I’ve been fortunate to have PBGV’s for over 25 years. I’ve had many breeds both pure and mixed. Peebs are by far the most intelligent, fun to be around, loyal happy dogs in my experience. You look at that face in the morning and you know it’s going to be a good day. People need to remember they are hounds and not keeping them on a leash is definitely not wise, they’ll get on a scent and to them that’s all that matters. One of the health issues not mentioned is SRM (Steroid Responsive Menengitis). It’s very painful for the dog, but highly treatable and in both my dogs they grew out of it. With the exception of bloodwork there is no way to diagnose it, and it can come up without warning even after a perfect blood test. For the owner all it takes is patience a good vet and an established treatment plan. It is also important to keep your dog stress free. They’re wonderful dogs and give back 1000% of what you give them.

Among the terriers, huskies, boxers, German shepherds and collies ive had over the years, PBGV’s are the best breed of dog I’ve experienced. They are intelligent, joyful, active and loving. I cant recommend them enough.

There are some generalizations here that are inappropriate. Perhaps the most important are the mention of health issues. Find a good breeder and take his/her advice. (Where do you find a good breeder? Start with the national breed club.) I have my third and fourth PBGVs. I find them utterly delightful. Ignore that "intelligence ranking." It was based on a survey that gave high rankings to more biddable breeds and has nothing to do with intelligence. The narration is correct in that they should not be left off lead. Even if you have a good recall. PBGVs will follow their noses. And don't call them "petty." Try to more more closely approximate the French pronunciation, puh-TEET.
