Back in 2008 I was moving from Loveland CO to Visalia CA, I ended up staying the night in Gallup NM on the way (after experiencing a sunset in Albuquerque!). Got up EARLY in the morning and hit Petrified Forest at about 6:30am. I was the only person in the park and got to stroll around while listening to Pat Benatar's song "Painted Desert" on my ipod. It was a really cool experience!

I enjoy that your suggestions for what to do in Petrified Forest is "everything" XD Petrified Forest is an amazing park and I need to go back after having spent one day there in 2019. I'll add a suggestion to your itinerary though: outside the park there is a turnoff at the first bend on westbound US-180 which leads you down a gravel road. At the end of that road (something like 3 miles or so) there is DoBell Mineral and Excavations, where a family has been selling petrified wood at wholesale off their land for three generations. We spent hours with the owner, Noah, being toured around, identifying fossils for him (I'm a science teacher) and I picked up hundreds of dollars worth of petrified wood for $40... The only limit was my suitcase.

I and my family visited the Petrified Forest Park many years ago. The park does not want you to remove pieces of the petrified trees. And you shouldn’t. If you want pieces of this stuff. Go out a back entrance to the park and take a right. Go a couple of miles to another major intersection and look on your left. You want some of this stuff for whatever reason. Bring a dump truck. They have many tons of the material for sale.

Question: how long did it take you to drive through the park?
@TolstoyDotCom11 ай бұрын
IIRC, it's only about 20 miles and most people just drive through, stop at the overlooks, and maybe do nature trail. I biked part of old Route 66 back in March and posted about it to reddit/r/NationalPark. There are also longer backcountry hikes, ask a ranger. While the fewer people the better, I have to point out that the park - esp the Painted Desert part IMNSHO - is an overlooked gem.

Excellent. So is the petrified forest in the same place as the painted desert? The gov website wants to take me an hour north for the painted desert.

After 4:21 we see a lot of petrified trees neatly cut into logs , who cut them so neatly and how were they able to cut stones , clearly they used tools. Human history is more than what we know. Why only one comment other than me has asked the same question? Btw they have not been cut by primitive tools rather by very advanced tools . Why? Because it has been so easy for them to cut so many logs!!
@pistachiobutta Жыл бұрын

@@pistachiobutta I googled "How Did Those Petrified Logs Get 'Cut'?", it says: "After petrification, but while the logs were still encased in matrix rock, the logs cracked under stress. As the logs eroded out, from gravity and ice wedging, the cracks widened and segments separated. Silica naturally breaks on a clean angle.Sep 24, 2023"...ok , but who put them side by side 4:27 and why are they the same exact length logs 4:35 ? Do you mean another explanation , happy to give me a title of that article. thanks
