question is what cam shaft would you recommend for this engine combination. The car is an 84 camaro. 4.11 gears. 700r4 transmission and 2500 stall converter. Roughly 3200 lbs. Ill be running it on the 1/8 mile drag strip. And street driving now and then. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks again
@PetesGarage7 жыл бұрын
You have to match the cam to the valve springs. So either choose a cam that matches what you have, or buy a bigger cam and get the valve springs to match. A racing cam will kill stock valve springs, even in promax heads.
@martyjohnsonozarkoutdoors81987 жыл бұрын
Pete's Garage Sorry i should have gave you those specs too. The springs are supposed to be good for .550 lift. And for a flat tappet hydraulic non roller cam. And i would also like to be able to get by on pump gas. I was watching your video on cam selection and realized that the cam timing of the intake closing has a lot to do with the actual compression and what type fuel i can run. I know going from the 76 cc stock heads to 64 cc is going to make a considerable difference in compression even on the stock dished pistons . I just don't want it to be so much that i have to cut back on timing and lose power. So i guess what im asking is. With a cam that makes power in the 2000 to 5600 rpm range. For drag racing. And no more than .525 lift. What in your opinion would be the best duration and lobe separation angle to go with on a 400cubic inch engine and what should i look for as far as intake valve closing btdc. The cam is the heartbeat. And i dont have a lot to spend on the engine this year. So i really need to get it right the first time. Always before i looked at the power range that the cam was advertised at. And picked one that way. But i see after watching your video that i could have done better. Oh and if you have any decals about your KZbin channel. Id be happy to slap some on my old hot rod this summer before the track he opens. I think a lot of guys could learn from your channel. Thanks again.
@PetesGarage7 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea, I'll get some decals made. I would go to the Comp Cams website and use their tools to help you select a cam. Call tech support from a couple manufacturers and see what they say. It's not as difficult as you think. 110 LSA for sure with a .525/.525 is a good tartget

@AB-80X4 жыл бұрын
It's a function of the dual plane intake. They make a lot of low end torque and run great, but at the same time, their cylinder to cylinder distribution is not very good. With the Edelbrock RPM Airgap on BBC engines, i have seen as much difference as 11.5 AF on one cylinder and 14:5 on another. I have a Mopar 540 with the same heads, and after trying a few manufolds on the dyno, I settled on a Weiand single plane. It virtually overlaid the graph of the Edelbrock from 2500 to 4000 rpm, and above that it picked up power. Part of that was of course because it was a single plane and the large cube motor liked that monifold, but some of it was also because the distribution was a lot better. When I used the Edelbrock it leaned out in the higher rpm, and looking at this dyno sheet, this looks to be doing it too. I adhere to the idea that the right AF is where the motor makes the most power, i.e the engine tells you what AF and what timing it wants. But an AF over 13 at WOT in the higher rev range is a bit uncomfortable for me. 12.5 to 12.7 is about as high as I like to go, and usually that's also where the power is the highest. Maybe a 92 or 93 jet would be the ticket rather than the 90. Once i was blissfully unaware of in how much danger a cylinder could be in on a carbed setup. Then I started to dyno things with 8 sensors. It's amazing what we get away with and how bad cylinder to cylinder distribution can be with carbs and dual plane manifolds.

To get to 600 hp SAE, you need to go this route. Get a piston that takes your compression up to 10.5 or 11. Get Trick Flow 240's. Get a solid roller with about 250 int. @ .050 w. about 650 lift. Use the Trick Flow single plane intake That's what you need to make an honest 600 hp SAE. The stuff you have a far from up to the task. I make about 650 hp STD but at 185 F. So about 600-610 SAE. But that's a bored and stroked 540 with the Trick Flow 240 heads, Weiand single plane and the largest hydraulic roller Howards make paired up with Harland Sharp 1.6 rockers. If you want a 440 to make that power, you need RPM and much more flow that what the stock heads will give you. That Torker II is also a pretty terrible intake to be a bit blunt.

Hi Pete, Awesome series on the 440 build. I like your style. I learned a lot which is good as I'm getting ready to build a 440 for my Superbird race-replica. I'm thinking I want to get at least 600 hp for the Silver State Challenge. What recipe would you recommend for doing a 90 mile endurance race with a top speed of 200+? Obviously I'll have a rear end with some tall gearing and I'm thinking of putting Gear Vendors gear drive behine the 727. I need help with which heads/cam/ pistons and crank combo and intake and carb set up. Any recommendations? No turbo or supercharger wanted yet. Thanks! Chris in Seabeck Wa.
@dannyfasttcars86127 жыл бұрын
Yes I totally agree I build mopar engine for a living so do have high expectations but the output that this engine produced was more inline to what a stock stroke 440 with properly ported cast iron heads and mild flat tappet cam does. I just pulled a 499 off the dyno last weekend that has ported cast iron heads a old mopar .528 flat tappet cam factory six pack induction and 9.8:1 compression. It produced 640 ft lbs of tq at 4300 RPM and 578 HP at 5200 RPM. This combination should have easily made the same amount of tq with at least 615 plus HP. I would be embarrassed and taking the engine back apart if it couldn't perform better then a stock stroke cast iron heads engine at half the cost. I don't know any professional engine builder who would ever just pull a head out of the box and bolt it on without verifying that every specification was correct. This gives Mopars a bad name with such a under performing 10g combination. The detail on the other hand was fairly nice but some of the most important details have been overlooked.
@PetesGarage7 жыл бұрын
Interesting point Danny. I agree with you and could have gotten huge numbers, but I have to think about what the customer wants and build an engine that not only fits their needs, but will perform for a very long time. The target was 500 HP, not 600, so I met the goal and it runs fantastic for the car it's going in. It is also going to England so it's not as cheap to run as it is in the US. Gas over there is very expensive and giving him a 600+ HP engine would cost a fortune to run. I'm never embarrassed when the customer is happy. Maybe I will make a video series about how to squeak out every last bit of HP. Thank you for your comment.
@PetesGarage7 жыл бұрын
You'll have to work backwards, how fast will the tires be rotating, what gear ratio in the back, what RPM will the transmission be turning, where is peak torque needed in the engine to make sure 200 MPH is possible, what cam fits that torque range etc...

