Petunia the Possum eating grapes

We have a pet possum (for now) named Petunia. Here's a video of her sitting on my shoulder while I feed her grapes.

I love how possums eat with their mouths open, and really chew their food like they're enjoying the heck out of it! (I swear dogs just swallow stuff without even tasting it.)

A lot of that is just their biology. They are a very primitive mammal and they have a primitive jaw structure. They're like the prototype of mammals, but they're still around on the planet millions of years later.

The young opossums are really cute. The older ones unfortunately age rapidly and decline rapidly, and it seems like those are the ones that most people think of when they think of opossums. It seems like the ones I've had did all their aging in the last few months of their lives and they looked ancient and unhealthy in their last few weeks. But yeah, the babies are some of the cutest wild animals I've ever seen..

So sweet. We had one we raised from a tiny baby. Found typically on a dead mama roadkill. He was the coolest pet. Sweet as anything. People get the wrong idea about these critters.

Opossums are just like people. What we see in a "mean" possum is 99% fear, What they don't know they fear, So THAT is what the growling hissing and show of teeth is about. Just FEAR, When they have nothing to fear they are sweet kind affectionate little creatures that are as loyal and loving as a kitten. They can rip a chunk of flesh off you in a single snap of the jaw, and they know it. They have nothing to fear in the natural world. The books list the greatest natural predator of the Opossum as the pick up truck.

I had an opossum I named Sharon and she loved grapes, but after chewing and chewing would spit out the skin! I gave her a small bowl of grapes and she left every single skin in the bowl! Such a cutie!

make sure opossums get correct amount of calcium. Ive went through a place called Exotic Nutrition for years now... their Opossum food has work great while I also give extra veggies and fruit. Gotta get calcium or they get metabolic bone disease. And lots of love and attention and walks..... gotta get exercise

I always leave some cat food out at night for the possums. They are very humble little animals. Had a lot coming by last year, but only one of the young ones has returned this year so far. Most of them get killed on the road and by other wild life.
