The Peugeot 205 Rallye has always lived in the shadow of it's brother; the 205 GTi.
We were dertmined to find out whether this forgotten 80s icon deserved it's time in the spotlight, here in 2023!
The 80s/early 90s was a fantastic time for hot hatchbacks. With rivals such as the Mk2 VW Golf, & Mk2 Ford Fiesta XR2, the 205 had its work cut out.
With Peugeot wanting to enter into Group N1 rallying, they needed a sub 1300cc supermini to use as a homologation special; thus the 205 Rallye was born!
But, how does this 80s hatchback actually drive in 2023? We were very curious!
We get to drive a lot of cars through our fantastic Welsh mountain roads, so we really appreciate every car for its designated purpose. We felt mountain roads were an ideal location to push this 205 Rallye through it's paces!

The 205 Rallye is the only car I’ve ever bought brand new back in 1992 when I was 20, my mum saw it advertised in the papers for approximately £8500 brand new and we went to have a look a I bought it in yellow then I waited to get it on a K plate. I adored that car and did 80k in 3 1/2 years with it. It was never the quickest but it handled amazingly!!!! I really wish I still had it and I do know that it has been used as a rally car down in Nefyn, North Wales not far from Anglesey where I’m from. I’d love to find it and buy it back and restore it back to OEM. Beautiful little car which is the only car I’ve ever bought brand new

Girlfriend of the time had a 1.4 205 XS as a company car. I think that was a 1.4 with around 80hp. It was brilliant to drive. A number of years later a shared a well used 1.9 205 GTI with two friends for track days and enjoyed that too.

​@@accelerateyoutube nop lol, for an 18yo it was rubbish lol, you could only drive in high revs, or it would have " hiccups ", it iddled at 2500 RPM, and you need to be upwards of 3500 to start moving, and it was thirsty, that thing was really really thirsty 25l / 100km, but it sounded like an STI in iddle, it had blistering fast acceleration, and the best thing it also had straight cut gears, so it could take lots of abuse, and the whine.... Christ the way that gearbox whinned.... most fun car i ever drove in my life, and i drove a lot of cars.

I was driving a 1.9 liter tuned diesel. It was an amazing little car whit a huge amount of power for that time. The handling at narrow road was one of the absolute best for that price.

I agree with what drew said despite my age 😂 I went out in my mates I30N after driving the bugeye (I mean compared to that rallye it luxurious) and felt so disconnected from it and I was a passenger 😂😂

had two 1992 309's 1.4 75hp miss them very much now i drive an 1.5 115hp ek civic 1996 wich is a blast but miss them old french cars they were special and indeed very comfortable

It's kinda sad Peugeot only proposed a 75bhp version in the UK. My 1985 205GT (the 5-door version of the XS) had 80hp and although it didn't have the drivetrain and suspension settings of the Rallye it was a blast to drive on motorways (could easily sustain 100mph cruise speed, 290 miles Paris to Lyon in less than three hours) and quite decent on mountain roads, even with standard tires on snowy roads. You're right about the lightness of the steering : I had a 28cm diameter steering wheel on my 205 and the steering was still way lighter than in my previous Renault 5 Alpine Turbo (Gordini turbo in the UK) and its 36cm Iso Delta. BTW, the price of the 205XS is going up these days due to the fact the Rallye and GTI prices have become egregious.

I know! I inderstand if they didn't want the UK version being as good, but it seemed like they didn't even try! Hopefully one day I'll get to experience a Euro Rallye 🤞 Wow, sounds like you racked up some miles! They are so comfy! @@accelerateyoutube In terms of driving pleasure, there's a way to experience what the 205 can bring without paying a premium by getting a 309 that shares the same platform. I got a 309 GR (got it for around 1100€ with 90000km) from 1999 to 2008 and it was as fun to drive as the 205 GT with more space and a bigger torque due to the 1.6L engine (similar to the 205 GTI but with a carburetor). If you can deal with the design that is way less cool than the 205 it's a great little car.

I'm sorry to put a spanner in the works but the car in the video doesn't seem to be a genuine Peugeot 205 Rallye Uk car. The model year doesn't seem correct, the interior doesn't seem correct (GTI seats) the decals depict 1.3 where as UK versions were 1.4 . It seems this vehicle is a White Peugeot 205 XS with a decal set, Wheels & GTI interior. I could be wrong but the car doesn't seem right... still a great car anyway though!

I looked up on the dvla says its a 1992 with a 1340cc engine if that helps, not that i know much about these cars.

@@ATomRileyA the UK cars were 1360cc (thus 1.4...French versions were 1340cc/1.3) it's listed on the government website as 1360 which is correct but I've never seen one with GTI seats before & some of the decals aren't correct for a UK Rallye.

Did the UK rallye have the '1.4 / Rallye' decals on the C pillar plastic trims like the Euro ones?

They were blank from factory but there was 1.4 ones available from eBay with the same font

Uk spec is a wet blanket compared to euro model.a white xs is the better buy.i have a 1.9gti and hands down i wish i has my old xs back. Ps.message if anyone is looking a rallye front bumper.i have a spare one in garage.

Great video, I owned a yellow K reg 205 Rallye and also a quite one, I crashed them both 😂 would love another one, I paid £300 for the yellow one and £700 for the white one, great fun to drive and used to do 75mph I'm 2nd gear at 6000rpm ❤

We explain in the video that is an original 205 Rallye. A lot of people just think of the European spec Rallye, and forget about the UK spec Rallye (like the one featured in this video) - Drew

This post is false and misleading. If you check the registration on an insurance database you will see rallye special listed. It is uk spec rallye