The reason the thermostat is left out is not to heat it up faster - it's so the dyno controls the engine coolant temp and not the thermostat. Note from former Chrysler dyno engineer of 13+ years :)
@PetesGarage5 жыл бұрын
That is true, and I agree. My dyno guy has a small reservoir of water with no thermostat so it heats hp pretty quick.
@Zero-Fox-Garage5 жыл бұрын
i guessed higher than 532 hp, but that was before I saw it being tested with the alternator, water pump and at 180 F coolant temp. The 850 didn't help anything, and either did the dual plane, but both are easy to swap out.
@PetesGarage5 жыл бұрын
The customer had 1 goal, just go over 500 and make it streetable
@zxtenn4 жыл бұрын
agree with the dual plane comment, I would have tried a single plane, stroker already has gobs of torque but for the street maybe customer wants more? Yes, carb with airhorn, etc... Nice strong street motor, plenty of guys run 650 cams not 550 so Pete being moderate, something over cammed is hard to live with on the street
@AB-80X4 жыл бұрын
Not only is the engine dressed and at a real world temp, the correction factor is SAE. 532 is pretty stout. Between 570-600 hp if you compare it to the STD numbers many others use.
@AB-80X4 жыл бұрын
@@zxtenn The 850 is very much in the right spot for this combo. You could probably get away with a 750, but 850 is pretty much spot on. As for the manifold, you are not entirely wrong. I have a 540 Wedge and tested a few manifolds, including the Edelbrock. Now normally the notion would be to run the dual plane for street, but I found that the Weiand single plane picked up power everywhere in the curve, and also found that cylinder to cylinder distribution was better. I have heard similar things from others running the old Holley single planes on the Wedges. My guess is that it has to do with the fact that a single plane normally has short runners, but due to the general design of the RB, even the single planes often have quite long runners. They kind of end up being the best of both worlds.
@zxtenn4 жыл бұрын
@@AB-80X Many times its an educated guess and the dyno is the judge by swapping this and that, takes time and costs $$$$$ but a good motor isnt cheap anyway so its worth the extra to get max. output of a given engine and combination and living with a hugely overcammed engine isnt fun when all the real power starts at maybe 4 grand unless it's like you 540. This isn't 1968 were people take a stock GTO 400, throw on an 850 then all they get is a HUGE bog. I am 65 and had a 67 Camaro which was i built as a Yenko clone so it was a 427/425 with 456 gears and a 4 speed, that was 1975 so a typical STRONG set up for the day. 425 version had a good solid cam, 4 bolt mains, 11:1 comp. and the rect. port heads which there is STILL so much debate about VS the oval port heads. I had a buddy with a 65 GTO and he threw on an 850 with a powerglide, he thought it was fast until be brought it to the drags and barely got 15 flat. Unfortunately in those days you couldnt just order a set of DART AL heads and gain 75 hp with a good cam and manifold. Since i bought only my Camaro body with the 12 bolt i also knew someone who had an L-88 with the AL heads but that was kind of expensive so a friend found me the 427/425 which came from a late 60's Impala, it had a spun rod bearing, stock bore, etc. I miss the looks my 67 RS with the L-88 hood, 8 quart pan hanging down scattershield and front spoiler, looked and was intimidating

Nice strong street engine,,,someone going to have a low 12, high 11 second Super Bee with plenty of traction naturally, I think a BBC would make about a 100 more though...….. Did you or the owner think of a single plane intake? I see you used a 'basic' carb with the airhorn intact HOPE YOU GOT THE 'ISSUE' WITH SOMEONE STEALING YOUR CHANNEL NAME RESOLVED? I watched your entire series and enjoyed it, in particular the casting differences, 'Performance Engine Rebuilding' can get 650 from a 496 BBC, he has a series where he explains the head casting's, which head is a better choice and the 'good' port and 'bad' port scenario, you can make the cast heads perform with the proper work and naturally time

You are not very well informed, are you? Let's look at how Mast test their motors. First off, they used STD, not SAE. Second of all, they STEP test, which adds about 10-15 numbers easily. Third of all they run temps in the 120-130 range. If you dressed a Mast 550 hp motor and tested it like this, you are probably looking at 490-500 hp. Have a nice day.
