I am so old that I remember them as new. What a hugely different world of cars it was then. Your report prompted lots of thoughts. Mostly two for just now. Quality and reliability were major issues with such a lot of cars. Japan transformed both, then Germany caught up. We never did really. The second was simplicity. Your demonstration MG game me a halcyon vision of how things might have been. A beautifully crafted and built car with its focus on driving pleasure. Engineering first and the rest second. It's nice to dream. Loved the review.

I too remember when they were new. I had one (two actually). Dad had a Healey 100-6. Lots more. (We were a racing family.) I still prefer a restored original, with an 1800 cc carbureted engine and old-school 4-speed tranny. LBC's were not built for speed, there's a much deeper purpose. Love mine.

Fantastic review, particularly of how things could have been. I’m a Porsche guy, but have always said the reason most of us drive sports cars is because of the British cars of the ‘60s. I still remember borrowing my friend’s Triumph TR-4 and driving it to the New Jersey shore via the back roads........it was just exhilarating! That actually led me to motorcycles and eventually Porsches as my daily drivers for the past 40+ years. Thanks for the wonderful memories that your video brought to mind.

I absolutely love your enthusiasm and big wide grin for the MGB Roadster - my old 1975 one in Green, I had as a 22 year old and bought for £850, was still on the road until 2006 (I’m 56 now) Now on a SORN, no doubt sitting in some barn somewhere, waiting for me to win the lottery and rescue it, and the youthful fun I had in it until I sold it to buy expedition gear to go representing England on Operation Raleigh in 1987. Great memories I’d love to realise again someday in LAO55P !

Don't get me wrong. I love English cars. They had character, heart personality and even soul. It was just reliability issues, build quality being threatened from advanced scalable robotics and mass production that eclipsed them. Management and labor issues further exacerbated this. I'm happy with the 95 HP in my 74 roadster. Don't need 300 HP for $100K.
@melindamanthey27575 жыл бұрын
Stock engine, the 1974 MGB was 79 HP. Unless you have diddled with a cam, ported head, increased compression,etc you have 79 HP.. My 1964 is stove stock and has the original 3 main engine in top condition ... 150 lbs compression straight across , properly tuned, still has its original 98 HP. Fast, fun, cheap. Agreed, increased HP is not a necessity. While the Abingdon is impressive, but defeats the purpose of the original B. Go buy a new MIATA. Better built than the Abingdon, at least the body panels fit, and considerably less money and a better exhaust note. Far more reasons to buy the MIATA if considering an Abingdon such as , modern SAFETY. I'll reserve comments on the boring, pretentious, contradictory video.
@jcx56595 жыл бұрын
@@melindamanthey2757 Sorry, the stock engine in a 74 is the 1800. Rated at 97 bhp. Exactly backward to what you wrote. There are tons of references to this fact. I do agree with you though on the premise about a Miata rather than the Abingdon design.
@matthewjenkins11615 жыл бұрын
@@melindamanthey2757 The stock engine in 3 and 5 main bearing is around 95BHP and only US spec cars were downtuned in the 70s. You've got 150 Newton Meters, not lbs which is 110. The car in the video is £100k including VAT, which is around $130k not $100k. If you utilising the power of a 300+bhp per tonne car and hit a lamp post, the air bags in an MX5 won't save you. Don't think you can compare the panel fit of an original MG, with what is turned out in this video. Most remaining cars by now, in UK at least, are likely built on Heritage body shells, not the mass produced, strike ridden BMC quality.
@matthewjenkins11615 жыл бұрын

I have a beautiful 1971 MGB, I can’t afford to swop the engine but watching your video has clinched the decision to upgrade to a Mazda gear box. I upgraded the brakes and added power steering in 2016. It’s due a bit of tlc, sort out some minor rust and respray in the near future. Love the idea of heated seats. I’m assuming that if you upgrade your classic MGB to one like you demonstrated you forfeit the exemption of road tax; but if you can afford £100,000 I guess you are not going to worry about paying Road fund tax. Recognised your run, one of my favourite local rides. I live in Abingdon and often take the long way round to visit my daughter in West Berkshire.

If you're strapped for cash, consider some POR 15 paint. They make a paint that bonds to rust, good for those places where appearance is less important, but preservation of metal is. If you are preserving the car and can't afford to do it like a concours restoration, be assured that the preservation of the car justifies doing what you can afford. The perfect can often be the enemy of the good. Leave the perfection to the next owner. At least he'll have something to work with. My best friend has done around 20 affordable restorations, with some corners cut, but the outcomes were solid both in body and in mechanical aspects, starting from barn finds and the like, classics that stood a good chance of getting crushed if he hadn't saved them.

Great car and beautiful work on it. Can really feel the joy you experienced and that is sometimes hard to put into words. You did it. inspiration to continue the work on my 1962 TR4 and 1972 TR6. Would love to see video on triumph cars if you have not already done so. Well done.

What a stunning car. Perhaps we can start to measure a car's greatness by the smiles it generates. If so, I think this is the best driving experience you've had all year. Now, how do I get £100k.....

