i recommend looking into kibbe body types and colour seasons too, it really explained why i never look good in “mature/elegant” styles (i am a soft gamine) and any “classic little black dress” looks awful on me - i’m a soft summer so black is one of the worst colours i can wear, it makes me look ill. everyone’s basics are very, very different - the cut, the style, etc. as a gamine i wear funky playful accessories and doll-like adorable dresses and look elegant and like my age (26)! but almost anything you typically see in outfits recommended for young adult women who want to dress elegant looks like i’m wearing my mom’s old clothes. meanwhile if a younger friend of mine wears what i do, she looks like she stole these clothes from a toddler, and that’s because her body type is natural (it’s a name of category in kibbe). but she looks stunning in things that don’t suit me! so fun to finally understand why.

Not to presume, but if you're looking bad in turtle necks and button downs because of a large bust, I have a couple of tips. Turtle necks make large busts look saggy because of the expanse of cloth between neck and apex. To combat that, wear a necklace over the turtle neck to visually break up the space. For a button down, buy larger and then have it tailored with darts. Of course we can also just avoid these garments. But it helps to know I think.

I started a sustainable fashion journey some 1 year and a half ago. Switched to second hand buying, got my colour analysis done, and started following sustainable fashion influencers that would mostly advertise dressing with basics, with a lot of inspiration from Pinterest. I have to say that this process has helped me to declutter my previous wardrobe and slowly start to understand my personal style. However, I realised that basics never look like those on Pinterest on me. I mostly end up looking bland and uninteresting when wearing basics. So I'm going back again to introducing good unique pieces in my wardrobe, but this time with more awareness. Pinterest pictures look so good not only because of the features of the models, but also because of posing, lighting and many more embellishments that don't translate into real life.

If you know anything about Kibbe system (or similars) you know that models and most of influencers have a (Flamboyant) Natural body. This type of body looks gorgeous in basics and relaxed lines. Dramatics also look fine in basics, but if they're long and structured. Classics look good in basics when they are well tailored for their body, and the have a little of old money influence in the details (so no plain basics). Gamines look fantastic when they don't wear the typical basic, but cropped, contrasted in colors and patterns. And maybe Romantics look worse, because plain basics nowadays are cut and ensembled as men's clothes (is easier so cheaper to produce), and this body shape needs to transmit femenine energy (in colours, shapes, etc). To conclude, I think all of us need to find which are our "basics"

Ironically enough I'm a Flamboyant Natural but despite having a strong vertical line (long slender arms, long slender neck, long face etc.), wide shoulders and a generally masculine energy I'm also curvier than the "standard" for FN because I have lipoedema. I'm top heavy too, but super tall with long skinny legs. The first outfit is my go-to - mock neck covers my aging neck and decolletage and minimizes the boob area AS LONG AS ITS BLACK or another dark color. The wide leg high waist pant makes me look less like the triangle I am 🤣 Amazing how the same outfit can work for a couple of wildly different bodies (mine & hers) but not work on others (yours). So many variations in our sizes and shapes, it's a shame that very few clothing retailers really take much of that into consideration. I'm glad there are more options today for petite, tall, and curvy ladies, but we really need some thought from clothing designers and manufacturers put into variations in body shape like straight, hourglass, triangle, pear, apple etc and have size options for that or lines of fashion known to cater to a specific shape... Something like that. Or more off the rack clothes made well enough with fabric sufficient for tailoring to be more commonly utilized and worth the cost. Tailoring usually doesn't help me because it's hard to make things longer, but it does help when I have to go larger to fit the wide shoulders and chest.

If you go with too harsh a lipstick, very drawn eyebrows and hair that is too 'perfect' or structured, it will make you look much older and more strict. If you go in with a softer shade of lipgloss, very lightly defined brows and a 'tousled soft curls' look, it will make you look more like the 'cool girl'.

The problem is the brand are lazy. It's easy to make an 18 year old 175cm 55kg girl look good in pretty much anything. Dressing the rest of us and making us look good? Trinny and Susannah managed some of the time, but brands aren't that talented 😂

Well guess what? I'm 180cms tall and slim, and clothes still don't fit. Sleeves and pants are too short, more structured garments are enormous on my chest (I'm a AA cup), and waists are normally too short on me as well. So I don't think anybody can look good in modern clothes off the rack, they need tailoring. That's one of the reasons why I learned how to sew. I agree with the last part of your comment, trying to look like someone else is never going to work. We need to find what's flattering on us and that will always be a million times better.

