Ready to start growing your houseplant collection but unsure how to determine what type of light you get? There are four general types of lighting we receive indoors. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn the difference between bright light, medium light, low light, and full sun. Full sun environments are great for plants like Tropical Hibiscus, Citrus & Succulents. Bright, indirect light is great for many common flowering plants like Orchids and Anthurium as well as plants with brightly colored foliage. Plants like Chinese Evergreens and Stromanthe prefer medium light. Remember, the more variegation the foliage has the more light that particular plant needs. Some of our low light loving favorites include Neanthe Bella Palms, Calathea, ZZ Plants & Snake Plants.
Fun fact: 12-14 hours of florescent lighting is sufficient for houseplants requiring medium light.

I’ve seen so many videos on this and still never understood, but this is very informative. The only question I have is for the medium indirect light. Could that also be 6ft away from a south, east or west facing window if it has sheer curtains or is it strictly northern or artificial lighting? Thank you!

With medium indirect lighting, we suggest keeping plants 6-8 feet away from sunny windows, but if you have diffusing curtains that reduce the light, now the medium light plants can be placed closer to the window, depending on the shading that occurs. Within 5' is probably a good distance. If the foliage starts to fade, yellow, get brown edges, it's probably too much light, so move it back. Our "Perfect Places for Houseplants" garden guide is a good reference for light requirements too: www.petittigardencenter.com/perfect-placement-for-houseplants-in-winter/

What if I am in the northern hemisphere, have south-east facing windows, but my plants are off to the side and never directly in the sun? What type of light is that?
