I'm not sure how i feel about this. When it's a controlled environment & the dog is protected, and there is a clear way out, it's great. But... What happens when you've taught the dog to go underground, and he's NOT in a controlled environment, then they get into trouble & get trapped underground? A dog's curiosity, or hunting instinct, may be it's downfall, if you're just outside & the dog goes racing off after a burrowing animal/ Or go underground in a situation where the earth can come crashing in & bury them alive. There's MANY instances of people having to dig their dogs out, or of the dog dying underground, because no one could find him in time to save him. Jack Russel terriers in particular, are KNOWN for getting into these situations, and having to be rescued from underground, across the world. I'd think twice about teaching your dog to burrow underground, or in other dangerous activities, for it may mean you lose them to tragedy, when they're just outside romping around in the natural environment, which is where they spend most of their time, and dont realize the dangers of doing the same activities outside of the controlled environment. I feel the same way about Military & Police dogs jumping out airplanes. The dog does not realize the HUMAN has a parachute to control his descent. And even if the dog does have a parachute, it's the HUMAN who pulls the ripcord for the chute to open. The dog does not realize he doesnt have a built-in parachute on his back, and may jump to his death. And the same thing goes for a dog who does things in the lake or sea with a life vest. What happens when they jump in, without a vest, and have to swim until they're too exhausted to go on, and end up drowning? Teaching them to swim is a good idea anyway, just in case of emergency. But in the middle of the ocean, where there's no land in sight, and more water than they can ever swim... Well, you get the point. I do understand in the case of Military & Police dogs, that they are quite literally, expendable, But in the case of pets... Yeah. That's a different matter. I'm just sayin... It's something to think about & consider, before teaching your dogs dangerous activities.
