Noelle, autumn is a great time of year to enjoy all the beautiful colors of mums, asters, sedum. coreopsis and the list goes on and on. Did not know about sweet autumn clematis vine so thanking you for telling about the vine and what a prolific bloomer it can be. Also, Black Hawks,Dallas Blues, Heavy Metal, Prairie Dropseed & Golden Sunset sound like beautiful ornamental grasses! Weigela thinking of purchasing as it is a colorful and easy shrub to grow. Thanking you so much for all the extensive information you share from Petitti Gardens. Happy Autumn & Much Joy!

One recommendation I have is cutting off a few branches when you get mums and trying to root the cuttings. I've been able to grow them in the window over winter and then plant them the following spring. I also had 50% success pulling my potted mums into the garage over the winter this past year. Technically both survived, but one died for some reason when spring came and they started growing again

Glad to see the natives getting some mention. I have two Panicum in the yard and they have been fantastic. I'm looking to add some "Sea Breeze" Panicum soon, I think, though I wouldn't be opposed to Sporobolus "Tara" since it grows a little bit smaller. Hard to find these plants around here, that's for sure.

Can you tell me the latest it would be okay to plant a tree? You have some good deals on flame thrower and carolina sweetheart redbuds but I wouldn't be able to plant until mid-October and I'm wondering if that will be okay. Thanks!

Fall is a great time to plant! You can plant at any time up until the ground freezes.

I would like some tips regarding potting mix for hybrid tea roses. I have 4 things. Cow compost, sand, soil, and coco-peat and I don't know the right ratio to amend the soil. My soil is clay holds lot of water for days and when dry it becomes hard as rock in which if i try dip finger it will fracture. Rain kills my plants or water. So far i have tried this ratio in pot 60% soil, 20% sand 25% cocopeat and 25% cow compost strangely roses still didn't survive.

If you are growing the roses in pots, you will want to use a very porous, well-draining potting mix with a small percentage (10%) of compost or coco-peat. If growing roses in the ground, dig the hole 2x as wide and same depth as the rose's root ball. Place the clay soil on the side of the hole and mix 50% of your existing clay soil, with 50% of your organic amendments, so you have equal parts clay and compost/peat that you will backfill the hole with. We don't bother with sand because it will just wash away and not help with drainage. We recommend adding Espoma Soil Perfector "clay buster" if you are having severe drainage issues. When planting, leave the top of the root ball about 1" above the natural soil level to help with drainage. Now is a great time to plant and amend soil as you go.

@@PetittiGardenCenters I made mix of 40% soil, 20 % cocopeat, 20% sand and 30 % cow compost. The soil doesn't compact and breaks easily like powder. Removed the soil of the plant and potted in new potted mix but rose leaves turned crispy and fell and then dieback begins if no leaves on stems.
