Petra - Beat The System (1984)

This song is one of my favorite Petra songs. I was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome and had to fight the special needs system my whole life growing up. Rather than listen to the world, my parents would pray and ask God what to do with me. I don’t think I would be here if my family didn’t teach me to lean on God going through the challenges I had to overcome. Now I’m traveling and watching high school kids come to Christ.

This is still one of my favorite Petra songs. I first heard it in 1986. In my country we had an organization called the Christian Television Association that ran ads on commercial television. One ad used snippets from this video. It was when I discovered that there was a genre of music called Christian Rock.

Brilliant. This clip for this fan is a god send. Beat The System was one of Petra's finest albums. It sits right next to Unseen Powers and Beyond Belief in my firm opinion. Awesome album. I rocked along to the entire album. What was unique about Petra was that the music cut to levels beyond just Christianity. It branched over into main society on so many levels. Petra had great messages without being an annoying Bible basher band. There simply a great Rock band period. Noted is the Roland G-707 synth guitar. How I wish I still had mine.

I LOVE the way "(1984)" is put alongside the title of this song... cuz though that may be because that's the year this song was released, it still PARALLELS so much many of the things the old classic BOOK named "1984" referred to!

After just introducing John Lawry to the band as well as having reached the highest point their career thus far, Greg decided to leave and go solo. Not the best decision for Greg but PETRA went on to become multi Grammy winners with John Schlitt.