Great insights here! I see this a lot on all kind of style fronts (even with art and design!) The focus on "basics" and neutrals also means that folks aren't using their style to express their own personal aesthetic based on their individual interests and tastes! We need to let folks embrace creativity and step away from "basic".

It’s entirely dependent on Kibbe body shape. Square bold basics don’t look good on a soft curved fleshy frame. Everyone’s “basics” are different depending on the structure of their body. What looks intricate and fussy on one person will look basic on someone else. And what looks sophisticated on one will look frumpy on another. It has nothing to do with proportions, it’s about the structure of the bones. Two different hourglass shapes would look good in entirely different clothing depending on their bone structure.

THIS!! Kitchener's essences also play a huge role, I've found. Naturals tend to really shine in casual basic looks, but the same looks can look off or even sloppy on even the most beautiful of Romantics.

Great points about how an outfit is in the details. Yet, the first example are 2 different outfits, even if they have the same "black basics" theme. A v-neck t-shirt is not the same as a sleeveless mock neck, and the pants are different leg styles, which was pointed out. So, it's not a good comparison to the inspiration to begin with; as the "fixed" version actually follows the inspiration.

It's all about proportion. I'm 5'2" as well and have a bust. The wide leg pants, button down shirt and a blazer have been my work uniform for the last 20 years . The trick is that the top of the pants is always fitted and at the waist level, and the hem of the pants is just above the ankle, not longer , not shorter. The button down shirt is not fitted, it's relaxed or boxy, and cropped, I wear it untucked and it should not be longer than my hip bone. The blazer is also relaxed fit and not longer than my hip bone.

I'm 5' 4" and 1/2 so petite clothes don't fit me. They're a hair too short. Nonetheless, these principles still work well for anyone who is on the shorter side of "average." Thank you for the great information!
@witchlover932 ай бұрын
This video appeared in my recommended at a perfect time. Yesterday I was struggling to find something casual to wear. I didn’t need it to look great, just average. I finally decided to go with a black t-shirt and black shorts, thinking I couldn’t go wrong with something so basic, and I was disheartened when I realized I looked bad in it. It got me thinking that the reason I struggle with clothes is not that I have a bad sense of style, but that my body is just ugly. This video opened my eyes to the fact that even basic items are not necessarily effortless, and maybe I’m not the only one struggling just to look half decent. Bonus: I googled that outfit I was wearing to see what it looks like on other people, and it turns out I don’t love it on them either, so the problem did have more to do with styling and not so much with my body. Which is nice.

It's called a dress shirt. A button-down shirt refers to the shirts that have collars with buttons on them that are "buttoned down" onto the shirt front. They're often made of Oxford cloth and were very popular in the 80s and 90s. If you want to specify that a dress shirt is a shirt with buttons, call it a button UP shirt, unless it also has buttons on the collar.

I have a marked waist but short legs and that makes it very difficult for me when I want to find pants or skirts that don't shorten my height.

I'm 5'2" as well and the boyfriend blazer makes me look like I was playing dress up in my dad's closet lmao. In fact, as much as I love oversized stuff, for me it can't be TOO oversized or it just looks like I'm swimming in fabric. Plus, when we see clothes on models, they are usually at least 5’10 inches to 6 feet tall, the clothes are going to look a lot different on us real women, especially on us petites. The models are also no bigger than a size extra small to small, so they have very long, narrow proportions. I’m slender/normal weight, a Small to Medium size generally, but there’s no way the clothes will look the same on me. Even when I was 5’6” tall, in youth, I had this problem a lot, but because of aging and spine disease, I’m now less than 5’4” (age 64). Now that I buy almost exclusively online, it’s even more difficult. Plus, many styling tricks are used in fashion photos, including using clips, pins, tape, etc., in back to pull in excess fabric and special photography lighting and filters to make the colors look more appealing. Stores just don’t stock enough options to make it worth going in person. In my area, we only have two department stores and one in very-low price and the other one is very high price, but I like the mid-range, so there’s not much here for me.
@edennis85783 ай бұрын
I'm in the same boat, so I shop exclusively online. I need a petite size in most things, too, and no stores in my town carry petite sizes, even though it's a university town with students from all over the world. Lots of female students from China, Japan, and Malaysia where their average size is smaller than the smallest size that the stores in town carry.
