We are so fortunate that Tony Hatch brought the song to Pet Clark's attention. First record I bought and still my favorite singer. Quite a catalog of songs independent of her Hatch recordings. People Get Ready, Loving Arms, It's Midnight, Cry Like a Baby, Happy Heart......she's fantastic. I had read years ago about her involvement with discovering the Carpenters. Thanks for the video.

Mr. Firestone, thank you so much for sharing this immortal part of music history featuring two legends Petula Clark and Karen Carpenter. Not only were they magnificent performers, they were elegant, classy human beings. They remained humble and hardworking despite their richly deserved, stratospheric successes. Thankfully, lovely Petula is still with us while Karen is soaring among angels.

Is this the Roy Firestone who had the sports talk show? Well, what a beautiful tribute by Petula Clark for Karen.

Thank you for this. My two favorite female vocalists of all time. I've always said "Downtown" could be the perfect pop song - lyric, arrangement, and of course vocal - and now I know the back story. Ditto for the Petula Clark / Carpenters connection - fascinating. I am a new fan - will be back. Thanks again!

Excellent Roy! Glad I found your videos! I remember you from your sports show on TV many years ago. I had not heard this story of how Petula Clark got The Carpenters their big break. I just read the new Carpenters book, a musical legacy and I don`t remember reading that in there. I though Richard Carpenter gave Herb Albert a demo tape and that`s how they got signed. You learn something new everyday as they say! Look forward to your videos!

I mean no disrespect to Mr. Firestone but if anyone discovered the carpenters it would be wrecking crew bassist Joe Osborne. He recorded the tape that landed on herb Alpert‘s desk. I love Petula however she has stated that Elvis was trying to make a move on her and Karen Carpenter one evening. People who knew Elvis Will tell you that Elvis did not operate that way!! He just would not have done that. Hal Blaine, the most recorded drummer of all time , has stated he told Karen to sing in her now famous lower register voice . DID NOT HAPPEN PERIOD

You must be mistaken. The Carpenters were on stage for Goodbye Mr Chips, were already signed by Herb Alpert of A&M Records. Petula did not discover them!

The Carps didn't meet Petula until after they were signed. And the photo of Karen, Pet and Elvis was Photoshopped, which is widely known by many, including Richard.

I was a kid when DT came out. Yes a great hit it was. Reminded of images of strolling downtown NY on a bustling night. This was long before there were murders, carjackings and massive amounts of senseless crimes each night, unlike today. A whole different better time then.

Mr. Firestone please . Check your sources . And you left off Pet’s actual tribute to Karen .It really was very nice. But you won’t see and hear it here . All in all a rather pitiful piece of journalism
