Milling strips for building a strip-built Petrel sea kayak. I'm making 3/16" thick cove and bead strips from western red cedar.
Plans for this kayak are available at guillemot-kayaks.com/catalog/... and guillemot-kayaks.myshopify.co...
Tools:
3/16" cove bit: amzn.to/2PPrXKU
3/16" bead bit: amzn.to/2YWQm5d

Happy to see you back in the shop. Could not have built my first cedar strip kayak without watching your videos. I hope you realize how helpful they are to the building community.

Mr. Nick, it’s truly a pleasure to watch your videos. As a child I built a boat with a wash tub and tractor inner tube. (Love the book by the way.) Now I just need to talk my wife out of the start-up cost of building a kayak. She’d rather a plastic one simply due to money. That and she doesn’t like extra attention, I’m sure a wooden kayak will bring even before we unload it from the vehicle. It’s hard to get away when people flock like sea gulls. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Nick. I can’t tell you how much help it is to be a fly on the wall of an experienced builder. Being able to peek over your shoulder as you build these boats gives a lot of insight into how to correctly build and how to manage the problems that are inevitable during a build. Very much appreciated.

Perfect timing. I have my bike set up in the basement on a trainer. I usually put a movie on and crank away. Today I started off with some kayak building. Made a quick 20 minuet warm up. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Thanks Nick.

I differ in the method you use, to B&C your strips. First as most builders, I don't have the shop space or the tools you have. I start with #3 and better planks. The planks vary in thickness by as much as an 1/8". I cut strips with a Skilsaw and fence. This produces strips that are uniform enough, I don't need to plane them. Then I B&C them by running them through the router, with the strips running Between the fence and the bit. This first pass uniforms all the strips, as long as the gap matches my thinnest plank. This eliminates a need for a planer. I've used this method successfully for years. My method produces great strips at a minimal cost Again as most builders, I don't have a planer or a power feed. I'd love a power feed though ! Thanks for sharing your videos ! I'm a big fan and appreciate your professionalism !

The only people who can click on "thumbs down" must have a lot of hate in their lives. Sad. Watching a craftsman share his knowledge can only be a good thing.

Fear not, good sir. I've been told that KZbin has a up/downvote "fuzz" algorithm. This is intended to stop bots from knowing exactly when their up/downvotes are applied, if at all. So those 2 downvotes (at the time of writing) may not be true to reality, and may just be KZbin "fuzzing" the numbers up from zero.

I just did a search for 5/32" radius bead and cove bits. The bead bit is available, it's the cove bit that's not easy to find. A good tool and Die guy could make a set. Maybe you could get some made and make available to us fellow Builders ???? Another great series of building videos ! Thanks Nick !

I received notice of E2, but when I went to view it I got a message that it was a private video. And now it seems to have disappeared...

I hit the wrong button by mistake, publishing E2 instead of E1. I quickly swapped it back, but I guess the notifications were faster than I was. E2 will be out next week. Sorry for getting your hopes up.

How do you choose between the planing method on the MicroBootlegger vs. cove and bead on this build? Is it based on the shape and curvature of the hull?
@NickSchade
@NickSchade 4 жыл бұрын
I used cove and bead on this one purely for the science of seeing how the 3/16" size worked. I normally would stick to hand planing the bevel, but I was interested to see how 3/16" compared to 1/4".

@@NickSchade Is there a discussion anywhere that addresses the pros and cons of bevel vs cove/bead. I have been back and forth with either cutting my own strips and planing the bevel, or making vs buying cove/bead pre-made strips from CLC.
@UberZogster
@UberZogster 4 жыл бұрын
@@generalinformation5284 I would highly recommend making your own cove and bead over buying from CLC. I was less than impressed with the cove and bead that came with a kit I just purchased. I would say the majority of strips had either the cove off center (the bottom running down a third in from one edge) or the bead side barely had the edges taken off which left 1/2-2/3rds of the strip thickness as a flat.

Thanks. I'm using a Shearwater Tandem kit from CLC and going to make it a hybrid with a strip deck. My first stip-built project. I have most of what I need to mill the lumber (I have to find a power feeder!) Still looking to hear from Nick if he knows of a discussion of the two methods - pros and cons.

@@generalinformation5284 I made the bead and cove strips for the Wee Lassie I built without a power feeder. Just a bit more work. I have also seen someone using the feed of the thickness planer to push strips through the router. But don't let me talk you out of getting a power feeder though!

Saludos Nick, I have cove an bead 1/4 "(amana) , I think for hull, and for deck use 3/16", in my proyec. The idea is no too thin all kayak. How is my first full scale kayak, prove 2 radius. Thank for your videos. Leopoldo

What glue do you use for your strip built kayaks? I'm just about to embark on a strip built project but need some recommendation on glue please!
@NickSchade
@NickSchade 4 жыл бұрын
I use standard yellow carpenters glue between the strips. It is very strong and easy to work with. Since the whole boat will be encapsulated with fiberglass and epoxy, it is OK that it is not waterproof.

@@NickSchade thanks Nick, I'll try some of that. I was wondering about using cascamite but hadn't realised that it sets with a chemical reaction with the water it's mixed with so won't work unless I mix a new batch for each strip! I've just bought some Titebond to try.