I don’t really get why one wouldn’t just buy a new MX5 if one wants a modern roadster and keep the old B as it left the factory but with a complete refresh of engine, gearbox, suspension and brakes. I had a 1966 B for a number of years and the charm of it was in its old fashioned mechanical behaviour. How can you say that car you drove has a classic old car feel when it’s completely new. There’s nothing ‘old classic’ about it except for the shape.

Showed this to a friend who builds race engines for Singers and MGs recognised this as a Ken Costello conversion, he's building his own which could top 360bsp because it's lighter.

A good mgb is a joy to drive, a poor one is a shed, same with most old cars. It was a sports car for everyman, now it's a classic for everyman. What Frontline can do with the B and Midgets is amazing. However, you can get decent HP from the old gargly, raspy long stroke and the 3 litre 6 and 3.5 Rover V8 are excellent engines. So there are choices for fans of this gorgeous car. Great vid and car.

Loving that machine, even with this channel!!!!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 I've always loved the B. Tis a truly handsome yet unpretentious sports car. The original had around 95BHP, so this one is flamin' epic!! £85,000 ?? It's really not that expensive, compared to some of the "modern into classic" shops offer. If I sell my house now, I could go renting instead and have a few grand left after ordering one of these, plus my Astra Estate to live in!!!

95 HP with no ancillaries on a good day looking sideways at the dynamometer. probably 80 that was really enough then. My car with some work is north of 120BHP, plenty for today and drives fine in traffic. It is just 875kg kerb weight 0 fuel on a MkI car. £20K would see you in a very nice and lively car. Check ours out climbing Kop Hill on my Channel

I love the upcycling trend applied to classic cars. I like the retro dashboard on this example but I'm disappointed the oil pressure gauge has gone!

Was saving this video for Turkey day. Owned a V8 MGB GT in the UK with a swapped out Rover gear box. In the US I had a MGB roadster, 79 with rubber bumpers though. They have tons of character, even Porsche nut Seinfeld likes an MG roadster. This Frontline looks awesome, for here in AR, would need air con and a good canopy.......would be awesome on the Ozark roads. PS nothing wrong with Mazda engines. I think I would swap out the seats for something with lumbar support.

Companies from the 70-90s period who are now much smaller or failing could make absolute killing if they produced older models with the same design and new components. Mind you when Aston Martin and Jaguar did I this the cars were rather expensive! Great video Peter!

Fantastic review pete and a fantastic car ! I totally feel your joy for driving a pure driving machine, something lost in most modern cars. I have that same pleasure when I drive my 1961 cooper S replica. For the money, if you value everything you so well described, it is money well spent. I can,t recall you ever enthusing so much about other cars you have reviewed. Speaks volumes, Can see why there is a market for these modern twist classics and there are many....David brown Mini, Jaguar E type etc......

I get what you mean about the looks, I have a 1964 Old English White MGB Roadster, complete with wire wheels, red leather seats and a red roof, she gets so many admiring glances, but when I am in a brute of a car, something flashy, the looks I get are steeped in envy, but in the MGB, the looks are akin to that when you see a baby in a pram, you want one as a grandparent, you really REALLY want one, it brings out the caring side of you.

I owned an Allegro 1750 TC Equipe - OGB 477V - and it was an excellent, quick and very reliable car. Unfortunately it was written off in an accident and it went to the breakers in excellent condition apart from the accident damage and if it hadnt been for that I would still have had that car today as I was planning on keeping it for good. Not many of them left now either.

I own a Triumph TR4A and I have wire wheels. They are very easy to clean. I use a product called Super Clean in a spray bottle. Put a liberal amount all over the wheel rim. Wait a few minutes rub the wires with a soft brush then rinse it off with a hose or a power washer. Let dry and they look brand new.

Thanks for the review Pete... I always love your videos and your genuine, unpretentious enthusiasm. I do like the idea of driving classic cars with all of the stylish appeal that they evoke, but with modern mechanicals, reliability, handling and performance. HOWEVER... I nearly choked on my Classic British Cornflakes when you mentioned the price of this one! 🤢 I know that all such decisions are subjective, but I would NEVER pay £100k for that. Everything you loved about that car can be found in - for example - an excellent specimen TVR Griffith or Chimaera for ONE THIRD of that price, and imagine what you could buy with the change from £100k... That MG simply makes no sense at that price point... 🤷🏻♂️ Incidentally, did that MG actually have a soft top? If so, it’s a shame that you didn’t show it as, if it stows away invisibly behind the seats, then it’s a much neater arrangement than the original MGB hood, which was always a dreadful faff to raise and lower neatly. Lastly, I chuckle when I recall the poster and magazine adverts for the MGB Roadster back in the 70’s... There was always a lean, smug looking young man in flared trousers and driving gloves, with his fashionable girlfriend stood next to the car or sitting in the passenger seat, and the caption was something like, “0-50 MPH in 8.5 seconds... Her Mother wouldn’t like it.” Then the ugly, rubber nosed variant rolled off the production line, to comply with the stringent US road safety regulations, and everyone started adding graffiti to those ads, changing the wording to, “Neither she - nor her Mother - would be seen dead in it!” 😂
@PetrolPed5 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Yes the car has a soft top, we just removed it for the video. I know 100k is a lot but if you compare it with an Eagle E Type or Singer Porsche it suddenly looks like a bargain 😜
