For longevity purposes i would go with the soft top instead... god knows how much it'll cost to repair something if malfunctions or wears out on the Retractable Fastback, it'll be even worse when the cars get 10+ years old. Whereas with the soft top all you have to do is replace it. Although if money isn't an issue then the RF is definitely the choice

@@Mysticfateee I am thinking of buying one of these and have had similar thoughts about the top. I have had a top vandalized on a car before the RF solves that issue and since miatas are tuned so much i'm sure there will be an after market solution. I will probably buy an RF this year.

Ive had my ND RF LTD since jan2017 from new, Ive owed every model from the NA on wards also currently own the NC RS( cant sell it as its part of the family) also have owned two Lotus Elise. putting my balls on the line here and opening up the great can of worms my current ND would out handle my two Lotus any day its a balanced pleasure to drive both in the towns and throwing her in to 40 k hairpin corners at 80k, its a drivers car, it has more than enough power to enjoy ( after all is there a lot of difference hitting a power pole at 240k or 150k?) its really not about power, its about using what you have under the bonnet and being able to put it on the road and as peter pointed out how often does any one get to a track ( very rarely )give me handling any day the ND is a point and shoot car, the best way to drive it is to sit and become a part of it.

Cracking little vid Peter. I have owned a Mk2 rag top from new ( only car I ever bought new) and I think a lot of people miss the point of them,, it's not an out & out sports car but a great little 'cruiser'. I had mine re mapped (as I do with most of my cars) but if you know how to drive and how to work an engine and gearbox, it's great FUN and puts a smile on your face for sure. My late wife and myself have toured Europe in it and had such a blast,,, can't wait for the summer to turn up so I can get the old girl out again,,

Petrol Ped, great review of this RF ND1 and I agree with all of your comments, except I am 6ft 2 and have no issues with driver legroom and comfort . Also, almost everyone, including yourself give the car a fab review and that is now further enhanced in 2019; same 2 Litre engine, but with forged (stronger and lighter) con rods and pistons and increased intake manifold size, which makes the engine quicker to rev and takes this engine up to 7,500 rpm, to achieve 187bhp. 0-60 now 6.4 secs or 5.7 secs for soft top. These are very respectable figures. The steering wheel is now also rake adjustable. Add these features to your 2017 car and this is now such an enjoyable, public road sports car . I have one, and the MX5 RF ND2 is a true hoot to drive. Furthermore insurance surprisingly cheap at my age.

Hi Mr Ped, I enjoyed your review. Like you I have not been a big fan of the MX5 but like the look of the latest model. You say you are too big but you did not say how tall you are? I am 6 foot 2 inches so I guess it would be too tight for me. I used to have a Lotus Elan M100 SE with a 1600 Isuzu engine that gave 165bhp and that did 0 to 60 in 6 seconds. the headroom was great in that. That was a 1990 car and I would like to think the New MX5 would have given a little more power (180BHP) to get it below 6 seconds. Nice review though. Guess I will have to save for a Boxster?

You can power up the Mazda MX5 ND to 200hp (without a turbo) and to 250hp (with a turbo) www.bbrgti.com/news/bbr-launches-stunning-mazda-mx-5-miata-nd-stage-1-turbo-upgrade/. This engine's output in terms of hp ain't that great, but the fuel consumption is very low under any conditions. Not a big fan of other characteristics such as the lack of space or the body roll on corners tho! After reading and watching many, many reviews on this car and actually testing a 1.5 softop at my local dealer, all I can say is that this car is more about handling than performance. However, it can beat a 200 hp Toyota GT 86 around a track...

I'm currently obsessing over this model and thinking it's my next (from a Golf TDI) but I live in montreal with the snow and omnipresent potholes. To your concerns, I think you will be able to swap a more powerful engine in later, (i.e. there's space under the bonnet), you could 'fix' the telescoping steering wheel issue with aftermarket spacers, and...you'll likely never get the leg-distance-fit thing resolved. :(. I drive a 98 BMW 2.8 as my daily driver, lots of Miatas try to keep up however they never seem to be able to in the straightaways and in the corners. The Mazda wouldn't break down constantly. BMW are having a shocker at the moment reliability wise with cars and especially bikes, just wouldn't risk it at the moment. . . For a quick well balanced car that isn't a potential money pit the Mazda is the choice. Got a 2019 Sports Nav MX5 and it's no slug with the added horsepower, engine wails at top end 7500 RPM. . Plenty really and still much cheaper with a Supercharger kit than a Z4..

I wonder, just HOW tall is this guy? I'm 6'2", and 210 lbs. I fit perfectly in my 206 Club. I take a 34 inseam in my pants, so my legs are fairly long.

No driver adjustment like normal seat height, etc., and no horsepower. Would rather have a used Z4 any day.
