that part at 2:53 where you start on the ground and shift up to the pedals to get the motion down is exactly what i did to learn it. I'm surprised no one else tried it this way. It seemed like a logical approach to going from ground practice to pedal. Nice

I also managed to get the ankle motion down in 2022-2023, and I can relate to a lot of the things you mentioned. Definitely not use (or at least start with) a high spring tension, and being PATIENT with myself. I would also add a few technical things that worked for me: - Do not start at medium tempos and gradually build up speed. This is a different motion. I personally trained directly at 180 bpm (16th notes) - The motion itself feels more like "bouncing a basketball" rather than "pushing down your calf". I don't feel like my leg is going down, but more that my foot is "rotating". As in, the ball of my foot is always on the footboard, but NOT pushing consistently all the time during the motion. When the beater comes off, it feels like my foot is barely touching the footboard. - Even though this motion should not be using the shin muscles, I feel like you have to train them somewhat. They have to contribute a little bit, but they shouldn't do all the work. - Finally, I want to say that the seat position didn't matter that much. I am sitting almost with 90 degree angles with my legs. Let me know if you had similar experiences :)

Hi!My sensations are as if I'm kicking something with my foot, that is, I feel as if my leg is walking forward and back, while watching myself from the side in the mirror, my technique is absolutely correct.

Really good video! I have had my singles(180-200bpm) down with my both feet for so long, but trying to play them together is so unbelievable hard. It just starts to sound uneven so easily. Playing with both feet sequentially with same volume and following metronome..feels like this road is gonna take forever lol.

The part at 2:53 is the most crucial part and the best way to start getting familiar with the technique,i found also helpful to play in not convienient tempos e.g 200 bpm even if you manage to hit at least 2 hits with good technique after doing it for some time it will increase the speed on this technique.

Great video! And what about the beater and plate angle? Did you modify it or do you use the regular 45 degree for beater and regular angle for the plate? I also have the Speed Cobras as I told you in other video, so I will try lowering the tension since I was trying with high tension lately.
@SamiK1989

Hi! I started out with the basic 45 degree beater angle. I also never changed the position of the footboard. Try lowering the tension as you said. It definitely helps out in the beginning.

I would like to ask you how often do you practice? I'm having troubles at mid tempos like 120 bpm, some kind a twitch motion. What exercises would you suggested at mid tempos?
@SamiK1989
@SamiK1989 8 ай бұрын
Hi! I'm aiming to practice 3-4 times per week. I would not say 120bpm is "Midtempo". Try the flat-foot / full-leg motion at those tempos. It should be much easier since 120bpm tempo is not that fast, if you think about the actual midtempo bpm-range that is somewhere like 140-170bpm :)

Thank you for this video, Sami. A question about difference between twitching and correct anklemotion: It looks to me from this video that twitching results from only moving the front of the foot, almost like it's just the toes. Anklemotion, in contrast, seems to use the whole foot pivoting from the ankle. Is that right?
@pedrofrom1984
@pedrofrom1984 9 ай бұрын
I suspect I may have fallen prey to twitching, so I want to be able to identify those differences. Hence my question.

Hello again. I decided to go to this video a second time and ask. What muscles do you use when playing with ankle movements? Many people write that this technique greatly develops the calf muscles, but personally, the front muscles of my leg and the side muscles of my leg, those below the knee and above the ankle, burn.
@SamiK1989
@SamiK1989 9 ай бұрын
Hi Alex! Im basically only using the calfmuscles. It sounds like you are activating your shin muscle. I dont have ANY burnin sensation in the shinmuscles when I use the anklemotion. Really hard to give you more precise advice since I dont know how your technique looks like.

@TheAtheistRealist

I would say that ankle technique is no good for slower tempos like 140. At 140 just use your whole leg. Ankle technique starts for me at 170ish. At drum technique academy Iwas taught up start at my most comfortable tempo for the technique, 180 for me, then work my way down in tempo then up in tempo. When you play slower you move your foot down the pedal and when you play faster move your foot up to the front of the pedal. I know it’s different yo the way we practice drums in every other situation but for ankle technique you need to start at reasonably fast tempos.

Also this is right! But now start the problem: if a fellow likes to play classic metal, and don’t give a damm to cover tempos from 180 to 2800 bpm( nowadays there is a run to the fastest speed ) how to learn the magical mixed technique ankle/full leg To cover from 130 to 180? I mean, i look to play with the less fatigue i can with full leg i get 130, at 140 with full leg is a torture. Start to integrate ankle from 133 it looks in my opinion a good choice. But i want to learn to cover all the ramp of bpm from 130 to 180 instead jump to 180 to come back. Because those are the tempo i like to play, those are the tempos that makes “hard” a song. Not speed, very high bpm to me is just mess, not hard music. But i respect everybody taste.

Hello! Thank you. I watched your video and the springtension is VERY loose. Try to tighten it up a few turns at least. I think it’s loose springtension in the beginning but yours are a little bit too loose ( Then I dont know if your pedals are working correctly? 🙂)

How can u tell the difference between twitching and real ankle movement? I can do really fast and powerful single strokes but I don't feel them anywhere and takes me about 5 seconds to start it 😂
@SamiK1989
@SamiK1989 9 ай бұрын
"It takes me about 5 seconds to start it" that sounds almost exactly like the nervous twitching motion. I think once you gain control of the pedals only using your ankles you can start and stop whenever you want. You dont need several kickhits before the notes "line up" perfectly.
